There's a lot to be said for riding an older used bike. They're typically cheap, less complicated, easier to work on, and not so dependent on dealers. My current ride was 16 years old with 36,000 miles on the clock when I bought it for $750US. It takes me to all the same places as guys on bikes that cost more than 10 times as much. I gave it a full service over the winter and I won't be surprised if I get another 36,000 trouble-free miles out of it.

I actually totally agree. I spent HOURS trawling through the classifieds for options. The only things that would do what I want would be Honda 750 Africa twin, Yam Super Tenere 750 or similar. Sadly those bikes are CRAZY expensive in Germany right now! Over half the price of a new bike for something over 20 years old! 🤣

Paying that little for a bike here in the UK and you'll get a bike that is falling apart. I paid £2400 for my now 23 y/o Kawasaki Ninja ZX9r in March 2021 with 16k miles, done almost seven thousand trouble free miles until I got unlucky and the head gasket went, I think only due to it being left outside under a cover for five years, otherwise the engine is great, and the bike overall is as good as expected with it's history. There are some great low mileage old bikes at grat prices out there.

I completely agree, same problem here in the south of Germany, no matter what brand. I had the same wobbling front wheel, when I test rode a T7. At least, they did't tell me that it was alright, but I bought my T7 somewhere else. The good thing with Yamaha, you can do the service yourself, because you don't need the warranty.

The rear suspension is good, the front suspension is not. A quick perusal of advrider will show you that every rider that had a suspension guy tear into the forks noticed that the shims were bent or smashed into oblivion (mine were the latter with 620 miles on the clock). The front suspension also has an odd setup in that it is mid-valve only instead of the traditional base and mid-valve. I am finally getting around to swapping out the fork cartridges to deal with that second issue (thankfully we have three different options) so I can get more adjustability. Aprilia would have been much better off just going with the same traditional fork setup the Tenere uses. They are both Kayaba 43mm, but the internals differ considerably. The shocks are actually the same and you can swap performance parts for the Tenere into the Tuareg shock as a result (KTech makes a piston kit for the shock that is a bit better if you want to go more dirt focused).
@terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff
@terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff 9 ай бұрын
@@williamb.6918 thanks for the detailed observations on those front forks and rear shock. As a road rider these are limitations I would not reach and I would never tax the suspension to the extent others would. I did find a perfect setup for myself on these somewhat rough roads and appreciated the separate rebound and compression adjusters on the rear end. I can tell you that the suspension setup for the road was vastly superior in terms of high speed damping over my 2023 R1250Gs which is a boneshaker on the same roads. A little of an unfair comparison given the GS’s shorter travel but surprising non the less. I have KYB.factory cartridge front forks on my Daytona 1200 and like them a lot with meaningful adjustability that make a real world difference. But that’s 1995 for you! 😁. Cheers 👍.
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 9 ай бұрын
I’d like to think that they’ve ironed that out in the current run of bikes. Sadly i also wouldn’t be surprised if not. I’ve already had to completely dismantle the rear wheel assembly as it was squeaking, only to find that there was practically NO grease in there whatsoever. So the oil seal was rubbing and squeaking on the spacers. Now it’s full of grease and silent, but it really should have been done from the factory! All I’ve noticed so far from the front is that it’s a bit ‚clonky‘ when it’s topping out at the upper end of the travel. But i haven’t tried any real off roading yet. We’ll see!
@williamb.6918
@williamb.6918 9 ай бұрын
They have been radio silent to those of us that have reported the problem and to date I have not heard of a single fork opened up that did not share this problem. With the stock front setup I just was not able to get the feel I was looking for in looser material without removing almost all the preload in the rear to compensate (which should not be something you have to do). I do come from a KTM background and hands down they have the best suspension in this class by a significant margin (I actually bought the Tuareg because my new 1290 was down for an extended period waiting on parts). @@AndyManCam

My boss had a similarly bad dealership experience, albeit involving a used Mercedes van. He took it to the dealership's mechanic who said it was in perfect working order. However, after driving it a bit he felt the brakes were somewhat unresponsive. He then took it to a different mechanic, who found out there was indeed a problem with the brakes involving the ABS unit AND the servo, meaning the thing was a deathtrap that needed 2 grand worth of repairs. It's amazing how unconscientious some people are.

Totally! Astonishing service! I hear you on the power front. But i think for me i won’t be so bothered. The KTM was 25 hp down on the Honda. Didn’t bother me. I then had a week on a Desert X, which was another 25 hp down on the KTM. But that also didn’t phase me. This and the T7 are another 20hp down but also 20-25kg lighter. So i think I’ll be happy. To understand this bike and its potential, im considering going back to Crete in late Sept/beginning of Oct. There were Aprilia Tuaregs for rent there. Crete is a curve paradise. and it also has hundreds of kms of gravel roads. I have tested the Tuareg for 2 hours in an EU city (including some forest riding) and, for me, it was undoubtedly better than the T7. I have jumped on it after a similar 2hrs test with the T7 + I have previously rented Yamaha twice, full days. Once with, once without passenger. Summarizing - Crete for test ground :)

New bikes are ridiculous, for a number of reasons, but price is at the top of the list. Last year I bought an H-D Road King used from a guy and it was outfitted with everything. Only 32K miles and I paid one fifth of the cost for a new one. When people come up to me, they always think it's new. I also bought a '98 Honda VFR800FI last year for a great price with 22K miles, GIVI top box and side cases. The bike is brilliant, so much fun to ride and sounds amazing with the Honda V4. Now, I'm an old guy (67) and work on my own stuff. One problem with some models of older motorcycles is finding parts, the other is finding a mechanic familiar with them.

