This is an absolute phrase, not a present participle phrase. The present participle is working as an adjective, modifying the noun bell.

Hi guy! I am curious about one of your examples of nonessential present pp. phrase. To me, the present pp. phrase of the sentence “We hid behind a wall, watching the boys rob a shop.” seems to be reduced adverb clause with conjunction “while or when” modifying the independence clause. What do you think?

Very useful lesson. I know the " defining / non defining ADJECTIVE CLAUSE ". I'm wondering if an ADVERBIAL PHRASE / PRESENT PARTICIPLE PHRASE could be called DEFINING / NON DEFINING (ADVERBIAL or PRESENT PARTICIPLE ) "PHRASE" instead of "CLAUSE". Is that what you meant in this video ?
@EnglishWithAshish3 жыл бұрын
The information that we refer to essential or nonessential is basically is a modifier (adjective). Adverb phrases or clauses are useful but they can't be termed as essential or nonessential. And yes, those are phrases, not clauses.

Why can't we say gerund phrase here is verb + ing Please rply me..

Sir could please these these two sentences 1 At night i fell asleep hearing the grunting of the hippos . 2 i have also added a few comments describing my own experiences.. In the first examples why hearing word is used with ing ? And last one why the describing is used with ing ? Is it present participe ? comments which describe ?
@hadivazifehdan55962 жыл бұрын
Hi dude. This might be late but these are the answers: So the first sentence contains a present participle phrase, which is actually a reduced adverb clauses. It's giving us the reason why you fell asleep at that night, or it can also mean that while you were hearing the grunting of the hippos, you fell asleep. So in the first meaning, your sleep is caused by those animals, but in the second one, it's just telling us that two actions happen at the same time. If you wish to make it have just one meaning, use while to be more specific, that way it only means two actions happened at the same time ( in this case ). Keep that in mind that while can also show contrast in some cases. For your second sentence, it's a reduced adjective clause.
