With that shallow trench, you might consider putting the PEX in PVC pipe to keep errant shovels from cutting the PEX lines. Retrofit a guard by cutting a piece of pipe lengthwise.

You should cover the vertical pex lines coming from the house with painted PVC, or something to protect them UV and a string trimmer.

Are you not concerned about UV exposure to the PEX?
@tomtillman Жыл бұрын
Yeh, it will break for sure. I had some exposed pex, and after about a year, stepping on it caused it to give me an unscheduled shower.
@scottwillis54343 жыл бұрын
Really want UV protection for the PEX, and where I live it seems better to have thick insulation for freeze protection, perhaps heat tape (does that work for PEX? Maybe on an outer galvanized protector?). I'd go deeper with the trench and put cheap concrete paver blocks and surveyor's tape over the pipes. First person doing e.g. landscaping who chunks their shovel into the ground...

Another comment in the UV parade. A couple of years ago I replaced my pipes with PEX from the meter to the house, switched to iron pipe where I came out of the ground and into the house then switched back to PEX inside the house. Outdoor utility sink got plumbed with iron pipe then went back underground and switched back to PEX for the backyard, hose bibs came above ground with iron pipe. I've got no UV worries. I think just a box (maybe galvanized steel?) would enough to protect your exposed PEX. UV is the only drawback I know of with PEX. Wish I had seen your PEX crimping tips 2 years ago, would have used a lot less profanity. Jim Y

I see a tiny problem. To drain the lines, you turn off the water underneath the sink, open the drain valves and turn on the shower. This will drain the lines going to the shower, but not the lines coming from the inside. You need to install valves inside the sink vanity to let air into those lines for drainage.
@joonasfi3 жыл бұрын
I think she can drain the line coming from house by opening the master bathroom faucet after shutting off master lines in house for cold and hot lines?
@paulkolodner24453 жыл бұрын
@@joonasfi That should work, but I would prefer to do it all from the bathroom vanity and not involve the rest of the house.
@acemannotsomeother3 жыл бұрын
@@joonasfi the shot off valves are not arranged as you think. The house supply would have to be off to vent from the sink. A better solution would be a extra valve in the shower branch that could be used to blow air through the lines.

@LarsSveen3 жыл бұрын
I could be wrong, but I think pex will degrade when exposed to sunlight for long periods. I live in CA and some of my plumbing and my water heater are outside under a covered porch. I had a contractor replace a broken line and I asked about having pex installed because I thought it might be cheaper and faster. He said since it was exposed to UV, pex couldn't be used, so we went with copper instead (original pipes are iron). Maybe that's pex-a or something? Anyway, something to think about.
@compubyte20102 жыл бұрын
YOU are correct, and it does NOT take a LONG time to destroy the Pex Tubing.. IT can be used Outside, Just needs to ALWAYS be covered from UV and Sunlight !!

No love for PEX A, huh? PEX B is what you’re using (uses the crimp-type fittings). PEX A uses expansion fittings and is supposed to be even slightly better than PEX B at freeze resiliency. Either way, as others said, PEX degrades with UV, so it should be covered there above ground. Running the PEX bare below grade also makes me pretty nervous, so I’d recommend others consider additional protection for the PEX if running it below grade like this. I also think part of what makes PEX great is that you don’t need to do so many fittings which introduce bottlenecks and also (more importantly) opportunities for leaks. While 90 degree corners and vertical/horizontal runs like you did under the sink look nice, it creates more effort and introduces unnecessary failure points 🤷♂️
@KevinNichols2223 жыл бұрын
I use Pex A...and the UV rating on for it is even less than Pex B. :). I've even used it as the main 3/4" water supply line from the meter, but I sleeve it in 2" PVC. If the supply line ever needed to be replaced, it could be slid into the 2" PVC without digging.
