In this video I provide five, plus a bonus, reasons to purchase an Aprilia Tuareg 660. After spending several miserable, thousands of miles on my Yamaha Tenere 700 I test rode an Aprilia Tuareg 660. This bike blew my mind. I was at the point of questioning whether I wanted to continue to ride or if I was ready to give it up. I discovered it wasn't riding that I was hating, it was the ride. Insert the Aprilia Tuareg 660. This bike changed everything. I enjoyed riding it so much during the test ride I had to have one. Here are all the reasons I purchased this bike.

Owned my T660 18 months, 9000 miles later I still love this bike. It's a weird connection I have with the bike, the bike seems to have a soul and it really brings out the passion to ride. Zero issues, rock solid and a real joy !

I agree with some wired connection. I also have a love affair with this bike, I just want everyone to ride mine when they start asking me about it, I think everyone should have one. I am infatuated with it! I believe both my wife and my new 2023 GL1800 DCT Goldwing are both jealous of the Aprilia. She's a stud!

I test rode Africa Twin, Norden 901, Ducati Desert X, Truimph Tiger 900, T7 then reluctantly the Tuareg last. I didn't get a mile down the road and knew it was for me. Obviously not for everyone but if you have any background in motocross/dual sport it will draw you in quickly.

Glad you joined the club and support Aprilia continuing to grow. I think they deserve to see success with this bike, and would be too bad if sales were lacking just because of lack of dealerships or imagined reliability concerns. This is a case of a brand making a wonderful product that no other brand is making, and if we don’t support them, and buy the compromised bikes of other brands we have only ourselves to blame. Enjoy!

Reliability has not been an issue for Aprilia for years now, since Piaggio took over. Same with Guzzi. The days of Italian electrical issues are long past.

Loved this video. Especially liked hearing how the bike made you feel, which is such an important element to the overall enjoyment of riding. I've been having a hard time deciding on an adventure bike since just about every bike on the market today is good, and the perfect bike just doesn't exist and may never exist. But I think the Tuareg might be the winner. Thanks for sharing. Subbed!

100% I have a KTM 390, had a Norden 901. This bike is way better than both, i LOVE riding the Aprilia. Youre commentary is spot on. Great job of describing this bike. The 660 is the best ADV bike. 2500 miles, zero issues, just loads of fun.

I think this looks like an awsome bike, but a bit unfair to compare it to the 390 adv, as the price tag is 2,5x, at least here in Norway.

Completely agree with you concerning the good feeling riding this bike. Had a T7 before but never really became a friend with the Yamaha for the same reasons you mention. Had a 300 km test ride with the Tuareg and it felt like coming home from the first moment on. Purchased the 2024 edition "Desert Sand" November last year and it's really a pleasure to ride this bike!

I am so happy for you Matt! I was actually just in a massive car crash in which I should have died, walked away with a bruise, a scratch, a sore back and concussion, the driver that hit me died. It brings me back to what I said in your Yamaha video, don't wait, don't have regrets. Looking forward to your experience with it as I might get one as a second bike in a couple of years.

When I sat on it in the showroom I wanted to test ride it. When I test rode it I knew immediately it was coming home with me. As you describe it Matt, it just fits me. I say that it rides smaller than it is. I LOVE mine!!

It’s perhaps best Tuareg 660 review I’ve ever seen. Congratulations! On tracer 900GT right now but thinking of adding something more off road oriented and in my my opinion it represents best value and quality product for the money. Way better than T7 btw.

I tried the 390 adventure, and it was uncomfortable and cramped for me, and i needed cruise control because my right hand locks up after riding more than 30 min. I tried the 890 adventure, but that was cramped and uncomfortable, i didn't like the footpeg and gear shifter position, and handlebars were too low. Then i tried the tuareg, and OMG, did that bike put a smile on my face! The ergonomics fit me really well, and the suspension is firm yet comfortable. I have 5500 miles on my tuareg, and it performed flawlessly on the Idaho BDR, i absolutely love it! And i agree with everything you said about the bike. If the bike doesn't put a smile on your face and ignite that passion to get out for a ride, then you are on the wrong bike. And if something kills your passion, that's no way to go thru life if you have the ability to change it! Wind therapy or throttle therapy does wonders for mental health! Nice to see you on the tuareg!

