Andrew Clubb AKA Clubby, Editor of Australian Adventure Bike Magazine attends the Australian Aprilia Tuareg 660 launch in the home of the sandy trails, Mildura.
The bike impressed Clubby, firstly at a fundamental level with excellent dirt and road handling, comfort and power. Other strong features include, excellent traction control electronics that can be activated on the fly, tubeless tyres, full adjustable high quality suspension and big fuel range, in excess of 400 ks.
We then spend time with John Hansen, the Technical Manager for Aprilia Australia to discuss the finer points of the features of the bike.
We look forward to spending a longer time on this bike and taking it for a decent adventure.

You should move away from the desert where you record the videos and try a true desert, like the Australian outback. It would be nice to see if a ktm can survive that. :) Most people take the suzuki dr650 there.

So we bought this bike for my wife earlier this year (it's been available in Europe for a while). There's a little hiccup at around 4k rpm's which I hope they will solve from the factory (and if not then we'll get the Garbo map). There was also a slight oil leak at the weep hole which has been widely reported (and really shouldn't happen in 2022) but the dealer has taken care of it promptly. Other than this it's been absolutely fantastic. The suspension is great, it has great usable power, the electronics are effortless to use (the 1100 ATAS is so absolutely TERRIBLE here, Aprilia has really nailed it). On my side I have a Desert X coming in a couple of months, I sat on one and it's quite a bit taller than the Tuareg (and feels a bit more heavy, but that comparison is only made standing still since I didn't ride the DX) but I just can't get past those looks. I think the Tuareg would be the better choice for hardcore off-road but the DX looks so stunning I had to have it. We're coming off the 1250 GS and 1100 ATAS which we had fully kitted out with LoneRider and Mosko side bags, crash bars etc. With all this both the GS and ATAS were 300 kg+ fully loaded. We've sold it all and bought a Kriega OS base and their soft bags and the weight difference is amazing. The LoneRider and Mosko EMPTY bags (and the racks to hold them) were ~15 kg. In comparison the Kriega setup is around 3 kg. So with the above in mind I calculated the Tuareg fully loaded to be at around 230 kg and the DX at around 250 kg (including crash bars). That's a giant weight difference. There's no comparison at all when it comes to handling between the Tuareg and the GS/ATAS fully loaded. On the highway the big adventure bikes are of course quite a bit better, but anything other than that use case I find the increased agility and lower weight of the Tuareg supremely more enjoyable than the extra power of the big bikes. If I had to describe the bike in one word it would be BLISS. :)

I won't trade my Tenere in for a Tuareg, but I've compared them on paper Tuareg has tubeless tires, lower seat hight but still same ground clearance, same wet weight but 2L more in the fuel tank, more elektronics. I think it's a great bike!

Yes, great bike, on road and especially dirt. I've got 2,800 kms, suspension is impressive and more than enough for my abilities as is the motor - give it a good thrashing Cubby loves >5k rpm 😜 Electronics are a big plus for me and playing around with varying throttle, engine braking, traction and ABS levels on different surfaces is part of the fun! Now with full Arrow cat-less system and Gabro Upmap to smooth the fueling since. Lovin' it.

I have one and I love it, have had it like 4ish months?? Taking it slow, made sure the break-in was proper, having some QC issues and it's sitting while I wait for parts. I did drop it once around 1100 miles in due to someone speeding down a road I was merging onto. It sucked but I'm kinda glad I got it out of the way, need crash bars! I am just surprised I could pick it up, it took everything I had but I was annoyed as hell and that helped. Anyway, it's the most entertaining bike I've ridden and I hope to keep it forever!

@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV I tested Tuareg660, DesertX, Norden901, Tenere700, AfricaTwin1100. DesertX was my best for off-road, engine, handling. But price is ridiculously high, and the Tuareg was real close in performance, and better than other 3. Norden is roadster disguised in adventure bike, Africa is an elephant (I had one for 45.000km), T7 is slightly behind Tuareg for my taste. I may sell my 701 to buy a Tuareg, while adventurising my KTM500EXCF.

My experience with the bike has been positive. It gets great mileage, seat height is good for a 30" inseam, and it is really planted on the road. Very balanced bike. Not a fan of the look - prefer a stripped-down bike but it's so comfortable I can forgive all the plastics. I came from a WR250R and prefer simple, but this Tuareg is spoiling me - and I don't have to carry a tube.

Looking forward like so many to your more in-depth ride. The only downside for me in the lower US is the dealership paucity - just nowhere to buy or service w/o traveling 100's of miles dang-it, as you mentioned I think.By the way, I just soooo much trust your opinions knowing how hard you all ride, and the fair and even shake you give everything you run. I held off even considering the Tuareg until the release of the new Transalp and the new VStrom. Don't know why I even bothered really! The Tuareg has it all over the other two especially considering neither have cruise control or , in the case of the Transalp, adjustable suspension! The other thing that amazes me about this bike is that, even though it has long suspenders back and front and really good ground clearance, the seat height is a modest 860mm!! I have always bought Japanese and feared anything European simply because of reliability issues - rightly or wrongly. But now, shopping for a new bike after selling my F800GSA, the Tuareg is right at the pointy end of the list.

Seat a bit narrow but very positive comments for somewhat local travel with in country not RTW, just not enough dearlers as we know off. But great machine, motor dead smooth at 100mph, no vibration. I would question your comment on this bike being Aprilia 'first atttempt at dirt orientated adventure' as I had one of the Aprilia Tuareg 600 Wind in the 80s, it had the Rotax single engine. Even the colour scheme (not the same patterning) of the bike you had there was based on the original scheme, even the tank shape and twin headlight fairing, Brembo brakes, USD forks etc. There were other CC capacity sizes of the same style bike, 125/350. Some even competed in the Dakar Rally. I also had the original Honda Africa Twin 650 with the HRC logo at the same time, it was imported new from Germany to the UK as Honda UK never officially imported that model. Bear in mind one of the FB Groups is more or less dedicated to problems and suggetions with this bike , and there are many issues, so many I have held back from purchasing one so far, my original 600 model never let me down but it was a Rotax engine !

You can find them at prices near the rarely available 300L Rally. 690s and 701s are hard to come by too now and, while they are great bikes, they are a compromise between the twins and the light 450s and 500s. Sorry to disagree but I don't think the Pegaso is a reworked xt660 unless I'm missing something.Mate has one about a 2000 model, it is the same as the GS 650 BMW (Built for BMW by Aprilia) which would be a stretch to call it an adventure bike .Did they have another Pegaso as well, just curious.

I rode the bike a few weeks ago. Something I have not heard any tester comment on is how god-awful slow the bike is. I did ride my Africa twin to the dealership to write it, so that may have had something to do with it. However it did seem exceptionally slow for an 82 horsepower bike. Perhaps the one I rode being brand new is in some sort of limp mode?

Apart from making youtube videos I spent 7 years of my life studying statistics and applying it in my work place for 38 years. So we take one sample of oil from one bike from each brand and we draw conclusions. That's just dumb. It doesn't matter how accurate and technical the process for measurement, the methodology by which conclusions are drawn is misleading to the point of reckless. Basically, "We found crap oil in this bike, therefore all of the thousands of bikes made from that manufacturer are crap." It's interesting that in the heading Fortnine say something about it pissing off manufacturers. It would piss me off as a manufacturer because of it's potential to mislead and recklessly destroy brand. I'm frankly surprised went about this in this way.