I wish it were the same here in Germany, but it seems that demand for used bikes is at an all time high and as a result there’s not much difference between new and old. For example an 8 year old Tiger 800 XC with 20,000 km costs the same as a new Tuareg right now. Madness.

@@AndyManCam Alright, i tried. 😄 I actually have a 2015 model myself, but the Xrx street model. Bought it used for 7 grand with 20.000km on board over here in Austria and i figured prices in Germany wouldn't be that far off (expected them to be lower tbh). These things age very well so buying used with some miles on it isn't that big of an issue. Rode one that had 100.000km on it and I barely felt a difference to mine. It could be that it is NOT the fault of the dealer with the wobbly front tire. It is known that some of the first charges of the PIRELLY SCORPION STR tires have balance issues. It’s very likely that the front wheel issue was the front tyre. My T7 has the same issue, but swapped tyres for a trip, the problem went away, put the STR back on and buckled again. So, manufacturing issue. Disappointing that it’s not been sorted with Pirelli yet, but worth noting that OEM tyres are often not the same as the ones you buy. Still a great tyre though

I have to disagree. It wasn’t simply a vibration or a slight wobble. When looking down upon the rotating wheel from above, i could clearly see a 10-20mm side to side deviation at one specific point. A tyre would have to be seriously out of spec to cause that.

i have made the grave mistake of buying a bike with a bent frame, at the time of purchase i didn't even have the license for it so i couldn't test ride it, it was a private sale so all i did was do 2 laps around the lad's back garden on it to make sure it started and stuff, but overall i had no idea what to look for, i was new to bikes, having only ridden a 50cc before that, i had no clue about mechanics and such so i just bought it, only to find out once i was actually able to ride it and going out with some friends, my friend who was riding behind me told me once we stopped that i'm crabbing, at first thought it was the wheel alignment so adjusted the chain and made sure that the back wheel was straight, still nothing, only to take the whole bike apart and see that the frame is curved to the right, so overall, yes, the motorcycle industry today is disgusting, not a word mentioned from the seller as he was just trying to get rid of it, i cannot afford to sell this bike and get another because 1. i can't afford a new bike atm, 2. i wouldn't get any money from selling this bike if i mentioned the bent frame so that's not an option, and 3. i commute 40 miles a day to work so having no transportation is not an option either, so here i am, 1.5 years later still riding the same bent bike, still putting up with it, at this point i'm just waiting to be old enough to pass my A2 license so i can buy a bigger bike and then scrap this one, absolutely shocking that someone would sell a bike in such a state but hey ho, no one actually cares for other people's safety nowadays i suppose.

Sorry mate, that really sucks. I’m pretty sure that here you can sue the seller if they hide that from you. Doesn’t help you much. But for that very reason i only buy bikes from dealerships. Not necessarily because i trust their work, but because they legally have to give me a years warranty!! Good luck getting the license and finally moving on to something you can be happy with mate. 🤞🏻

@AndyManCam thank you very much, even if I could sue the seller its been over a year and a half since I got it so... bit late I think lol

Yeah that’s a real shame. But much like my experience, we learn from these things and hopefully won’t ever make the same mistakes again!

Bikes can be fixed, but bad attitudes from the people who 'potentially' will service your bikes cannot. A huge red flag. As you are a tall unit I wondered if an adventure bike style would be more suited? But appreciate a mute point as you have already made a purchase! I look forward to the next test ride upload.

Absolutely right! But this is an adventure bike. The thing is massive! It’s just got a smaller engine than the supertanker ADV‘s but there’s plenty of space.

Unfortunately some folks on test rides are totally disrespectful of the bike as it is not their property. That said your customer experience was extremely poor and you are right to totally discount that particular dealership. All things considered and objectively speaking BMW motorrad have the best customer service experience. They are happy to give test rides, used bikes are fully serviced with a two year warranty. OK you pay a little more but I can see the value. What about a used 850gs which has likely never been taken off road by its previous owner.....

Yeah of course. But the fact that they knew about this bike yet still sent it out! It’s obvious the mechanic kerbed it on his adventures in Italy and didn’t want the boss to find out! I don’t really fancy it TBH. They’re obviously well made. But just a bit heavy and unexciting in my slanted opinion!

That's the real winner Dave! I'm happy for you mate. I did spend a large chunk of time looking for a used 'Gem' that I could lavish with care and abuse in equal measure. Sadly the prices were exorbitant! (German market plus height of the season). 20 year old XTZ750, 5 grand! 25 year old Suzuki DR800, 3 grand! Madness. Maybe after the next bike deeply disappoints, I'll get rid and buy a project in the winter when it's cheap!! 😅

Crazy how dealerships are!…sorry your experience was bad at one place, surely there is a spot that does care. Anything worthy is hard to find these days.

There has to be a spot that cares! I don’t want to have to choose my bike based on which dealership is the least bad!! 🤦🏻‍♂️
