Approaching the Scene 143: Nikon Z Action AF Tracking Guide & My New Settings

(LINKS BELOW) This video is a part Nikon Z camera AF tracking tutorial and part update to my Nikon Z camera set up tutorial videos. I've been shooting a ton of action, motion and wildlife with my Z6ii and Z7ii (as well as the Z6/Z7) and I've been tweaking my control settings a bit to make changing AF mode and AF area as well as bracketing and subject tracking simpler. In this video, I'll explain my thoughts, show you what I'm talking about in camera and then walk you through updating your settings from my most recent setup video.

Another excellent video. I must be doing something right as I’ve had my Fn1 button set auto focus mode since I got the Z6ii. I’ll try using the back button as the tracking activation rather than the Fn2 button. I find the wide auto area goo for birds in flight. Keep those videos coming you’re doing a great job!

Great job Hudson of explaining the how and why you're using the custom settings! Retired now finally as of last week so I have time to actually play around with these things now on my Z6ii lol... Got a new video up on a repair to my Darche 180 awning on my trailer...most of it shot with my GoPro but I snuck in some B-roll close-ups of my Budnitz bicycle shot with my Z6ii :). Really love my Z70-200s ur swinging around there...so versatile...I shot some pretty cool macro-like slow-mo of some power tool work in the garage that made it easy to keep the camera/lens at a safe distance :)

I wanted the faster autofocus, it’s not a lot but camera is just snappier for action. Plus more focus modes are available.

@@fredericchopin1667 The Z6 is great, but I also moved to the Z6II and I love it. It's more responsive for action and the eye tracking is noticeably improved, with additional AF modes. Auto Area AF is more reliable ("smarter") as well. I wanted dual card slots and a grip in the future too. BUT - it all depends on your use-case, what & how you shoot. I think the original Z6 is a bargain now, even buying new.

I think the 1.2 firmware update (end of April) fixes the lagging AF tracking box issue. How are you getting NEFs from Z6II into Lightroom? Mine won't recognize them.

A Lightroom update several months ago added support for the z6ii and z7ii. Look in the creative cloud app for pending updates. That'll do it. Yes, funny thing is that the AF worked much better than the box before. Now the box keeps up and AF acquisition and lock is a touch better, particularly with faces and eyes.

Thanks Hudson. Mapping the fn1 and fn2 buttons as described is my preference also to reach with the middle (fn1) and ring finger (fn2) for action and wildlife. Is there a ‘dead’ pixel on your sensor?

Thanks for the video very helpful. Can you swap the back and front dial for changing your focus setting’s. It’s easier to move the back dial than the front when holding the fn1 button and I really just change the focus options and never change out of af-c

I do this with the Fn 1 and 2 but swapped. I use Fn 2 for the focus modes. I find i am quicker and smoother hitting Fn 1 button to pop up the tracking box when needed.

Great stuff! Off topic question. What eye cup is that on your Z? I just got a Z6ii and I wear glasses so I think something like that might help me get a better framing in the EVF.

I do this a little differently. In the Z6/Z7 II versions, the default for AF Mode/AF Area is the bottom front button. I leave it there, and map Subject Tracking to the top front button. I do that because I find the top front button easier to access while keeping my finger on the shutter and my thumb ready to hit the joystick to move the box. The hand tilts up for this, while the hand tilts down a bit to hit the AF Mode/AF Area button and access the control dials. Subtle, but I think more efficient. I also swap the control dial function for this, putting AF Mode on the front control dial. Normally, I would use the front control dial for functions that I change more often or need to change quickly. But I use the AF Mode to switch between MF and AF modes, and it is much quicker to use the front control dial for me. Also, I have "Release Button to use Dial" set to ON, so I don't have to keep the button pressed while scrolling through the settings. For example, I swap dial function for exposure (I also have "Easy Exposure Compensation" set to ON) because I adjust EC more often in A mode, but Shutter more often in S and M mode.

