I used Ondura on a pole barn roof 15 years ago. It's quick and easy. I, and my children installed it. The roof has survived a few tropical storms and many nor'easters. The finish is breaking-down now and I'm not sure I'll bother painting it. It looks appropriate for an out-building. Driving the screws correctly is very important, as is facing the overlap away from prevailing winds. My prevailing winds are from the southwest, but my storm winds are from the northeast, so I faced the overlap to the west. They're starting to curl-up a bit. The foam inserts are not optional if you live where there are birds or wasps.

I was pleasantly surprised by your use of the Omdurman shingle roofing product. I covered our out building (aka barn) with the same material 20+ years ago. It still looks great. Love the aerial images of your progress. Thanks for sharing this video. Looking forward to part 4. Until then, make today great. Cheers,

I reroofed my garage with Ondura 18 years ago and it will probably be the last roof the garage ever needs, at least in my lifetime. I too was roofing before a storm, I think it is a rule that it must storm while roofing. The one down side to Ondura is that when it gets wet it is slicker than cat snot. So if it rains just a touch it becomes an inclined skating rink.

While installing roll insulation in a wall cavity once, using an impact / hammer stapler, I sunk a 3/8"staple into my left index finger right across the joint of the first knuckle locking the tip of my finger to the second knuckle. Sunk it right flush, straight into bone. Oh yea! I was wearing a leather glove. Not one of my more proud moments. I had to use a pair of side cutters to pull the staple out. That seemed to hurt more. I'm glad the staple did not break off while being pulled. That is something you should never have to experience and if you do only once. I think about it every time I drive by that home. It has been over twenty years ago now. Take Care and God Bless

We've done a composite deck that goes down to a patio with a pavilion with a steel roof. The inner portion is lined with cedar planks and we have a solar powered light. It's fantastic having the shade and feels special. Nobody has one other than us and the parks and some neighbor kids thought our yard was a park! This project looks great.

Nice work, April. I installed a roof like that about 20 years ago. The corrugations were quite easily ruined by focusing too much weight in any one spot. I noticed that you had a couple of extra pieces dispersing your weight over a larger area. Very smart!

Awesome work! And I loved the way you secured the chimney area to prevent leaks, any additional layer counts. I was one of the early adopters of the Onduline tech in Brazil and it has only benefits in my opinion. The only think to keep an eye on it are hail storms after heat waves. I had one once, it was a week with temperatures around and above 110 and then a hail storm came from nowhere, hitting the softened sheets and punching holes on it like it was paper. After that I added an additional layer of sheets over the damaged ones to add strength, which proved right two years later when same scenario happened.

Nice build April. I'm curious about the purlins though. You explain that the underlayment is in case any water breaches the corrugated roof which is correct. The purlins installed horizontally will now trap the water. Surely the purlins in contact with the underlayment should be vertical 1" x 2" to let any water run off the roof. Then install another 1" x 2" horizontally on top to allow the roof panels to fix to. This also would allow increased air flow.

April, I have seen the cricket detail for roof penetrations, but in the case of most fireplaces never understood why the chimney couldn't be twisted 45* and then just flashed. Especially with a round, drop in fireplace vent dropped into it. Gonna be awesome when the first BBQ is ready to serve! I can already smell it here in Dallas! FR

So if water gets past the roofing top "shingles", the synthetic material will help protect the T1-11. But with those purlins running horizontally how can it escape? Won't it just collect? Or did you add weep holes not seen in the video?
@ewdtrey
@ewdtrey 3 жыл бұрын
Those purlins should be installed vertically or diagonally and with gaps at joints. However, typically purlins are installed horizontally because they are made to go directly on the rafters.
@DebrouillecoEN
@DebrouillecoEN 3 жыл бұрын
Not sure about U.S., but here (in France), the recommended way is to have a first row of vertical battens right on top of the rafter to increase the air gap and leave a direct water escape route and then add the roof battens/purlins horizontally to support shingles.

Sooo, one comment is that to aid in under roof airflow to help prevent heat buildup, you might have wanted to leave gaps in your horizontal "purlins" to allow air to move up the pitch ... and put vents in your soffit (or in this case maybe in the T111 sheathing), and at the ridge. As the roof heats up the air in the gap it can escape at the ridge while cooler air enters at the soffit keeping the roof and the space below cooler. ... It may be, with your roofing material, the corrugation provides that airflow, but higher volume = cooler roof. Beautiful finished job.
