I remember seeing this as it happened, it was disheartening to see that huge funnel tearing up the city, knowing I as well as millions were watching people die and lose their homes. My heart goes out to all affected and I hope rebuilding is going good.

Oh I remember this well! I lived through the 1974 outbreak but it was nothing like 2011. Never have I seen so many tornado emergencies. They were all over the place and the poor forecasters just couldn't keep up. They just kept coming in - more and more and more. They did a good job though. I do remember going out in behind our building at work which was just a metal building that would provide no protection. I remember the sky being all green and yellow and sick looking and you could almost reach up and touch the clouds they were so low. The sirens were going off and I decided we were leaving and going to an employees basement that lived very close by. I called my boss and told him and he was irate! "If God wants to take you he will just take you! If it's your time you have no control over that!" I said, "Yeah, but God also gave me a brain to use common sense and get out of a building that was built for $1.98 and to a place of safety!" His concern? "Just make sure you clock out before you leave!" We were never allowed to have a TV because, "You might watch Oprah." Fortunately by that time you could watch the live stream online and see what was going on.

Imagine thinking that mindset is sane. Hopefully you found a new workplace after that.

@zachmamaw There were likely numerous EAS alerts in the areas affected by the tornadoes.

Actually a majority of the state was unable to receive warnings through NOAA transmitters due to the morning storms that took out the west Alabama transmitter

Some states have more than one municipality with the same name. E.g., I think there are four Washingtons in New Jersey alone. It really doesn't cause too many problems.

I've been a skywarn storm spotter and storm chaser for seven years and I use the April 27th 2011 super tornado out break to study so I can better stay safe while I'm in the field

LOL, have not bothered to even turn on The Weather Channel since this comment was made back in 2011. I suppose it has only gotten worse since then.

I remember that day very well. I live in Cleveland, TN which is right outside of Chattanooga. I was at my school (I was taking college classes at the time) in Chattanooga when the first one came through that morning. After that, they let us out early for the rest of the day so I rushed back to Cleveland to get my daughter from the babysitters, and I picked my son up from school early. We lived in a mobile home at the time so we spent a good part of the evening at Walmart hanging out. 2-3 miles down the road from my house was wiped out. Fortunately my house was spared.

@zachmamaw Not in this case. The person who put the video up lives in New England, so no EAS would be done there. The giveaway: the cities listed at the bottom of the screen.
