Chania International Airport, Κρατικός Αερολιμένας "Ιωάννης Δασκαλογιάννης"), "Daskalogiannis" (CHQ LGSA) is an international airport located near Souda Bay on the Akrotiri Peninsula of the Greek island of Crete, serving the city of Chania, 14 kilometres away.
Moreover, it is a gateway to western Crete for an increasing amount of tourists. The airport is named after Daskalogiannis, a Cretan rebel against Ottoman rule in the 18th century and is a joint civil-military airport.
It is the fifth busiest airport in Greece and 8th in Balkan peninsula in terms of passengers. From 2010 to 2016 has a great increase about 100% in passengers arrivals. The airport is connected with many countries (about 30) from Europe and Asia especially in summer season and with flights connections in Greece and Cyprus whole year.
In this film you will see the last part of an approach towards Chania International Airport runway 29.

Why is the 2nd runway never in use? On Wikipedia it also says the airport has only 1 runway…

2nd runway is used only as taxiway. It is an old military airfield (and still used for military flights). There are still some airports with the same setup. With time they will change it (thats what I expect).

A general Q, recently I was on the inbound flight from CHQ seating in a back row behind the wings and the cabin noise level was enormous, I could barely hear the announcements. Does it make any difference where you're seating? Do you experience the same noise level in the cockpit as in the cabin? PS. Been flying with T for years, always top-notch pilots, same like in the video :)

First of all... Thanks for the compliment to all of my colleagues! Noise in the cockpit has always been an issue. I can't tell you if the noise level in the back is worse than in the front. I know that before landing you hear the engines a lot more! So I think there is more noise in the back of the aircraft. Any way... at the moment we use the Bose A20 aviation headsets. They make a huge difference! Less noise means better concentration, less fatigue etc... Thanks for your comment and question. Greetings, Michaël

Thanks for the quick reply, I must say I experience much less noise on descent-I guess due to less revs, true though before landing when on manual the pilot keeps adjusting the engines thrust to maintain the glide path because of wind direction, flaps and landing gear. I don't know if the noise levels differ a lot between Boeing, Airbus and the others. I guess extra sound insulation would probably mean extra weight, thus extra fuel and costs. "The noise during a typical plane journey can vary significantly. Take-off and landing are the loudest moments, when noise levels inside the cabin can reach 105 decibels (dB). At cruising altitudes, noise drops to around 85 dB, says Pamela Mason of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)." That's a lot of dB's to be exposed to if you're a pax or cabin crew, attending a rock concert is about 120 dB. I landed at this airport 3 days ago, I was told I wasn't allowed to film the landing because I would get arrested, it's a nice airport, but the runway I'm sure you're aware of is fairly bumpy.

I did record a landing on a Norwegian flight but didn´t get arrested or even told about that.

It is actually not clear at the moment... About 10 years ago it was not allowed... most of Greek airports are military. This airport is still active as a military base... but you don't see much in this film about that. So I think it is OK.

mightymkl I’ve been on the military side of the airport, in the f16s thousands of times and talked with the pilots + took pictures without any issues. They even let you sit inside the airplane if you ask

The approach to this airport is a non-precision approach. In our aircraft we have IAN. This gives the presentation on the PFD of an ILS approach while it is a non-precision. When the given QNH and temperature differ to much. You will receive a GlideSlope warning while you are descending visually with the PAPI. So we brief this during our approach briefing. "We might receive a GlideSlope warning". This warning was generated way below our minimums... so we should have been visual any way. If we would have received this warning prior the minimums and where not visual with the runway... a go around would have been initiated. I hope it does make sense now. :-)

Did you ever fly to Skiathos that has a 1600 meter runway, or do pilots need a special training for that particular runway?

When did you disengage the AFDS and A/T on this approach?

The autopilot was disconnected before we started this film. I think around 6 nm before touchdown.

Why did the GPWS call the Glide slope? You looked on profile.

We where on profile. We continued visual on the papi. For the calculated path from the FMC we where just below GP. This is why it gave the call and why we pushed it away and continued the approach. (If we would not have been visual, a Go Around would have been initiated).

The other one was locked by maintenance.