After two cross country trips and 40,000 miles I sold my BMW GS and bought a Tuareg. To me the Tuareg is like a 7 tenths GS. Same qualities (riding position, smooth power delivery, balance) in a lighter, more manageable package. By far, the best bike I’ve ridden off road. And I had a KTM 690 Enduro! The Tuareg is easier to ride and more comfortable. Absolutely love it!

@JimGoryeb, do you find you miss the much lower weight of the 690? I've got a 690 that's been ADV'd and I'm eyeing the Toureg to replace it but am worried about dealing with another ~100lbs off road...

@@docwyte My 690 was modified with Rally tower and a bunch of ADV upgrades. But it never worked well as an ADV bike. Honestly, I find the Tuareg easier to ride off road. I mostly ride BDR type off road tracks and the suspension on the Tuareg and the more predictable throttle response suits that slower, rocky terrain better than the 690. Even in its softest setting, the 690 would deflect off rocks and was much more difficult for me to control than the Tuareg, despite the weight difference. Now, if I were racing in the desert, I’d choose the 690 every time. But why would I race in the desert??

@@docwyte I didn't have a 690, I had a 390 Adv. I don't ride single track and if the forest roads and jeep trails start getting really difficult I turn around. I don't try to ride really challenging terrain. I enjoyed the dirt road riding on my T7 so I expect I will enjoy it on the AT660 even more since the balance of the weight is much better. For the road riding comfort doing long distances to ride the dirt roads I think the compromise is worth it.

@@JimGoryeb I live in Colorado and when off road am riding the Alpine passes around here. Picking up the 690 is much easier than my friends T7, which weighs the same as the Aprilia. That's really the only thing giving me pause...

I've always ridden small displacement dual sport thumpers since 1975. I bought a BMW G310GS for my 60th birthday to do some ultralight motorcycle adventure camping and it's good for what I do. I like the relatively light weight and ADV comfort with better road manners than my small dual sports. It needs a larger fuel tank and larger engine for the little bit of highway riding that I do. The Tourag 660 might be a better bike for me.

It's worth getting a test ride on this bike. After many years rising a KTM 390 Adventure, and loving it, I really appreciate the better road manners of this bike. I will likely only do light offroad riding, so it fits well. You might find that too.

Matt, I know I'm comparing apples top oranges here. I can tell you I'm confident the reliability is going to be outstanding on that bike. My brother is still rolling on his 2007 Aprilia Factory 50 scooter with over 10,000 miles of screaming the motor. I did one top end on it for him.The quality of fasteners and fitment is as good or better than anything out there. main thing is you are happy and enjoying it. Congratulations my man!!

Right on! I’m on a KLR for about two years and it’s as you expect. I’ve been looking at upgrading and kept coming back to the T7. Until I saw the Tuareg. Man, what a bike. I was at the dealership over the weekend and almost rode away with one. We’re dealing with some life events that are affecting our finances, but once that’s resolved I will definitely be heading back to pick up the Aprilia. Till then, I’m excited to watch your journey and live vicariously through your channel. Thanks!

I had to sort out some finances myself. I really thing between the T7 and the Tuareg money is better spent on the Tuareg. It is a better bike in every way. Lots of content to come. Hope it works out for you. It will be hard for you to get off the bike if you get one. Cheers.

