A newscast about the April 6, 1982 snowstorm from Channel 8 in New Haven, CT showing downtown. Photos around the northeast too. Extending from the midwest to the northeast it dumped from up to 22 or so inches with drifting. The bad thing about it is that it got into the 20s and with the windchill factor it hovered near zero despite brilliant blue skies and strong April sunshine. The April 1, 1997 blizzard had Boston getting 25 inches plus thunder and lightning storms (one person killed by lightning while shoveling). Below someone explains why this 1982 was significant. The temperatures were record-breaking for April. It beat out April 13, 1875's 10 inches.
Here are some snowfall amounts from the April 1982 storm. These are highest measured, as CT had 7-14 inches depending where you were and the snowdrifts:
Philadelphia, PA: 3.5 inches
New York City, NY (Central Park): 9.6 inches
Boston, MA: 13.3 inches
Grafton, NY: 22.8 inches
Albany, NY: 17.7 inches
Portland, ME: 15.9 inches
Worcester, MA: 15.0 inches
Hartford, CT: 14.1 inches
Concord, NH: 13.9 inches
Newark, NJ: 12.8 inches
Allentown, PA: 11.4 inches
Long Island, NY: 12 inches
Detroit, MI: 7.4 inches
Why the APRIL 6, 1982 Blizzard Stands Alone And Will Probably Not Be Surpassed In Our Lifetime by CAT5Andrew:
The March 31 and April 1, 1997 blizzard dumped more snow in New England and Upstate NY and PA, but it didnt have the Arctic air that the 1982 storm had, which truly made for conditions that day which wont be surpassed or even equaled in my lifetime.
I still cannot believe that in the middle of that epic day with maximum solar heating, the temperature was in the mid 20s with blowing powdery snow. What is not known or is forgotten is how the Arctic cold lasted for several days with the snowpack still intact for several days Tough for March, unheard of in April.
To have several consecutive nights below freezing with some temps in the 20s for lows (21 degrees is the record for Apri 7 1982) simply amazes me when I look back on it. I have seen April snow since then and will again, but not with those temperatures, and not with powderery snow like that day.

I do so well remember it so well of getting 18 inches of that white stuff called snow. We also got that amount on December 6, 1980. Reason I remember it so well is I totaled my Caddy in that storm. Four months to the day for the same amount of snow.

I can't recall the 1980 one, but the 1978 one most everybody here remembers. 18 inches isn't too big of deal in light of a few years ago I went our with a ruler and measured 24 inches and drifts as high as 34 inches. 18 is still a lot because shoveling 10 inches like recently is a big pain and there are still little bits of snow here where the sun doesn't reach. Yikes, that your car got totaled! The 1978 was so bad that my neighbor used his horse to check out the road. My father saved the newspaper from the 1978 storm and even though the storm was in early February it didn't melt until April. School had to go until June 22nd. My parents were in the Bahamas when it happened. I have a photo of the snow plow mound next to our back door...it's huge! Are you thus in New England or nearby? The plus side was the ski resorts in Vermont, etc. were happy. People in my town have a Facebook page that talks about storms. People love sharing their weather experiences. The 1982 flood was bad here too and took out chunks of dirt under the railroad tracks that you could stand under the rails, even over 6 feet tall and stick your head through the rails. They never rebuilt it and the train stopped. That was quite a storm too. It got as high as nearly 15 feet www.ryanhanrahan.com/2012/05/12/the-great-1982-flash-flood/ We lived next to a swamp and old canal river and the water was rushing over the road like crazy. Our house was on an incline from the swamp but it went over our driveway and was so close to our house and since our house was 200 years old it had a door going into a dirt cellar. If the water had seeped through the door it would have been a muddy mess. I really feel for people whose houses are damaged and in a case in Texas when I lived there, an employee's house was swept away. I'd be crying like a baby.

I don't remember this one C? I do remember the April 1st one in 1997 well because everything got shutdown including the T and the trollies. I was living in Boston and although it was beautiful to look at from my 18th floor apartment on Bowdoin St but it was tough walking for sure. I hope the snow is done and gone for this year. After getting sicteen inches a week ago I had enough to last me for the next two winters. Good to hear from you C~ Rob/Boston

I thought I would reply here..... Thank you for the kind words. I'm doing ok, same old same old. It seems the only time you hear from me is when bad weather hits your area. I sill watch alot of your videos, I just don't post anything. The storm is probably hitting right now as I type. I just want to know that you are safe & doing well. Plus I always love hearing from ya. Take care Sweetie. - Pete

We got the snow, but here along the coast we have rain now so it's making the snow heavy. I did some shoveling because they say it's going to snow again, I don't know. Very yucky out. Thanks for caring. (:
