April 12, 2024 Afternoon: Eggs revisited

Jackie buried the eggs last night but for some reason they are still exposed today. Shadow sees the eggs when he delivers a stick, as does Jackie, who arrives after him.
Shadow leaves first, but returns after Jackie flies away, so both spend some time alone with the eggs.
Jackie does some aerating but doesn't bury the eggs like she did yesterday. Shadow spends some time arranging the sticks before leaving. Working on the nest means they are getting ready for the next clutch. But at the same time, it would be hard for J & S to ignore the eggs until they are buried deep in the nest or eaten by ravens.

At 6:40pm Jackie is eating her failed eggs. This is good for her as far as calcium for her next possible brood. Incredible behavior.

They’ve mated several times in the past week or so. Maybe Jackie will lay eggs again? I so hope that happens

@@judithgraff4420 My understanding that only happens once. It'll be next year before more babies will arrive again. She's only fertile but during certain months.

Since the ravens didn't help with destroying the first eggs. J&S need to cover them up, so that they can try it again with a new clutch. Some birds/eagles have more than one nesting attempt per year. And with Shadow🦅, you can expect they'll try again 🙂.

@@Xokkeikatt Bald Eagles in Alaska lay in April so another clutch is very possible in southern California. They are mating daily so they will try again.

J&S are definitely trying again this year. We'll see if their successful. Or, we'll have to wait until next year. And Jackie did cover them up once already, and Shadow had to uncover them, to see them one more time🦅. Good Luck J&S..... And the eagles at Glacial Garden, in Juneau Alaska, have only just begun there prepping of their nest. Last year they had an eaglet named Hope.

It's been a joy watching these two eagles the last few years; and I would miss them if they weren't around anymore. But they aren't here to entertain me; and If they continue to breed so early in the year, then they would be much better served by relocating elsewhere. The weather in BBV was brutal this winter; and I fear that it's going to stay that way in future years. Location, location, location. Of course, they could begin the breeding cycle later in the year (March?); but I don't see their rhythms changing. I understand that they are "built" for the cold and supposedly can keep their eggs well incubated in winter weather. But seeing Jackie literally invisible in a snow igloo, repeatedly, for days at a time, is too much. That had to affect the latest outcome. So move on, you two, to where the environment will give you a better chance to bear offspring.

Eggs are not going to hatch. Incubation time is weeks past due. Now J&S will mourn the loss of their off springs. Gradually leave nest at longer times. Maybe next season!

I doubt they "mourn", particularly in the way we humans do. More likely they experience confusion, but not loss.

Female Bald Eagles are 25 to 30% larger than males. It's easier to tell when they're right beside each other.

Perhaps they need to relocate to a different area or state. Didn't know if that's even possible. The weather has been so horrible for them.

Jackie didn't "bury" the two eggs; she just fussed with the fluff until the camera could no longer see them. They were exposed to both birds all this time. As for "aerating", I'm not sure that's what's going on; I originally thought they were pushing fluff down between the sticks below to block the wind coming through, like chinking between the logs of a log cabin. Then I thought they, mostly Jackie, were pulling out fluff that got covered in the goo from the broken egg because it smelled bad and was unsanitary, not that they are at all aware of sanitation; they do what they do by stimulus/response. There was goo because Shadow sampled the inside of the broken egg and that could be seen. I have been curious to learn how the failed eggs do get removed naturally. I would have thought the ravens would have come during the recent long time periods off the nest.

Apparently they have been reusing this nest. I was watching a pair in the National Arboretum and after 4 or so seasons chose to make another nest in a different tree. Now, until or if they move the cameras we cannot watch the pair.

They've used this nest for several years, so they probably will. Can't be completely sure, since eagles sometimes move on, but it's likely.

It's different for every bird. Hummingbirds hatch in 15-18 days where eagle eggs take 35 days with the pip (egg hole) appearing about 4 days prior to hatching fully.

Why did this happen, what was the reason?

We don't know. Just like with human pregnancies, sometimes things go wrong and no one can say why. Perhaps the humidity was wrong, or the temperature was too cold, or they just weren't viable from the moment Jackie laid them. Or all of the above. Or something else entirely. The one thing we know for certain is that Jackie and Shadow did everything they could for their eggs; it wasn't a failure of love or care.

Personally I think pollution in the lake has caused one, or both, eagles to be infertile. It’s 2 years running now. As a person suffering with chemical toxicity it is my conclusion.

It's frustrating, isn't it? Their feet are perfectly formed to simply grab and remove, but they aren't programed to do that; they simply do what they do by genetically ordered stimulus/response. They aren't really aware that the eggs are no good. I also get frustrated with the sticks; I want to reach in and place the sticks where and how they make sense instead of that mindless fussing with the sticks.

They will continue to use the same nest year after year. That's how the nests become so large over time. They won't move on.

Only one egg got broken so they abandoned the nest.. makes no sense

They eggs are over due by 30+ days. They did not abandon their nest, although the eggs will not hatch. 😢
