Gareth Clayton Buy a scarifyer and attach it to your lawnmower and put some ear defenders on (Also known as wireless headphones delivering off Alexa!) and away you go. Seriously I do do this every end of September and again early March and then seed and feed my lawn and it’s brilliant, can’t tell any discolouration from the dogs at all!!

Can't believe how quiet that tractor cab is Harry. My memories of dragging cambridge rollers around as a kid was that it was deafening! I've still got an old Ford 4000 - and get the mickey taken by all the 'proper' farmers for wearing ear defenders. But then they've all got hearing aids having spent a lifetime's work without PPE.

I used to have an old Zetor and the exhaust had snapped off so I used the exhaust silencer off my Honda CBR 600 which I had knocking around after I had fitted an aftermarket exhaust to it, made an interesting sound but I did use ear protection as I did when on the tractor mower because after six or seven hours you could really notice the effect on your hearing.

I call my exhaust a streamlined racing mod, as it lies back at about 45°. (Truth is, I had an argument with a low branch whilst too busy looking out the back!) There are lots of old tractors still chugging around the lanes here in Normandy. I'm quite popular with French friends for sourcing parts in the UK - always, always significantly cheaper than the same bits here. But the wine, cider and calvados - now that's where the local market scores!

That is why American farmers still think and hopeTrump is for them. They are hurting from the tariffs, but most of them can take a bad year or two if their markets got better in the long run. Some can't of course and some will go bankrupt, but farmers are used to good and bad years and they can take it. It seems to be a business with a 5-7 year long horizon. Problem will probably be if the next few years keep being lean years, but by then, if the farmers go belly up, it does not matter if it was Trump or Brexit or the demand during corona crashing. They have a long view and if they are gone, they are gone. That is my limited view and understanding of the farming business, but basically they have had bad years before and budget and plan accordingly.

Tell us how farmers deal with a bad year and how long a horizon is for a farm economically. Because in most businesses, huge investments in hardware and bad years equals bankrupcy. But farmers seem to have planned for that more than most other businesses. When does it economically seriously hurt a farmer and what constitutes "good years".

SUGGESTION : Can you please explain the difference between herbicide and fungicide; how a herbicide knows to only kill weeds (and not the crop); the types of herbicides used; and what the impact of herbicides/ fungicides is on mammals, bees & other insects, and ground water. We all clapped tonight for our NHS workers and rightfully so but let's not forget our farmers and all they go through to put food on our plate. They are hard hit at the moment. Please support your local farm shops and suppliers. Especially the dairies. Our local dairy has a milk drive through. Before last week they were tipping their milk down the drain until a FB plea. Now they are running out as people are queuing for their drive through milk!! Awesome just awesome. Way to go Britain!

Harry I've worked on fairly large scale grain farms in Western Canada and I'll be doing the same this growing season do to losing my job in oil/gas (cover 19 price collapse). GPS navigation/plotting and auto-steer is used extensively over here to prevent overlap/waste and reduce operator fatigue. I think using gps could be very advantageous for your tamping, not to mention herbicide application.

Harry Here in Spain water problem could only be solved by drainage systems. Other big issue is how to apply herbicide from December to March if you have lot of water and is not possible to get into de crops. What do you think of DRONES for herbicides?

Great vids. Reminds me of being a young lad being brought up in a farming community. Planting strawberries, later picking them along with rhubarb, rasps and tatties in the local tattie holidays. With regard to the rabbits decimating the crop. Would be well worth your while getting to know some local air rifle enthusiasts to keep the bunny numbers down. Also provides a free meal if done correctly.

B. Lo It’s bloody hard work. Watch the Yorkshire Shepherdess. Day starts at 04:30ish and doesn’t finish till nearly 23.00 and that’s 7 days a week 365days a year, and she’s got 9 kids to manage as well, oh and I nearly forgot a great tea rooms for people linking through North Yorkshire. She and the rest of her Owen family work exceptionally hard in all weathers, including Christmas Day!!!