You get two more buttons with the 2.8 zoom$, but I couldn't afford/justify them. I think all of the S lenses AND the FTZ should have two buttons on them. I am not a fan of the extra function ring because I'd move it by mistake most of the time. Since the joystick and dial are redundant, Nikon should let us remap the dial-pad buttons like Sony does. Not to mention letting us program ANY setting to a customizable button. I tried a D780 and only had to remap two buttons. ;)

Cool idea - personally, I like to use my F1 as a preview button to review the photo I just took - this is an easy way to review shots in the EVF when you are shooting outside in the bright sun without having to take your eye from the viewfinder to get at the play button - very helpful in outdoor portraiture - your subject does not even know you are reviewing the shot, which is great as 'chimping' your shots in front of a subject breaks the mood of the shoot and can cause a lack of confidence from the subject. My F2 button is also set to subject tracking - as such I like to use the record button to change my AF, but I agree that it is awkward to switch the modes with middle finger on the front command dial. Therefore, for those that do not want to map the AF to the F1 or F2 because they have other preferred uses for these buttons, and therefore want to use the record button for AF, but also do not like the awkwardness of switching the modes with middle finger on the front command dial, you can switch the mode selection to the back command dial and utilize your thumb which is much easier and quicker - when you do this, then the front command dial becomes the selector for changing from AF-S to AF-C to M, but this is a selection that you change much less frequently and normally you don't need to change this selection as quickly, so that 'awkward' use of the middle finger comes up way less and in less critical situations where you have time to deal with the 'awkwardness', and the important selection of changing modes is accomplished easily and quickly - just an alternative to what is being suggested here for those that want to use their F1 and F2 buttons for other things. For those that are interested in doing this - here is how to change this in the menu: go to the 'Custom Settings Menu' (the Pencil) then to f (Controls) then to f5 (Customize command dials) then 'Change main/sub' then 'Autofocus setting' (switch to 'On'). Again this is just an alternative for those that need the F1 and F2 for other things. Good video!

Is it possible to take three bracketed photos automatically with one shutter button press? If so where in the menu do you set that up or how does it work?

I use the "record" button to allow choice of either Area Mode or Focus modes AF-S etc using the command dials however I have my camera bodies (Z6ii included) set using custom setting f6 which means all I have to do is press and release the "record" button. this then allows either command dial to be rolled to alter a setting. to exit this I either press and release the "record" button again or any other button, ie AF-ON which gets you back into focus control. I have been using this setup of some time and was happy to see that the Z6 allows this option also. I have one front Function button set for the tracking option as you illustrate and the other to Spot Metering which can be handy if for example a bird in the sky with a bright background.

To zoom into the foreground and background at your chosen final aperture and check critical focus in the landscape. Totally possible on the D850, d500, d810, d800, but not the Z's. Makes zero sense. It's like putting a loupe to the ground glass of a 8x10 camera under the hood stopped down. Cheating. I miss it.

Hudson - great video. I have been experimenting a lot with the Z72's autofocus and this is really helpful. One note - I rarely use DOF preview since for landscape shooting as I typically use focus peaking and in wildlife photography who has time to check DOF. But I find setting the movie play button so I can quickly change metering modes much more useful -- for what's its worth.

Dear Hudson, which AF mode do you use when shooting flying birds in woody environment, meaning difficult contrasty backgrounds? What can I do on my Z6II to quicker grab focus with BIF that suddenly appear? (pre-focussing is only helpful when I can estimate where the bird may appear)

For me if the birds are popping up close and relatively frame filling, I just get them in the frame in auto area AF-C, tap the AF-On button and let the camera catch them no matter the background, if you are moving the frame with them it will pick them up. If they are further out, then use the subject tracking box. leave it in the middle, frame them on it and hold AF-On down. That's been my technique and it's worked really well for me with the latest firmware. I'm about to do a new video about that tomorrow. I honestly let the Z cameras choose the AF-C area point (auto area) unless it can't, then I activate subject tracking. I've been getting great results the more I practice.

With both I have 70-80% keeper rate, with Z6II approx. 30%. I would really appreciate if Nikon would give us more individual AF modes + focus on the fn buttons.

