Thank you for this great video, however, Maslow himself never actually developed the pyramid and rigid hierarchy that is associated with it. As they were still in their infancy his theories began to be applied to a wide variety of different fields, becoming overgeneralized and simplified in the process (Koltko-Rivera, 2006). Bridgman et al. (2019) effectively explain how this misunderstanding emerged in the field of business. Douglas McGregor integrated Maslow’s early theories into his work and, during this somewhat muddled process, promoted the idea that lower-order needs must be met before higher-order needs can be pursued. This concept is a frequent critique of Maslow's theories. However, Maslow himself was clear that humans are "partially satisfied in all their basic needs and partially unsatisfied in all their basic needs at the same time" (Maslow, 1943, p.14). He explicitly stated that one need does not have to be fully met before others can be pursued, which contradicts the common belief. Bridgman et al. then go on to explain how the classic pyramid was developed and propagated as well. While Maslow’s theory may in fact have legitimate limitations and empirical support, I just felt it was important to make sure any discussion of his theories truly represents what he himself proposed rather than the common misconceptions. References Bridgman, T., Cummings, S., & Ballard, J. (2019). Who built Maslow’s pyramid? Great input and thanks for the comment! This video was specifically designed for the AQA A Level Psychology course and the level of detail you have gone into, while correct, is not needed for this specific course.

@@REDPsychology Thank you for the reply. I don't mean to undermine your work, it's just as a psychology teacher and academic I feel the need to try to correct popular myths about psychology that continue to be propogated, even by educational institutions. The heirarchy of needs is still a basic theory taught to teachers as fact, and yet it's not at all what was proposed by Maslow or even supported by evidence. It's frustrating when we have much better evidence-based theories that should be used to empower teachers to help their students.

@@irenef7181 thanks. I would agree. Unfortunately the secondary education courses in the UK struggle to keep up to date with contemporary thinking. I think part of this is to present sequential learning - starting with a more structured presentation for 14 year olds then getting more complex with further study. There is a curse of knowledge and the more you know the more you realise you don’t know. I can see the hierarchy of needs being a helpful introduction but as always there are more complex ways to explore theories. This is presented as required from the specification. There is a consultation on the specification which can be contributed to via the British Psychological Society or Association for the Teaching of Psychology.