ADV Matt- On point. I cannot overemphasize the excellence of the ergonomics on this bike. The frame/front end geometry and the weight distribution. People don't realize the "fuel tank" that you look at is really the air box. The fuel sits down low at seat level. This makes the bike more fun to ride for an average rider like me. Why? I dump the bike less!!! I feel more confident, I relax and dont stress about a more difficult section so much, and I can let the bike take me through a tough section. I understand dealership availability and "reliability" reputation of Italian products makes some reject any consideration of the T660. . I also know this.....the Italians just have a certain approach to design refinement that is truly wonderful. I love Japanese bikes and their approach to excellence. An Italian bike is different. It just is. For people to just write these bikes off based on, yes some past not so perfect Aprillia history that the Aprillia team has worked hard to correct, but grossly inflated by internet keyboard jockeys, is really their own loss. The irony is that the KLR has this legend reputation as some bullet proof cant go wrong basic bike. My KLR had WAY more issues that my T660, which has been stellar for 5k miles. And those miles include several miles each way of 4 x 4 dirt road to and from my house and then hard twisties so not easy miles. In addition, the KLR is just an ergonomic piece of shit. It is so out of whack geometry wise its just too much work to ride it on anything but the most basic track. So much for internet stereotypes. FYI on the heat that radiates from the cat that people complain about- I wear over the shin high top heavy moto boots and old school tuck in the boot leather moto pants. I dont really feel the heat. A few days ago I rode in jeans and I was surprised at how much I felt the heat. Something to think about. FYI- my opinion is old school leather moto pants are far superior to textile. Its rare that I dont ride alone, but when I am with other guys on summer rides they always ask if I'm too hot. No I'm not. Leather breathes really well. It also is much better in the cold.

Glad you found the right bike for you Matt. A bike may get tons of great reviews on KZbin and Magazines, but in the end its you that has to like the bike and how it feels. I'm kinda that way with the 390 Adv. There are days I like how it feels and there are days I dislike it. I am pretty sure I'll will be moving it on this year. Anyway thanks for all your KTM 390 Adventure videos and wish you all the best with your new Tuareg 660. I hope the KTM 390 guys stick around and not unsubscribe because you went with a different bike. Your videos are always great 🙂 P.S. Does this mean Frank is going to buy one too! Hahaha

Congrats Matt! So glad you were able to get one for a good deal! I still prefer my 390A but compared to the T7, I liked the T660 for every single reason. I only had it for two weeks but gave it a nice workout. I have ridden all versions of the T7, modified suspension and what not, but the bone stock Tuareg was way superior in every way for me. I can see why people like it. Personally, I wish it was about 40-50lbs lighter but even with that extra weight, its such a hoot to ride! Hey Matt I had the 22 KLR. Decent off road. Not so much on the road. After watching Ian at Big Rock Moto I got the Tuareg. One of the best bikes I’ve owned. Having the fuel lower on the bike adds to the bikes balance. Power and torque is great. The suspension is awesome. We just did the White Rim Trail and the Tuareg did great. You mentioned reliability questions. I’ve had mine just over a year and put 5,000 pretty hard miles on it and have not had any issues. The fuel gauge did need replaced but that was a known warranty issue and was addressed quickly. You may want to upgrade that stock paper filter with a UNI foam from Australia. Nice upgrade and easily serviced. Glad you’re happier with the Aprilia !

I have already purchased the Uni filter, pivot bolts and steel shift lever. Need to add a bit of protection and we will be ready for extreme adventures. It's so good to hear from actual riders of this bike. Thanks.

I know what you mean about having a bike that feels like it was made for you. I had that with a BMW Funduro (actually designed by Aprilia) that was a joy to rode. I was considering the Taureg but bought the 390A for cost reasons. I had that meh feeling riding it home but Im liking it more. I wouldnt be surprised if i move up to Tuareg after time. I look forward to your comparison of the two bikes. And congrats again on finding a great bike for you.

Thanks. I spent a lot of time on the 390. Once you get modified to fit you it will come alive and provide with 1000s of great miles.

Enjoy the Taureg! After riding a VStrom 650 for 15 yrs , I purchased a T660 this past Jan. I found the VStrom to be a safe, reliable ride, but not very interesting. By contrast, the T660 is an extremely fun bike to ride. Although I’ve had absolutely no reliability issues with the T660, I don’t expect it to be as reliable as my VStrom and I’m OK with that. If a bike isn’t fun to ride then you won’t ride it, even if it’s very reliable. Looking forward to watching your videos!

