Material management, renting equipment, learning how to tie and rig up equipment to pick it off semi trucks with telehandlers. So from being an apprentice to journeyman overnight. How do you do it? All of a sudden you're responsible for many things.

I'm about to sign up for my apprenticeship, I'll be with your usual small company, working on residential and commercial stuff. I can't wait to dedicate myself to this craft. Here in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, our journeyman to apprentice ratio was changed from 3 journey men to 1 apprentice to a more traditional 1:1 ratio 2018-2019. Interesting to see how regulations differ, and how it effects the the climate of the industry.

Also, it’s pretty cool that I found this video. I really want to become an apprentice. I’ve applied for over 5-6 jobs and haven’t gotten any interviews. Is it best to know someone to get you in? I currently do not have any experience. Not sure if that’s the reason 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@FloridaElectric When I was hired as an apprentice, I was half way done with my first year of trade school so I kind of used that to get my foot in the door. I suppose it is always good to know someone. Do you have any construction experience? Have you contacted your local union hall? I also wouldn't be afraid of doing follow ups with the jobs you've applied for and trying to see what they wouldn't bring you in for an interview. Best luck man!

Any advice on becoming an electrician for the older crowd? Im 29 and changing careers after nine years of working in an unrelated field. I'm happy to start at the bottom but curious as to how you would approach this with your experience, Thank you.

@matt59fire I agree I'm not old. Just seems old to be an apprentice but I suppose all apprentices aren't right out of school.

My old boss got into the trade when he was 39 after no construction his whole life, he liked it but he was in good physical health to do the job. He was a good guy and he made decent money. This is Texas and by 6-7 years in he made 80ishK a year

Watch some ELECTRICIANU videos, the day in the life type stuff is what your career will mostly look like. I was interested in being one for years before I got a job as one and didn’t know where to start but honestly you just need to be good at following directions when u first start, it’s going to be confusing but just ask questions as you go but electricianu videos help understand a bit. It’s not really worth studying electricity before u even get like 2ish years in the trade so don’t let that stop u from getting into it

I was told you dont have to be a journeyman to become a electrical contractor. Is that true?

You don’t have to have the license to run the business but in order to legally perform electrical work, it has to be under the employ of a master electrician that works for the company. In other words most of these companies or by master electricians starting their own company or like someone with money that knows how to run general construction businesses that pays a master electrician to use their license

What do you called a female journeyman? Journey woman?
@OpportunityElectrical
@OpportunityElectrical Жыл бұрын
That's a good question. From my experience of the women I have known in the trade, I have never heard a woman have a problem with "journeyman" after I have asked them if they have a preference so I know what to say. In my border state of Minnesota, they call licensed electricians "Journeyworker" now to be inclusive. I have also heard "Foreperson" instead of Foreman and "journey person" instead of journeyman. I have heard two different women tell me that they prefer "journeyman" over "journeyworker" because they said they want to have the same title as the men since they passed the same test and qualifications as they did. I personally think it is probably best to go about it by an individual basis and call female licensed electricians whatever they would prefer to be called. I always ask, but I have yet to hear a woman say she prefers "journeyworker" instead, but if I had a woman prefer that, I would certainly use "journeyworker" or "Journeywoman" instead.
