@@jaredpatterson1701 and what's crazy is it wasn't of his nor any other meteorologists fault that morning, the models didn't pick it up. It basically wasn't supposed to happen, it's almost as if the atmosphere was shedding the skin of what was actively in the atmosphere, that tends to dissipate or not even exist in those hours, and prepping itself for the evening. Ominous to watch this briefing.

I don't think most meteorologists realized until this outbreak that major outbreaks like this could be a normal generational event for tornado prone areas. We are quick to quote this one or 1974, but there were similar massive ones in 1932 and 1953. It tends to happen every 20-35 years.

I wish we had meteorologists in my area that offered CAPE data & such other detailed data on the news... but I think folks in California wouldn't know what to do with all that, and he'd lose them in about 10 seconds. Most Californians just want to know when the low clouds are burning off at the coast so they can go surfing in the summer.

I wish that conditions had allowed an am video 27 April 2011. That morning forecast STPs were forecast to reach 12 with the Supercell composite of 50, both new records. By that afternoon even those numbers were blown out of the water.

The Storm Prediction Center should've already had a High Risk for Alabama on Day 2.
@sandysandsand6273 Жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly, the SPC wasn’t completely sure whether or not the morning convection would slightly inhibit afternoon energy, and so they probably waited until the early morning when the convection was already trucking across the Southeast.

They were predicting this for a week out and they got this one right. Unfortunately it was worse than even they predicted. In one day there were 15 tornadoes in official rating terms with winds over 165 mph (EF4) or greater. With Hackleburg/Phil Campbell being the strongest and to me that was similar to the May 3 1999 Moore/Bridge Creek storm. Hard to believe this super outbreak was 11 years ago now

The thing that blows my mind is how the SPC didn’t even issue a High Risk Outlook for April 27, 2011. It seems like James Spann had at least some idea of what was going to happen, but how the SPC didn’t issue a High Risk outlook a day in advance blows my mind considering the parameters in place.
@ILoveOldTWC2 жыл бұрын
I agree. They should've had a High Risk on their Day 2 convective outlook.
@williamtrakas31422 жыл бұрын
Not sure the SPC has ever issued a day 2 high risk although I could be wrong. But yes if there was ever a day, this was it of course. They did upgrade it in the first day 1.

Well of course, that's a typical aspect of convective outlooks. They increase when the event gets closer. The morning of April 27th it was upgraded to a high risk, go check out their archive. Why was it not a high the day before? It's a matter of how data was read. There's always uncertainty.