I find mapping the lens buttons (70-200 FL ED, 500 PF, etc) to activate/deactivate the subject tracking box works well for me. All the buttons on those F-mount lenses register as the L-Fn button on the Z camera. I know that's your Play button, HH. :) Non-Z lenses have to have the switch on the lens set to AF-L for that to work. AF-C, Auto Area, Auto ISO, 1/640, as big an aperture as I can get. That's my settings 95% of the time for sports, maybe adjusting shutter/aperture if it's REALLY bright. Probably more like 1/1000 for race cars, unless I'm trying to pan with 1/30 and f/11 or so...

Z6ii for sure. Z7ii isn't as good at high ISO. Great for landscapes, but the 6ii is my pick for action every time. Plus the glass they are making for the new mount is just incredible. I can't wait for that 100-400 on the roadmap. No one is doing better with lenses than Nikon right now. It's crazy.

Now that the 70-200 f/2.8 S is available (with stellar reviews) would you recommend I get that lens and 2.0x teleconverter (for 140-400mm reach) or wait for the 100-400 mm S lens to arrive ? The default OK to activate and zoom out to deactivate combo is not a great way to operate. Putting it on a function button lets a free finger activate and deactivate with a simple press of the same button.

Z curious! LOL I'm shooting Sony for a bit; while waiting for a Z with a few more buttons and dials or a major firmware update. My plan is to pick up a used Z7II when the Z9 comes out! ;) Wide(L) with eye focus was my favorite. That should (in theory) take LESS processing power than full area on a Z#. I sure hope they release that to those other bodies. Great tips, I found AF-C Dynamic was the best option for when you're switching between moving and still objects. You'll notice the focusing isn't as jumpy, nervous, or noisy as the other continuous modes.

Hudson... I would recommend that you switch front dial to switch to Fucus Mode and rear command dial to change the AF mode. The reason I teach this is that the Focus Mode is not changed much - in fact never actually any need at all when back button focusing as you never really need to come out of AF-C when practicing BBF techniques. The reason I suggest switching the dials around is that it is easier to use your thumb to turn the rear command dial and keep your 'shutter-finger' (index) on the shutter ready for action. The other way around means that you have to take your shutter-finger off the shutter briefly to change AF mode which is never a good thing! BTW - if you have an S lens then set one of the Lens function buttons (L-FN) to set AF Tracking mode and then a second time (as you mention) to go back to the AF mode you are using. It is a brilliant method and works very very well indeed. All we need now is for Nikon to allow the Wide-area AF (S) and Wide-area AF (L) to automatically move to the right or the left of composition depending on which way the camera is being panned with, at all times, utilising Face and Eye detection. Happy days indeed! 🙂🙂🙂 Then sooner or later we will not need to use the joystick to do this! Alternatively, or perhaps additionally, Nikon should merge Wide-area AF (S) and Wide-area AF (L) with Auto Tracking with Face and Eye detact and BOOMSHAKAALAA... pigs' paradise of a system for sure. How do you switch the dials, so AF mode is on back dial? I have it set like Hudson suggests but I constantly find myself switch the back dial instead of the front and then missing the shot. Thx

@@E_House here is a link to the Z6/7 online manual. It will be very similar to this procedure in your camera. Pretty much all Nikons have this ability: onlinemanual.nikonimglib.com/z7_z6/en/09_menu_guide_05_f05.html Otherwise it is simply f5 in the menu system. Menu button> f5(Customize Command Dials)>Change Main/Sub> autofocus setting and set this to 'ON'. Choose either ON or OFF and this will swap the use of the front and back command dials to suit your shooting style. The Exposure Setting 'ON/OFF' does this for the shutter speed and aperture depending on what you like your front and back command dials to do. Hope this helps and happy nikonning...

