I'm using drops bc I have a hard time concentrating, and I find it pretty addictive! each lesson has 5 minutes, but I end up doing way more than one. I'm noticing a lot of improvement in a short amount of time, and I really love that they have images for each word instead of translations... it helps the brain to associate directly, w/o the interference of your native tongue or other languages you may know (in my case, english is my 2nd language)

Thanks a lot, Billy ! I'm a hard core fan of yours (watched your online video lessons, bought three grammar books, donator...) and have been studying Korean for almost two years through various means. I already use Naver dictionary, Sejong app, Drops and, in addition, I would also recommend : * Quizlet to revise words introduced during Korean classes. Very complete to quiz oneself. * Beelinguapp : to practice reading with simple and short stories (bilingual). * Wodeu : to practice reading with short news articles. * KLyrics, to learn with songs.

Memrise is Amazing!!! The app has helped memorise so many words fast. You just have to do the rest of the work yourself like looking up the detailed meaning and writing the verbs down in sentences. It's even better. I give it a 5/5.

Besides podcasts, I also find watching Twitch streams helps too. Lots of slang and natural speak, and you can try to interact with what you know as well:) I also enjoy Duolingo and Lingodeer too, good for just casual learning and reinforcement while I’m on the couch or whatever. (they even added League of Legends terms to Lingodeer, that game is so popular there lol)

I use a mix of KZbin (your channel and TTMIK), Soundcloud and podcasts (TTMIK), Memrise, Duolingo, LingQ for Korean. I was using Lingodeer but so much is gated off, paid content that it's inaccessible and I'm paying for Lingq which seems a good way of having an app help me progress with what vocabulary, grammar etc I'm getting from Duolingo, Memrise, GO! Billy and TTMIK as well as what I've worked out in LingQ. I do plan on buying your first book as well as Vitamin Korean 1 soon though, then getting some of the beginner TTMIK books.

Along with some apps you mentioned, I also use an app called The Korn. It isn't the best app as it is relatively new but it does expose you to listen to native Koreans speaking by watching 30 second to 1 minute KZbin clips from Korean TV shows, K-Dramas, Movies and K-Pop. The downsides is that even though it quizzes you on the video you watched, there is only one question. Another downside is usually when you turn off English subtitles to focus on the Korean ones there is still English subs on the video content due to it coming from KZbin so it defeats the purpose of having the option to decide which subtitle you want to see

I made the mistake in the beginning to solely use Duolingo. After a few goes at trying to learn Korean over the years, I realized it was so difficult because it doesn’t teach ANY grammar. Now, I am just using it to help memorize as side material, while learning from stuff that’ll actually teach me XP I haven’t found a good, well rounded app that’ll teach me all that’s needed to know (that doesn’t have a massive paywall)

I watched the start of your last live stream and in the begining you were answering a few question about apps. (and then this vid apear at the top of my list! How does you tube know what I'm thinking)? I'm still a total beginner but I agree with the chat about some they mentioned. The one that wasn't mention is Busuu. So far I think it is the best. It does the one thing that you mentioned most don't do. You can record yourself speaking or writing and other app users will comment on how you did and correct your grammer or record the correct pronouciation.

The only issue with those sort of exchange apps can be the userbase. If there are users who are actively participating, then they work. If there are people on that app actively helping out, then it sounds like a useful tool :)

I have used a lot of those language learning apps in the beginning. I am now using Pimsleur. I think it's pretty good. I liked it so much I am paying to use it - currently $16 a month, so may not be for everyone. It is designed as a listen and repeat app only, giving more everyday conversation examples, while teaching new vocabulary. It does not teach grammar or how to spell anything. Again, it's a listening app only, but I have really been enjoying it. I started on the intermediate level, so I don't know what it does for beginners.

I've been doing a mixture of Duolingo (to practice the alphabet), Coursera (paid lessons to teach grammar and vocabulary), Quizlet (I create my own vocab sets - and I think the pronounciations it gives are pretty good), and of course Billy's videos. I watch a lot of K-dramas and listen to K-music. I'm about 6 months in and I can sound out words and feel pretty confident with the alphabet. Now it's time to hit vocab and grammar hard! I'm aiming to go to S. Korea in 2025!

Duolingo actually does explain those on desktop version u have an info field and it also explains on the app but it always only showes up before u start a lesson for the first time so when u just want to start u get 2 options 1 is for the info u need for the lesson the other ones is to start the lesson and because it only showes up that once before u start many ppl just miss it and cant get to it once they started the lesson. So when ur on the app and wanna see the info just look closely before starting a lesson When u manage to get to the info section on the app it explains grammar as well as sentence structures for Hangul it does explain the writing system and on desktop its always there so u just need to find it

I have a frustrating experience. Not knowing where to begin or hitting a plateau can feel demoralizing and make it hard to hit the books and study like you know you should…Having friends from other cultures makes me more creative. In fresh ways about space and how people create their own world and environment. It is best way to connect between creative thinking and cross-cultural relationships

in memrise u can use decks made by others (like in anki) for free, but you do have to use the desktop version for that which is probably to make you think you have to pay to get more access. (you add people's decks using the desktop version, then you can use them on both your desktop and the app) i personally only use decks made by others, and I guess most people do too which is why it's recommended the only thing i dont really like about it it's how I feel like it moves past words too fast, but it's a minor problem since it shows you words you have learned again later on to review them, and you can even mark words that are hard for you and they'll make you practice them more or you can manually go and practice levels again yourself