I was in need of change. I forgot just how strong the winds are out west. The 390 can struggle in those. The heavier bike and more HP really spoke to me. My rising had changed a lot too. I get one week a month to go as far as I can. I needed something more comfortable for really long days. The 390 is still a great bike.

Honestly, I wouldn't know how I would feel about the Tuareg but the feeling your describing is how I feel on my 2023 KLR for the way I ride currently. I am not considering anything else for the next 3-5 years most likely. The one bike I did hate riding pretty much in the first mile or so of a test ride was a low mile used T7. I know there are definitely great things about the motor, but it just wasn't inspiring or comfortable enough for me. I completely understand where you are coming from. Everything is subjective and fit is fairly specific to each individual. There isn't really a true one size fits all ADV bike out there. Maybe the least popular or least "fancy" bike will be the one that speaks to you. Actually, I really like the Himalayan, but I just wanted a little more oomph that I found in the KLR. I will say the Tuareg is a strong contender for my next bike simply based on the "nice to have" features it has for the price.

It has some great "nice to have" features at a very competitive price. I have already really taken advantage of the cruise control. It is so comfortable to ride. The feel of a bike is very subjective, and the way we ride changes with time. Get a bike that fits you is a great first step to a great riding experience.

The Transalp didn't quite cut it. The Tuareg ticks more boxes than any other bike in its class and price range.

Wanted one since they first came out, want one even more now... It's so difficult to describe why we connect with a bike but it's such a powerful sensation when we do... On the reliability front, done 30k miles on various Aprilias and not been let down - I could be just lucky mind 😅

If you are going to install hand guards look at HDB. I installed them on my Tuareg and really am impressed. Best!

@@advmattThe HDBs are more than worth it. They can take a hit like nothing else. I put them on all my bikes now (1090, 890 Rally, 1290 SAR, Tuareg 660). They cost more, but you get what you are paying for.

Grats on the new ride Matt! I just picked up my 24 black one yesterday! Questions for ya: Is that the large tusk bag, and if so, how did you get it to fit?? I have one on my old bike and played around for a sec and it seemed too big... do you have the front of the bag sitting behind the gas cap? Does it get in your way at all? I was eyballing the Mosko Gnome bag but it seems such a small bag for such a big price!! Haha -thanks man

I have the largest Tusk Olympus bag. The gas cap sits under the bag. The front of the bag sits almost even with the front of the tank. It's pulled down in the back a little but fits well. It's not in my way.

I bought one in late 2022 and have really enjoyed riding it over many differing sets of terrain ever since. The Tenere for me was just not a comfortable motorcycle to ride, whereas the Tuareg 660 is the golden ticket! To be honest, the ability to blast through the countryside with the awesome soundtrack is worth the purchase price alone! If I could add, Buy yourself a GIVI rear rack / rear carrier mount. Do not buy anything else as only the GIVI one gives you an excellent rear hand hold in "Just" to right place to be able to move the bike around with ease. I'm guessing the GIVI and Aprilia have some technical exchange tie up as the GIVI rear rack , fits like an Aprilia Part.

Thanks for the suggestion, I actually went with the Perun Moto rear rack. Video coming. Once the bike is fitted with luggage I will have lots of places to grab it. I didnget the Givi crash bars. I prefer their design.

Congratulations on the new 660 Matt. I’ll be curious to see how it does in the long run. It sure checks off all the boxes the Japanese blatantly refuse to give us in a bike. It frustrates me to no end. Personally I was thrilled to get back on a T700 after selling mine last year. Fuel range on T700 is stupid but 6. Gallon tanks are $300, tubeless is another issue on the T700 but for $900 I can get a rear tubeless wheel so I’m good with that. I have a gen 1 klr that I dearly love but it is heavily modded with different front end. They are funky but it clicked with me. We are all different, cheers.