What lens are you using on the 6II? I've a 7Ii on order and have the 70-200/2.8 but will also keep my 500PF for more focal length needed shots. Thinking about the TC for the Z and the 1.4 would give me a 98-280/f4, the 500PF/f5.6 if on the FTZ, and a 750/f5.6 with the 500PF on my old D7500 body. I was thinking that the extra focal length with the 2.0TC is counterbalanced by the extra stop of light loss over the 1.4TC…and then with the 7II I can switch to DX mode at the loss of some MP obviously. Still mulling over the two Z TCs as well as the F one for the 500PF which would balance out the focal length loss when moving it to the full frame body and the loss of a stop of light isn't really relevant with the lens on a mirrorless body from a usable AF point standpoint. Anyways…just seeking opinions.

I have acquired the following lenses with the Z 6II: 24-70 f/4 S: its the kit lens but outstanding quality and not very heavy; 70-200 mm f/2.8: a beast of a lens, never seen such sharp photos truly amazing one drawback it weighs a ton, 20 mm f/1.4 lens; super lens for indoor for low light and even Astro . In addition I have the AF-s 300 mm f/4 which i can use with the FTZ adapter (which works really well). Before the Z 6II i used a D7500 so the 300 mm gave me 450. With the Z system i get no further then 200mm. I considered the teleconverter but decided to wait a bit and see what the new long lenses are like once they are released (see z roadmap). The 2 lenses i have in mind to add are 16-30mm f/4 and the 200-600 (assuming it will be no worse then f/5.6). The long pro lenses that are on the roadmap most likely will carry pro prices as well. Now I don’t mind paying $ 2600 for the 70-200 but I’m afraid the long primes will go north of 10,000

THe video button is a dead button unless you program it in Still mode. It only activates video in video mode. For still mode, it's a dead extra button to program. To record a video, you have to flip the lever from stills to video and then all your custom controls flip to movie mode custom controls which are programmable in another custom settings window.

They're there, but hit have to choose animal vs people in the AF custom settings. Just drop that setting into your "My Menu" for ease of access. :)

Great tips! Everyone else seems to map subject tracking to Fn1, but I also find Fn2 feels much better (I knew I wasn't alone haha). Hey, one other change I made - under Custom Settings > Controls > f6, set "Release button to use dial" to ON. This allows a single press of Fn buttons and your hands are free to adjust dials. Buttons un-hold after you press them again, press shutter half-way, or if the camera goes into standby. And now you have me thinking - do I still need Dynamic Area AF for action? 🤔

Thank you for the F6 tip. I hadn't thought of that and I'd been having the same trouble as Henry had with using the Record button and then having to use the front dial to change the AF mode. This solves the problem elegantly and I don't see where I'd find it a problem. This also solves the additional problem I had because I couldn't do what Henry suggests in this video (basically swap the FN1 and Rec buttons function) because I use my FN1 to Play back photos and the Rec button doesn't offer that! So, in addition to using Fn2 for tracking (just made that comment), the F6 approach should work for me, so thank you

My Z6 II and I aren't getting along as I did with my D700 & 10 prior Nikons. I've got the AF figured out, thanks to your help, but I'm having difficulty with the auto exposure. The viewfinder of the Z6 gives one the false feeling that exposure is fine whereas older SLR & DSLRs I instinctively knew I was either under or over exposed because I knew where the exposure metering was "looking". Maybe the old center weighted circle, or something else gave me the heads up as, "Hey...you need to be aware that you're over/under exposed!" I've perused the owner's manual looking for a good solution but none to my liking. Your autofocus explanations, as I said above, got that problem fixed. Suggestions on auto exposure? Thanks for the great videos! While I haven't visited PDX in awhile (friends in Helvetia and Hood River), I think the city is beautiful and would enjoy meeting you sometime.

Hey there, Hmmmm. I'm a little confused. Are you in manual mode? If so then you get the traditional exposure meter in the bottom of the viewfinder (+/- with 1/3 stop marks). If you cycle through the display options, you can also get a live histogram overlay in the Z cameras' viewfinder, which is an incredible exposure tool. Finally a tap of the play button lets you instantly see your result in the viewfinder with a three channel histogram to check exposure with precision. I find the matrix meter to be incredibly accurate even in snowy or low light scenes. Hope that helps. I think with practice you'll find it very accurate exposure tool. It would be great to have you in a workshop someday. We have a blast and always learn so much from one another (me included). - h

I returned my Z6ii because I couldn't for the life of me focus on my fast dog running towards me. I tried all the modes, but I didn't know about subject tracking! Maybe that's what I was missing.. Would this work for dogs too?

