Life was so basic. You either played sports, and went out or you were watching tv, or on the phone, or even just doing things like gil was doing, just filming around, and living life. Todays generation im sure would not live long in the 80s with that there was to do. 90s you can make a case of more so, but again life in the 90s like music, shows etc are still a big hit today, because all we had was those things to enjoy from, and thats why it hits home today, even if its not as entertaining in compare to what we have today.

@ouknow1446 Жыл бұрын
Indeed, each decade is a refinement of the previous one which means progress. So be thankful for it. Taking a home for granted was short-lived and may have been the peak of progress because people are again valuing being able to get one. That's a sign of decline based on direction of trend not the value system itself.

Yes, in 1988 we still had orange carpet (though not shag); off white beige appliances in our new 1980 home; no built-in micro; each bedroom had its own carpet color and paint based on family preference. Furniture was from 1970 era, orange, white and brown. We had a color TV and a B&W. Old 60s furniture in our family room w/its 4 walls of fake wood paneling. My parents bated music but I loved it and had my 1978 boombox. I'd been married and gone in 1986 but folks' house still looked the same and my young hubby and I had remnants of once-good furniture from my grandmother (1930s-1950s), parents & pals (early 1970s.) We owned a new bedroom set that I paid off over 18 months on layaway: the huge, dark, heavy repro Victorian stuff that was massively popular in late '80s. Ughhh. I did keep my 1978 stereo w/cassette/vinyl/8-track combo that my husband made me throw away in 1987. I can't believe I let him - I knew that would one day be cool to have (it had broken - but he never replaced it)

That was seriously typical middle class SoCal 80’s home and what’s striking to me is how much more floor space & how much less clutter people had. There was not an excessive amount of furniture or decor, not counters covered with small appliances, just enough furniture for people to sit, eat, sleep, study and store clothes and a much smaller amount of stuff, maybe a single bookshelf or desk. There aren’t a bunch of display cases and ornamental pieces, not a bunch of throw pillows and throw blankets, Mom has lots of clothes but women have for who knows how long. The side yards aren’t full of stuff, there’s not an entire living room of furniture in the back yard. The boom box in the bathroom is typical of a teenager, music was everything back then. I miss those days, we were happy. It makes me want to streamline my life.

initially, computers, "home computers", PCs and yes, macs too made a significant dent in the space as you describe. add to that: behemoth desktops complete with boxy monitors disliked heat. with the then-price of computer components or replacing them, such forced the issue of air conditioning. it did for us anyways. my parents had it installed during mid eighties for that reason. boombox ->late 90s: burning CDs, or at least storing music on home computer or mp3 player (instead of on lps/cassettes -> cds...) and being able to direct to speakers of choice elsewhere in house, or at least in the room, to me at least, that was computers starting to give back some of their above mentioned space. living room's worth of furniture in backyard: depends. people had more friends/family over, whether as spontaneous visits or Entertaining simply because (without internet) wherever you were, there you were. so at least during the nice parts of the year, nearly all the outdoor furniture was frequently used -until it was taken down into basement to be stored until spring. oh. larger percentage of people lived in northeastern midwestern snowbelt states as opposed to sunbelt region. most of metro los angeles was not considered a hellhole either.

Especially since my mother was just like the song, stuck in 1985. Its nice to see a video that pretty much captures what the world was like for me as a kid. My mother passed away this yr, so now i feel even more of an attachment to the old way of life. Kids these days dont know what they are missing. They are trapped behind a screen. Coincidentally, a lot of this video was shot on my 4th birthday…Now I’m 37 and I live in a very similar house that was built in 1981. Was interested to see what houses like mine looked like inside when they were new as I was too young to remember much from back then and my current home has been renovated a lot since the 80’s. Interesting video, thanks for uploading it.
@davepane7306 Жыл бұрын
1981 & 82 were definitely transitional years for builders/designers. The color pallets in homes had lightened up a little bit and there was a more minimal approach to the typical materials used from the 70s. Unfortunately by the end of the 80s it was all just considered very out-dated. People were sick of anything that resembled the 1970s.
@gmay8493 Жыл бұрын
@@davepane7306 Very true. It’s an interesting era In design, actually…Our house has a layout, flow, openness and lots of natural light from large windows in a similar way to a lot more modern homes. It feels a lot more familiar in design than many houses built in the 60s and 70s I’ve been in…But it also has very low ceilings, plus lots of brown wood lurking under layers of paint. Literally all of the door frames, baseboards, dado rails, cupboards, etc are all the same shade of dark brown underneath. One of the bathrooms still has the original dark brown tiled floor, which actually still looks pretty nice to be honest. I imagine when new it still looked pretty dark in here due to the decor. We found some old offcuts of carpet rolled up in the attic which I assume are original. Thick pile carpet, all in peach color. Probably went pretty well with all that brown wood. I’ve got kind of a soft spot for early to mid-80s houses. Modern enough to avoid a lot of the major nasties like lead paint and asbestos (although probably still some hiding somewhere) while still being built at a time when quality mattered and land was still cheap enough to have a big yard, especially here in the south.
@davepane7306 Жыл бұрын
@@gmay8493 also since you like the bathroom tile, I can tell you that it's almost 100% certain that bathroom had a matching brown toilet and possibly even sink too. It might have been a Kohler suite. Typically brown tiled bathroom floors from 1981 also had brown ceramic Kohler products installed because Kohler had the most options and were just beautiful and timeless. You can still find vintage stock online now days. Kohler's "Lady Vanity" sink was an amazing master bathroom sink from 1981, and it came in a couple shades of brown.

I buoght a 2 story house built in 1975 bceause it was just too cool. I didn't even upgrade it. I liked it the way it is. It's retro and comfortable. I don't like the new houses they're all stale and boring and have the same HOme Depot building material in it....windows, tile, it's all the same cookie cutter nightmare.
@gmay8493 Жыл бұрын
@@KB-ke3fi Yeah, there’s a lot to be said for owning an older house. They were also usually built pretty solidly and with a lot more of the buyer’s specifications in mind and way more input than there is today…Plus, HOAs weren’t as much of a thing back then, so no busybodies to tell me what to do with my own property…Sure, there’s maintenance costs you may not have to pay on a new home (no asphalt shingle roof or AC unit is going to last for 45 years…) but it’s still worth it having the piece of mind that the house was built solidly in the first place. Plus, I see a bunch of houses built as recently as the 90s and early 2000s that look like absolute trash today simply because they were built from cheap, crappy materials which weren’t maintained properly.

This is awesome. I love and appreciate this so much. The 80s were a great time. I was 9 going on 10 in April of 1988. It's trippy, because I remember April 12, 1988 very clearly. That was my baby sister's first birthday, and we have videos from that very day at our house. So we see quite a bit of the house on the main floor from those videos. My memories of the day are very vivid. Between that and the videos. It's cool to think that you were doing all of this when my sister's party at home was going on with my grandfather recording video. It was a fun day with my cousins, aunt and uncle, grandparents, and neighborhood friend being over. A year later in July of 1989 my mom walked throughout most of the house with the video camera, then I did myself with one of my own tapes later that day. Not in this much detail, though. I wish we did. We missed a few rooms as well. We moved from there in 1994. Great videos. I love that style of mirror above the fireplace. A lot of homes had that back in the 80s. Thanks for sharing.