Congrats! I’m jealous! Maybe after this riding season, I will trade my f800 in for a Tuareg, it seems like really great value. I understand what you mean by the ‘feels’, this seems like a major appeal of the Aprilia, I’m scared of going for a test ride as I may just bite the bullet and buy one right then and there.

Be careful, a test ride will make you question everything.... I had an F800GS, after the newness wore off so did my interest in it. The AT660 is a whole different animal, really a thoroughbred race horse, more accurately.

I have not dropped the bike yet and I have almost 100 miles out of the 640 on it on dirt roads. Its not all loaded up with gear so its pretty nimble. Its truly and enjoyable ride. Nothing better than a hot Italian to get the blood boiling!

Good choice Matt, don't listen to AT660 haters, enjoy it. I have '22 model, same color as yours, love it! My reasons was almost exactly the same as yours, it just tick all the boxes. There are some issues, but nothing major. I'm guessing you'll be servicing this bike? 6hour ride to nearest dealer is no joke. I have like 5 miles 😅

I don’t understand those „haters“ As no one of them gives a penny to what someone rides it’s up to the owner to have fun and love the bike! I‘m riding one of the most hated bikes - GS ac from 2010 and 112t km on the clock. Still love it so much ❤ I tested the AT 660 for 3 days and wanted to do the same with the YT7. Returned that after the first day. Way too overrated in my opinion. Despite 20kg less weight it feels like 20 kg heavier than my GS. And by far not as nimble as the T660. Tested also the N901 exp and KTM 890. Not my piece of cake. The only possible replacement for my GS is the AT660!! In my opinion the best ADV-bike on the market😊 Cheers

How have you found the engine/exhaust heat? I was quite surprised by how hot this bike was when I test road it a few weeks ago. It was pretty uncomfortable on a warm autumn day here in Queensland, Australia.

I found the heat from it to be very similar to my T7. I haven't ridden in really hot conditions yet, but so far it has not been a problem for me.

Interested to hear your impression on it vs. the 390 for solo offroad travel. I used to have a Tuono 1100 and wouldn't mind picking up a T660, but a bit concerned with the extra weight offroad since I typically travel solo as well.

Price, despite as good as all the features it comes with, for me can’t make up for the extra weight, lack of USA wide dealerships, readily available parts / 3rd party accessories / mods of the current KTM 390 Adventure MCs price, whether new or used. For me the current KTM 390 Adv is a case of “less being more” bang for the buck.

I agree, but I have found lots of aftermarket accessories. It's pretty easy to get parts online to do work myself. The KTM 390 Adventure, especially the newer ones with the improved electronics are great bikes for sure. Lot of value for the money. If only a few more ponies to cut through the wind out west, a little suspension and 21/18 wheels and it would be the ultimate bike. Oh wait, that one is coming in 2025, hopefully.

You can get it serviced anywhere as long as you keep records (you can actually do the service yourself if you wish as well). The manufacturer cannot legally refuse warranty service based on whether or not you use your local dealership for service.

@@williamb.6918 correct. It’s called the magnuson-moss warranty act. My experience is based on calling every independent and dealership within 150 miles of my home, there approximately 6 of them, and the price ranged from $1800-$2400 regardless of being independent or not. As someone who rides the 12k valves adjustment in a year, it is a lot of down time and expense.

@@j-Photography I have an independent who generally has quite a bit more experience vs the dealership wrenches and typically runs about half what the Aprilia dealership charges for everything I have had done (I also trust him a lot more). A valve adjustment is typically a couple hour job so a good wrench should able to turn it around in a few hours. There is no good reason adjusting 8 valves should cost $2000. Granted this does need to happen twice as often as some competing bikes in the category so costs do add up. It would be nice to see a healthy bump for the valve adjustment interval when they release a VVT motor with this platform.

@@williamb.6918 Having a good independent is awesome. Sadly, none around here. Plenty of dealers though. I was quoted $350 for the 6k services and average of $2,000 for the 12k valve service. Approximately $2,400 every 12k miles is insane to me, and I coke from the world of Ducati and BMW. Lol Local dealers also told me the exhaust valve shim is a special shim only available through Aprilia, so something to keep in kind for your service person. Enjoy the bike, it’s a good one!

