None of my coworkers, nor myself, wear tool belts. Some of us wear small pouches with a few of the common tools for the task at hand, but never full-on belts. Maybe it’s just the nature of what we do, but it would feel completely pointless to carry 40 pounds worth of tools when I am only using 5 of them. To me, walking 10 feet over to my bag when I need a tool every once in a while is worth avoiding years of back issues.

Hey Tyler, thanks for sharing that prospective. I agree with you for sure regarding having 40 pounds of nonsense on you at all times. I’ve worked with guys like that who’s tool belt weighs 40 pounds because they have every possible tool they could ever need on them. My system I do is I have a veto pro pac xl bag that keeps all of my tools in, and then my tool belt is always empty to begin the day and when the day ends. I only carry what tools I need for the task at hand in my belt, which as you say most of the time is only like 5 tools.

@@OpportunityElectrical That makes a lot of sense! Thanks for sharing. In my company, not one person wears big construction tool belt pouches. Either they use a small clip-on pouch or they work entirely out of their bag.

Interesting to see how it is in America in regards to buying tools for the job, In the EU the employer must provide all hand tools and power tools from the first day of working. So if you walk in empty handed on the first day it's not your fault and you wouldn't be looked down upon for that.

For union work in America, it is a lot more common for the employer to provide tools. For non-union work (at least in my region) it is common for employers to provide a "tool allowance" which is typically paid out once and is around $300 and is assumed that it will be used on power tools. Employers typically say, "must own your own hand tools." This can provide a bigger barrier to entry no doubt compared to if they were already provided by the employer. I suppose the only advantage would be since YOU own your own tools, it makes it easier to jump around to different shops, as well as start your own business since you already own your own tools. I love hearing international perspectives (especially regarding the trades) so I appreciate you stopping by a dropping your comment!

@@OpportunityElectrical Yeah that's true about jumping around. I actually started buying my own partly because of that and also because employers don't usually buy quality tools so it's not very enjoyable to work with them.

@@OpportunityElectrical Australia, a set of 10in cobras are 80 bucks here in a brick and mortar store. I buy all my tools online for that reason import direct from germany. Cordless gear is crazy expensive here too - current gen milwaukee impact driver wont get much change from 400 bucks skin only

Translation: if you want to have to change companies to find people who will respect you then show up to work expecting to borrow tools.

No needle nose?

They will defiantly need a needle nose, but I cut that one out for simplicity of keeping it down to "15." At our local trade school, the tool list for the college also doesn't include a needle nose, but I ended up buying one for myself within the first year of working.
HOW MUCH money have I spent on tools?
