3:49 A lot of people rag on the Enterprise D refit, but I've always rather liked it. My only real issue with the design is the same as my main issue with the Galaxy class in the first place: the saucer is too wide relative to the ship for my tastes. Apart from that I think she's a gorgeous ship, and I love the idea that Riker keep her in service. I know of lot of the complaints about the ship are due to the third nacelle, but from an aesthetic point I feel it really works. Actually in general I do like a lot of the tri and quad-nacelle ships from Star Trek, they just look really good. I am aware that a lot of the issues people have with additional nacelles are due to the original idea that the ships should only have two nacelles at all times, but I feel you can still have two being the norm and justify more or less nacelles. Just like in real life you have a balance between efficiency and redundancy. Generally speaking, less generators= more efficiency/lower redundancy, more generators = less efficiency/more redundancy. Basically if you go from one generator to two, you double your redundancy but you also double your chances of a failure, but if you do have a failure you've still got power. Each additional generator after that will continue to increase both redundancy and the chance of breakdown, to the point where you are almost guarantied to have an engine down. Now add in the fact that each generator has to be synchronised which all the others, plus all the extra work each generator would cause, you very quickly head towards the idea of two being the best of both worlds. So in Star Trek my personal cannon suggests that the Federation in particular would try to stick to two nacelles whenever possible, but might use three or four if necessary. Reasons for them doing so could include: Greater redundancy, especially in a ship expected to take a lot of battle damage or an ultra deep range vessel. Technological limits, for example; at the time they don't have a more powerful nacelle available, so the only way to generate a stronger warp field is to use more. 'Cheap' upgrades as the class is slowly replaced; as they decommission vessels the various components could be used to not only keep the other vessels of that class going, but also to give them a bit of an upgrade on the cheap. This is probably what Riker did with the Enterprise, add a third nacelle from a decommissioned sister ship, perhaps the warp core as well and probably several of the weapon systems too. Apart from the Spinal Lance and the time taken to do the upgrades, he probably managed to upgrade the ship very cheaply. The downside to the extra nacelle(s) is extra maintenance, extra breakdown & greater complexity when configuring/balancing the warp field. Alternatively there might be occasions when you'd only have a single nacelle, perhaps in wartime, when you need to build a large amount of ships quickly, but don't necessarily need a huge amount of range or redundancy. Since I should imagine a nacelle is a very expensive and time consuming component of a vessel, perhaps even as much as 10-15% of the vessel, cutting one out would dramatically decrease your construction costs and times, while at the same time you could reasonably easily add a second Nacelle if needed later, at least with Federation designs. TLDR: Enterprise D Refit/Dreadnought & other Dreadnoughts = Cool. And it works, because of reasons.

Another ensign dead because power overflows from the shield! Whatever is the use of knowing about warp speed, defector shields, phasers, photon torpedoes, neutrino inverters and tons of sciency crap if you can't even remember to build surge protectors on your bridge workstations !
@novacolonel52874 жыл бұрын
It felt counter-immersive all the time that all opponents had to continously shoot at the federation ships for almost minutes before anyone decided to raise shield, take evasive action or fire back. They would just sit there, taking hits, not reacting. Who would do that?

They retconned this by saying the warp scale was updated so that warp 10 was infinite velocity. Hence, warp speeds of TOS days =/= warp speeds of VOY days.
@daevydjae5 жыл бұрын
TOS also had over warp 10 in one of the episodes. Not consistent at all.
@rekrn123455 жыл бұрын
@@daevydjae They updated the warp scale since tos. Their warp 6 is like TNG warp 1. In Voyager and beyond it was changed to an exponential scale where 10 is infinity. Every time they add a .1 to the end of 9 they double in speed.

The cliche "peemission.to come aboard," I don't think I've ever seen anyone respond with the phrase "permission DENIED ." That would create an interesting situation.
@neutrino78x3 жыл бұрын
not on Star Trek but it does happen. As Petty Officer of the Deck -- the armed enlisted guard topside on a submarine while in port -- I denied permission a few times. It normally means they have to wait for escort (don't have clearance/need to know since our missions are classified). One time in The Offcrew Office Building, I was between boats, transferring to the USS Asheville SSN-758 from the USS Florida SSBN-728, when an NCIS guy tried to get past me. You have to have the right badge (with a photo on it) showing you have clearance to enter the building and he did not, as he was just NCIS, not a submariner. I told him to wait for escort and he boldly walked past. I got in his face and said "let's try this again. We're on the same side but I am willing to die before letting someone get past me. WAIT for escort." He waited for escort. lol. I guess he was used to people standing watches like that who hadn't been underway (the Army calls it being deployed) yet. But I had served oboard submarines for about 3 years at that point and knew the score and he wasn't getting by me. Even though it was unarmed watch and as an NCIS man I imagine he had a gun. But the Master at Arms was just down the hall and they have shit tons of rifles, able to deploy at a moment's notice, and of course the US Marines do security for "upper base" in general. lol. btw officers who are assigned to the boat normally say "I have permission to come aboard"....I used to say that to the POOD when somebody else was standing that watch, just to fuck him up lol, since I was enlisted.