I hear you. I plan to do the services myself. I can at least pop the valve cover off and check they are in spec. If the valves are out of spec I can it myself or take it in at that point. The modern bikes I have ridden have not needed adjustment, so a check should do it.

I wouldn't say out grown as much as I would say my riding needs and plans have changed. I get one week a month tobride as far as I can the 390 is just not as comfortable. It also doesn't handle the wind as well out here in the south west. I wanted a little heavier bike for better road manners and more horsepower to cut through the wind. The cruise control makes those 500 mile days easier too.

We all have our preferences. For me is the compression ratio. I cant really get over those high numbers. That is why I cant get a ktm, aprilia, etc. If I cant really keep a motorcycle that would probably not make it up to 100k km, it gets hard for me to buy it.

I understand. I also looked at the compression ratio. I think modern motorcycles are capable of that kind of mileage, unlike older bikes. The biggest issue I see is trying to ride in countries with low octane. Then it really becomes a problem. I do see your point.

@@advmatt actually I believe is the other way around. The older motorcycles have lower compression ratio, that means less stress on the engine components. They will last much more than the new ones. The higher the compression ratio is, the more heat and stress the engine get, and less longevity. This is how they manage to get those "low" cc engines with high HP. The fuel quality is not the biggest issue for me :)

@@MMRF87 I agree with you on the lower compression engines lasting forever. There were older high compression engines that melted down over time. Newer engines seem to have better heat management but time and lots of miles will tell. It's always a safe bet to go with a lower compression engine.

Live in Japan. Summers sits around 100f humid and higher. How is engine heat for you so far? My head says Transalp (we have the 91hp full fat) heart says aprilia, but I commute 5 days a week and ride 1 for fun. I could add cruise, suspension and make tubeless to the Transalp. I’m a former mechanic

The heat hasn't bothered me, but I am not sitting traffic. For the money the Tuareg is the better buy. I don't mind the heat, lots of bikes heat up the riders. Thos one does some but not as bad as other bikes I ridden.

i also felt the same about the yamaha t7 also for the anvil like reliability but damn it was just not exciting at all by any measure , i tried hard to talk myself into it anyway and just modify the poop out of it but just couldnt , bought a husky 901 instead & set it up for me , 13500miles on now 🤞🤞

Nice, the 901 is a great bike. I really resisted dumping a ton of money into the T7. I didn't think it would get it where I wanted. I am glad I didn't given the sudden change. I will keep it around for a bit while I transition to the 660. You are riding the wheels of your 901. Good for you!

Turns out I was completely wrong. I plan to share later, but what I was observing appeared to be an oil leak. Turned out the chain was so over lubed from factory and when it heated up it started dripping on the ground. I had not seen that before. The chain was cleaned and relubed, no issues.

I thought you bought a Volkswagen when you called it a Touareg. It's pronounced Twārəg (Twah-reg). Touareg and Tuareg are both the names of the large Berber ethnic group that principally inhabit the Sahara. Whilst both names mean the same thing in the car/bike world they are totally different. the tuareg has 12kmiles valveinspection interval and the tenere 24kmiles which is a big distvantage of the aprilia.Nowadays valveinspection on a modern bike ist a real pita with all the stuff in the way till you get to the valvecover!

Agreed, the service intervals ate not as good as the T7. For me, the trade off is worth it to ride a bike that really gets me excited. My R1200GS had the same service interval.

The T7 is likely the first to go but I have some other life things going on where I might be leaving a bike somewhere else in the country to ride when I am there every month. I have so many video ideas and so little time. Its too bad you don't have a dealer closer. These bikes are amazing.

This is typical offroad bike. No fun on the road because of high position and no win protection and diving terribly when you brake. I do not like ugly, poor quality disply, the key stuck in the ignition, too noisy exhaust, emits so much heat... I do not get all these "wow"