Auto area works great for me in frame filling situations. It takes adjustment from working with a DSLR. The modes are different. I have Zero issues with the type of scenario you're describing. For that kind of thing, Auto Area with no input locks a moving subject that is of any reasonable size in the frame as you track it. If it is too distant and small and you aren't moving the frame to track it, then you can try subject tracking overide to put the box on it, but the Auto Area is better as a subject gets closer and more frame filling. Just hit the back button focus repeatedly as the dog runs at you and as it gets close enough to be a good photo with the lens you have mounted, the camera will recognize the subject and lock on. If you have animal eye detect turned on, it will even lock your dog's eyes. Dead simple. My hit rate in those scenarios is FAR higher than with my D500 of old. Be sure to map Subject tracking to the front function button so you can turn it on and off with a press by your unoccupied fingers up there. The default control of OK for on and zoom out for off is just awful to try and do with a thumb that is already busy with the rear control wheel, joystick and back button focus.

I love the Nikons. I'm really not a fan of sony's ergonomics and durability. If I ever was forced, it would be Canon. Nikon just works better for me, it's built tank tough, has better landscape and night features like auto focus stacking, low light AF and 900 second metering, better glass and it's much better at AF tracking than people seen to think. What they need to improve most is marketing. Not engineering. :)

Absolutely. I used the same with my D500 and D850, but auto area and wide area (the same, but limiting where the computer is looking for a subject) is the way to go with these new cameras. :)

It is for me. I don't recommend it. The z6ii is so good and if price is really the driving force, then aps-c makes far more sense and the Z50 is an incredible little gem. The build quality, weather sealing, buffer size, backlit sensor high iso performance and incredible video capabilities just make the 6ii the far away better choice for basing an expensive set of full frame glass on.

It's there. Looks like a little target crosshair in a box under the fn button options. It's been there since firmware version 3 on the original Z's and has always been there on the ii's. First name is Hudson, but no big deal.

Custom settings menu, customize controls, function 2 button and choose from the very long list of options. It's near the top, hit OK to confirm, now that button is mapped to turn on and off subject tracking override when in auto area mode.

Not sure how you mean refocus. Eye/face detect works automatically frame wide in auto area. It's canceled by activating subject tracking, then reactivated by canceling subject tracking (fn button does both). In wide area or small area, eye/face detect is limited to subjects in the area box. :)

Just be sure and ditch the dynamic area AF you've used ubiquitously in the DSLRs. It's a legacy mode on the Zs in my opinion. Haven't touched it in years. You want auto-are subject detection with subject tracking over-ride if needed. That should be mapped to turn on and off on a front function button. On the Z9 and new Z8 the 3D tracking mode is just incredible and includes the auto subject detection, but you can direct it and grab subjects that matter to you.

Larry Small As usual, the information you share is timely, relevant and gives me insight into the Z6 ii that I want to acquire. I shoot local high school sports both indoor and outdoors with a Nikon D750 that does everything I want it to do. Nevertheless, this past Christmas, I purchased a Z50 with a kit lens for my bride of 50 years. Turns out, I use it more that she uses it and I love this camera and it's capabilities. So much so, I'm thinking of springing for a Z6 ii for my sports shooting but I have my reservations about using the Z6 ii for basketball. Fortunately, you have provided me with hope that shooting basketball with the Z6 ii may just work if done correctly. Unfortunately, in scouring the internet for videos of photographers who presently use the a Z6 ii for basketball; I've have yet to see anything close to showing me the possibilities other than description either for or against. I feel the time to move to mirrorless is now and I want to stay within the Nikon universe but I have the need to know that I will be able to focus on one particular player out of a crowd and get results comparable to what the D750 3d focus can achieve. Would you be interested in trying your hand at doing a shoot of a basketball game to demonstrate the possibilities as no photographer before you has done to date and in the process, disprove all the nay sayers?

