Thanks for the great video. I have a question that when appositive phrase comes at the beginning we always offset it with comma? Or the rule of essential and non essential information applies here. Refer to 14:56 min of this video Is this sentence correct is case I have two young sister -My younger sister JYOTI is passionate about English.
@EnglishWithAshish2 жыл бұрын
We have to look at if the appositive is essential or nonessential. A nonessential appositive or any information is offset using commas. In the example, 'my younger sister ' is not specifying the person, and Jyoti (appositive) is a specific name. That's why we haven't used commas to offset it as it's essential.
@techyjohn33862 жыл бұрын
@@EnglishWithAshish @English With Ashish Thanks for replying!! Referring to the example given in video at 14:56 min, "My younger sister, JYOTI is passionate about English" here comma is used before Jyoti my only query is can I remove the comma in case I have two younger sister.

Sir, in 'we the people of this country want to get rid of corruption' the appositive phrase is mandatory but I feel like it wouldn't make sense without parenthesis. So when it comes to essential appositives do we not put commas even if it doesn't make sense. I am a regular commentator on your YT channel for my doubts but I do hope you are not getting annoyed with me. Please clarify.
@EnglishWithAshish4 жыл бұрын
Suresh, it's a straight NO to offset a phrase or a clause that is essential to the meaning of a noun or something else. The whole point of using commas is to show that the part can be eliminate from the sentence without altering the original meaning. I love your comments. Feel free to comment! :)

All connections, wherever necessary, will be removed. Sir, what is (wherever necessary) in it? Is it a appositive phrase
@EnglishWithAshish4 жыл бұрын
That's not an appositive phrase, my friend. An appositive or appositive phrase renames a noun that comes before it. In your sentence, "whenever necessary" does give information about the subject but doesn't rename it. I'd rather call it an absolute phrase.

Why can't we call appositive as Adjective or adjective phases? Cause it's modifying The subject (noun/pronoun)
@EnglishWithAshish2 жыл бұрын
It is. This name is given because of it sitting next to the subject (the noun). In grammar, we give names to topics based on different things, not always related to its functionality. A Participle phrase is a good example. Why do we just not call them adjective phrases or adverb phrases instead? Because of it starting with a certain word: participle.

You said if you know Alex you're in a no need for the extra info if you don't know which Alex I am talking about the extra info(his head teacher of the school) won't help you to know him. Let's say that I know two people who are named Alex, and you talk to me about one of them, I say ' I don't know which Alex you mean, you say ' your head teacher of the school', after knowing this info I can tell which Alex you mean.
