APRS was developed by Bob Bruninga of Glenn Burnie, MD. His call is WB4APR. He named his software, after his call, APRS. I know this because I spoke with him personally on the phone, shortly after he designed the program. It was never called, "automatic position reporting system", or "automatic packet reporting system" or anything else. In fact, he said to me, "I don't know who made that up, but it's simply the last three letters of my call and I stuck an S on the end.

I watched this video not expecting to find an answer, I have had my 878 for a year or so and digital APRS has not worked for most of the time, strangely enough it originally did when I set the radio up but I seemed to kill it somehow, didn't worry too much since the GPS rarely gets a position lock in the house anyway. The CPS software (1.16 firmware) has changed subtley and things have moved, the clue was APRS report channel in the RF channel settings. All working again now, I look forward to breaking it again soon! It was your video that got it cracked although the CPS is slightly different.73

Hi Dave. Excellent comprehensive video. Just a comment about sending APRS on DMR. Not every DMR repeater will accept APRS. TG 310999 has to be turned on by the repeater operator. My experience in the NYC metro area is that none of them allow it as it ties up the time slot, so they have turned it off. Having said that, it goes over my hot spot without a problem and the local 144.390 APRS frequency works well.

Decimal degrees has been the ISO standard and the highest precision format. But in the US, navigators still use DDD.MM.SS format, and that is the presumed default here. Mixing formats can lead to big errors, unless you've got a magic server converting and correcting them, FWIW. Maybe Brandmeister is doing that too?

Analog APRS is 144.390 Vhf only. DMR APRS is whatever frequency your local repeater is on. and not universal. Satalite / space station has it's own I think its 144.850 but not sure. As far as I know the dmr aprs is only for position reports and goes through the repeater to aprs fi. The analog aprs is more fully functional for email and winlink messages but I could be wrong. The newest thing with aprs will be using dtmf tones to send messages up to the space aprs and they are converted to speech and sent back down to earth and can be accessible anywhere on earth. Not sure if it's operational yet but cant wait. AA4CP Chuck Port Salerno FL

Presently, I have a hotspot channel for TAC 310 and a York repeater channel for TAC 310 when I am near that repeater. I was just researching this as well and yes, in simplex mode. Just setup both radios like they are talking to a hotspot at home but with different radio IDs - and I think that will work.

David, Service Set Identification Network standard for 802.11. In IEEE 802.11 wireless local area networking standards, a service set is a group of wireless network devices that are operating with the same networking parameters. I have a gamer HP laptop. I hope your experience is better than mine. It is slow on boot up. POST takes nearly 35 seconds, then I can sign in, then I wait another 30 seconds for boot up to my desktop. I have a very annoying feature with the keyboard. I have to slow down when typing because several keys have a characteristic that when pressed too many time in succession give a result not intended. Some keys if pressed too rapidly make windows suddenly open, or change to another browser window. The right shift key has to be released for each character that I want to type in uppercase. If I depress the right shift key, hold it to type 2 characters only the first character is displayed in uppercase. This keyboard is not setup for a two handed typist. I enjoyed your video. It enlightened me how DMR works. It has been more than one year since I've opened a program for OS that permits me to use APRS so I am not familiar if there are any similarities to the MS Windows program you are using for APRS. I use Xastir. I used a dedicated HT for my Xastir station, a Kenwood TH215. I previously used it for packet with a Commodore 64C computer, a kit built, Digicom64 modem, and German produced software for the Digicom64. Five watts output was more than enough power back in the 80's. Now with not as packet stations running full time more power and probably a higher antenna would be required to cover a greater distance to find a station for a hop. I feel that the EDT reference was for me. Thanks, I need a reminder. 73 de KB8AMZ

This video needs an update since we are at CPS 1.16. For instance, one quirk in the CPS setup in in the analog "PATH" setting. I've found that any spaces or punctuation marks will not work. For example: WIDE1-1 WIDE2-1 will not work. Likewise, WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 will not work. However, WIDE1-1WIDE2-1 will work. This is why many folks who use the 878 use WIDE2-2 to get it to work. Otherwise, nice and informative video. AE7MU

SSID is the network name (with WIFI it's the name of the router you connect to) Do you know how to set up a master server for DMR? I'm looking to set up a closed private communications network that I can use when our venue has outdoor events in town, and I want to enable technicians, security and red cross to reliably and securely communicate over that network. Since I'm in the Netherlands, the use of frequencies is different from the US. I'm aware of what I can and can not do, and I tend to use a free DMR446 channel for my setup (this is allowed even without license) of lease a VHF frequency for this purpose. The problem I have is that there's a TON of information out there on how to set up a radio to work with existing repeaters, and even a lot of information on how to build and configure an access point. The information I can't seem to find though is how to set up a private master server that I can use on a closed network, completely disconnected from the internet. Our venue is completely subsidized and we only have volunteers (me included) so buying a professional setup is not an option. Can you (or anyone else reading this) help me with information on software to use, settings to take note of etc. to accomplish this? I'd really appreciate the information!

I'm afraid I can't be of much help. You can look at the Brandmeister website and see what their infrastructure looks like, as their backbone servers are essentially what you're looking for. Good luck!

I understand that many Brandmeister repeaters limit the private call to parrot only, so there is no way to send a private call to 3109999. I have an MD-380 without GPS, but I have been able to send email and texts to my cell phone (to call signs of EMAIL2 and SMSGTE respectively) when using my hotspot (which allows private calls) but no to the local Brandmeister repeater (Cary, NC). Also, is there any way to send "freehand" text (i.e. not the single script in the CPS) on the digital APRS on the Anytone 878? I assume not, at least for now. I am most intrigued with APRS's ability to send emails and SMS texts, it would seem useful if you ever had a local internet/cell phone outage as a way to communicate with non-hams (assuming of course there were enough hops in the network to get to an area with working internet). I have been able to do this with APRSdroid and a Baefong HT with the APRS cable. It would be nice if the Anytone 878 could do this as well, I'm on the fence for purchasing one. Dave KW4QY

I don't know yet. You could create a "canned" message and send that.
@bohicaniac

@@davecasler Looking at the 878 User Manual, I *think* the test would be to send an SMS to a valid APRS call sign (e.g. KWrQY-10, EMAIL-2...) when on the analog APRS channel. As I understand the 878, it cannot receive an analog APRS message, which is unfortunate. Also, looking at the CPS, I agree, it appears you could modify the codeplug to send one and only message on the analog APRS channel. However you could only send one thing ever, sort of like Groot on Avengers of the Galaxy!

Dave I don’t know if I mentioned it but there is no analog APRS that anytone is saying. APRS is a digital transmission since its packet data. It is causing a confusion on the aprs world.

I bought one of these radios and it is sitting on the table locked. It come that way and you need to program it with a computer to unlock it. I can not get the radio to talk to the computer, and tried several different cables. I justed wasted over $200 dollars. The manual says if you push the menu and star button at the same time it will unlock. No it will not. Their are some youtube videos on how to unlock it, but the computer and radio need to talk.