I think the Z9 will disprove all the naysayers. When my littles get a little bigger, I'll probalby be shooting BBall, but till then between work and the family, I don't see having time. I do shoot lots of kids running around and I don't have a problem picking one out and tracking, but it will be trickier on a court and take time for the adjustment from your DSLR muscle memory. You'll feel like you're missing shots as you figure it out. I'd practice some with the Z50 on less important moments with the subject tracking and Auto area bouncing back and forth with the Fn2 button. It's the same, the Z6ii will be just a bit faster. I have a feeling the Z9 will be a lot faster and the cameras that come in it's wake will inherit that. Remember we are on gen 1.5 right now. ;-) That said, If I were headed out to shoot soccer or B-ball, I'd leave the d500 and take the Z6ii. no doubt in my mind, But I've been shooting Zs with wildlife and kids very frequently for the past 3 years. It takes time to adjust to a new way of AF handling. In Auto area, the camera looks for the closest subject you might be tracking. If it isn't the one you want, you need to hit subject tracking and lock it. if you loose subject, then let off the back-button, get that box back on target and hit it again. For fast action I usually just center the box and move the camera to put it on subject to get the lock, then you can move with it locked while you hold down the back button.

Solution to the button issue is to enable press-and-then-change in the menu rather than press-hold-and-change. Then you just click the Fn or movie button, make the change without needing to awkwardly hold down the button, and return to shooting with a half press of the shutter.

If I want to adjust aperture or shutter, in manual mode and I've just pressed to change iso or AF, then I have to press that button yet again again to get back to my manual controls on the wheels. Call me nuts, but that feels awkward and slower to me after decades of press and adjust. I just can't stand that setting myself. If you love it and are used to it, enjoy. The key for me is to keep the thumb and forefinger free for custom wheel settings, bam DOF preview on movie record frees up fn 1.

This made a lot of sense, thank you. I’m going to watch this again, with camera in hand. It’s not far away, I can see it on the coffee table... . Now, I have never made use of user modes on D80, 90, 7200 because I’m not a pro, don’t use my camera enough to know for absolute sure what I set into any user mode. This is something I need to work on. If you made a video on this , it might help a lot of us. For example, if I I had set up a U1, was in it, then camera off, out of U1, then on, would any U1 settings remain? Yes, I can and will do the experiment, but that is the sort of thing that is not obvious and is seldom discussed in what I have read. There are a lot of settings that might change and no chart I have ever seen to definitively define what is saved or not. Yes, I could do it, yes, I have little else to do under COVID, but ok, I’m too lazy.

Edward…the U modes are just a set of defaults when you engage them but you can change any needed for this particular situation. If you change to another mode besides another U mode…at least on my D7500 everything stays the same except things that get changed by whatever mode you change to. I've had my D7500 set up with U1 for wildlife and U2 for waterfalls ever since I got it…U2 has bracketing turned on and fixed 100 ISO…but it lives in U1 almost all the time. I use BBAF and manual plus auto ISO exposure mode almost exclusively except for waterfall shots. Looking forward to having 3 U modes on the 7II…don't know what I'll use the third one for just yet.

Hudson, you do know that you do not have to hold a menu selection button down while you move the command or the sub-command dials, don't you? Nikon has had this feature since they began with digital cameras a very long time ago. I am surprised by how many Nikon experts either do not know this or do not tell their viewers.

after watching several vids about the nikon AF mess yours really looks best way to go, even like the FN buttons for this you did....one thing you did not mention, there is a setting that you can unselect certain AF modes from the list to simplify what shows up when selecting with dials...( I will do that with the legacy focus modes, dont like those either). Z5 coming today, used to have a Z6ii couple yrs ago. z5 has same af

The 1st greenAF (all prior to the Z9) is far better than many think. You just have to learn and practice it. The Z8 & 9 are crazy, especially with the complete lack of any blackout. It's a bit like cheating. That's coming down the line as they build new next Gen bodies, but it will take time.