I actually quite enjoy LingoDear. It is just my kind of app. It gives a grammar lesson at the beginning of the unit and it gives you practice with the grammar. And it doesn't cram vocabulary. It gives you 4 or 5 words and you work with them. And I like LingoDear over Duolingo because when I got Duolingo to practice my Korean, it wouldn't let me go past the alphabet. Which was super awkward romanisation. With LingoDear, you can learn the alphabet at your pace if you even have to. You can jump right into the lesson. And if you get the lifetime membership, you don't have to worry about it cyphening your bank account. And it gives you access to all their Languages they offer. In my opinion, I like LingoDear over all. I'm not trying to promote it, I am just giving my opinion on it

I like playing a game called Hangul Punch. It's an animated game where you are a little white dog learning to box and you have to read and select the right syllables. It's difficult to explain, but each time you get the right spelling/syllable/word your character punches and then k.o.'s the opponent. I like to play it timed so that I increase my reading speed. It teaches me vocabulary as well as reading ability. Down side, it doesn't do a very good job with pronunciation sometimes and spelling is off sometimes. I mean, it is using romanji for the answers so there are going to be issues. But, it's fun to play when I'm particularly bored and don't have my Go! Billy Korean book with me. 😉 (see what I did there.) LOL

Can you make an updated video reviewing apps for learning Korean? I’m sure there’s way more apps now and I believe Memrise and Drops have gotten a bit better since you reviewed them. Memrise because they now have clips of native speakers incorporated in their lessons. I’m hoping that they lessons are less awkward now since they have the clips of native speakers speaking the language. Also Drops might be better as well, they still have a lot of topics locked but it shows you which ones are locked and which ones you can learn. I think it’s also a good way for beginners to memorize Hangeul, it helped me to memorize it after I learned Hangeul from coursera. Lastly there’s more apps like Papago, TEUIDA, Cake, and LENGO and I was hoping you could review them and maybe review some others? Thank you! 감사합니다! 😊

Dars Alexandersson i use Eggbun and i think it’s helped a lot :) it gives explanations and it’s free! I just hate how I’d have to buy a membership in order to do more than one lesson a day.

Have you ever thought about making an app for learning korean?
@deorojeu
@deorojeu 4 жыл бұрын
LingoDeer used to be completely free. I used it when I first started learning Korean years ago. It gave me a huge boost as a beginner learner that I followed into Intermediate in less than a year. It's such a great app, the lessons are long and detailed, but the paywall agreeably sucks. They didn't have to go so hard on the prices. I wanted to take the intermediate course, but by the time I got to it, they put up the paywall. Billy's content is just as great, if not better. And way less expensive.

I had the same exact experience as you! I used Lingodeer a few years back as a complete beginner and it helped set the foundation for me and helped me so much! Its grammar lessons were actually so good and different from Duolingo's. But then I when I went back to use it again I was shocked by the sudden high prices. It's a shame they took advantage of their high ratings. They should've at least allowed the original users who promoted their app and gave it high stars and reviews to be able to continue like before....
@deorojeu
@deorojeu 4 жыл бұрын
@@VoVina111 I understand why they would put up a paywall, since the content is too good to be completely free and they need to make money from it in order to continue on... but I don't see why it should be that expensive. They're asking too much. If they want to charge people that much, they should start adding more features to improve the value of the app. So far all they did was add a female voice as far as I know. Maybe they should add video lectures for visual learners and a chatbot to simulate conversations, like many free apps have.
@VoVina111
@VoVina111 4 жыл бұрын
@@deorojeu Yeah I agree with you. I also always thought it was too good to be free. It felt unfair for them almost lol. But now with it being so expensive, the problem is that people are comparing it to Duolingo too much and saying "well at least Duolingo is free" so they don't choose this one anymore. They really need to do something about that if they want more people to prefer their app...
@deorojeu
@deorojeu 4 жыл бұрын
@@VoVina111 Yeah that's also true. Like, what's the point of spending years programming and planning lessons and writing out grammar notes that were created to be more effective than it's competitor's, for no one to use your app because you literally made it unavailable to the common public? Meanwhile your competition's popularity grows because you're sending all of your original and future users away to find cheaper content with your ridiculously high prices. Like Billy said, I could buy an entire textbook set for half of the lifetime membership price. I found a set of beginner-intermediate-advanced Korean textbooks for $40, and the books are thick too- so there is possibly as much to learn as anyone could find on LingoDeer, if not more. Which goes to prove that their prices are unfair...

It's not that you shouldn't use it *ever*, but it shouldn't be used in most cases beginners would experience. It's definitely not the general way to say "let's" in most situations.

All translators have their issues, but if you have to use one Papago usually works fine for basic conversations.

I also like Dongsa. It is very helpful (although the UI is a bit boring). It give all the conjugations for a verb and shows you the conjugation breakdown. On mobile you need to know the base word to search but on desktop you can search by the full conjugated word. Very helpful when you dont know a verb is irregular.

Lingodeer doesn't have good grammar 😔😲?! I'm lucky because I started using the app before they started the payments so some of the old users were grandfathered in and still have full unlimited access without having to pay. Im just getting back into learning Korean so I guess I'll use it in combination with other apps so that I dont learn incorrectly.

Hello, I wonder if anyone can help me to locate an app or a machine that can translate from audio Korean into English in text in real-time. I need it to sit in a meeting while Korean is spoken. Google Translate has that function, but the accuracy rate is too low. Most of the machines for travelers can only hold up for a few sentences, not long enough.
