I was always taught that slice is the best for approach shots because (if it's hit correctly and doesn't float and sit up after bouncing) it forces them to hit up on it, which is easier to volley. But it seems like the trend now is to hit hard and deep topspin for approach if possible? It's nice to learn something new!

Both are appropriate ways to approach. I prefer to use slice on low approach shots, especially on my backhand side. However if the ball is higher and on my forehand side, I like to attack with pace and topspin.

So this is why I have been getting passed! Because I hit my approach shots crosscourt and my opponent hits down the line and humiliates me. I guess you should hit it DTL because it is much harder to pull off a crosscourt passing shot than a DTL passing shot

Yes hitting down the line leaves much less of a target for your opponent. If you decide to go crosscourt on your approach just make sure you hit it aggressively.
