You're very welcome, Diane! It's those little "odds and ends" of music that get incorporated into private lessons, but not really in online courses.

I've only today learned about appogiaturas, what they are, and how they very strongly release dopamine and endorphins, and that music is another way to release endorphins in addition to exercise - and the appogiatura releases it most strongly. They are found in pop and classical music - and I'm guessing all music. I know nothing about music - don't read it and don't play it, but I love it. A great example of an appogiature, i learned, is the song Yesterday by the beatles - Yes-ter-DAY - which gives us shivers, due to this strong release of dopamine & endorpins when the dissonant cord in "Yes-ter" resolves into the consonant cord in "DAY". Many of the Beatles songs use this technique. Then I thought, It seems to me when the word ap-po-gia-TU-RA itself is pronounced CORRECTLY in Italian, that the word, in and of itself, is a melodic appogiatura! It's a gorgeous word! This may explain why Italian is considered to be such a beautiful language - it's melodic - and gives me a strong emotional reaction because it's so beautiful - and if you think of it as musical, you soon realize it is because of it's melodic cadence AND it's loaded with appogiaturas! Not saying every italian word is an appogiatura, of course, but so many of them are.

I've always known them as 'grace notes' and given the pronunciations, I will continue to know them as grace notes. I always assumed they were both played quickly and the only difference was whether they came before the beat or on it. I wasn't aware that they had different values with regard to the tempo. I'll keep that in mind from now on.

There’s no crushing in the grind system of spacing notes, either you play as 32nd note grind or 16th notes. It’s a grace note. Either you fall on the count or before the count on ah of previous beat. Of course, it’s a music it’s upto you what kinda intention you played with either kinda legato or 16th note as grace note

Usually the rule of thumb is that the grace notes and appoggiaturas are played on the down beat if you're playing Mozart or composers before him. In my opinion depending on when a piece was composed you could probably get away with it in the early works of Beethoven but I know things are very subjective with him.

In my opinion, you should play it however you like. Music is a living art.
