When I talked to Chris A. at CES I admitted that I was a little disappointed that the in-wheel motors didn’t work out from a traction standpoint, and from a performance standpoint. While I am 100% that efficiency should be the #1 priority, I do like fast. He revealed that they are thinking about a rear motor system that is not necessarily for performance, but a low power motor that could kick in at highway speeds in lieu of the front motor for even greater efficiency. Steve you put that idea out a while back after the single motor news. I don’t know if you influenced their thinking on this, but credit to you either way. I think it’s a great idea and if they can maybe also eke out a little more performance and traction all the better. I’m sure nothing is decided RE AWD, but I love the idea.
@AverageJoe928
@AverageJoe928 8 күн бұрын
I hope they go this route because it makes tons of sense. You get AWD when it's needed and potentially better efficiency at steady-state highway speeds. Give me that with 600 miles of range!

For another thing, if you take the wheel pants off for winter driving in snow, you still have turn signals. I applaud Mr. Hill's modesty, "not my design, math's design, Steve and Chris's vision." It is a surprise and delight! Simplicity is so much a part of Aptera, and mirroring nature, and its simplicity. I wish our government would catch up with the times, and allow the mirrors to be removed, in favor of the digital cameras, which are better from a glare point. Fog, snow, rain or fog a camera is better, and we should be utilizing the better way, which is by far the cameras.

You can say that, but my car has a digital camera option I can use for the rear window mirror and I hate it. Never use it. This week I tried switching back to it to see if I can get used to it, and I just can't. Now if it's done "right" maybe I can get behind it, but these are the issues I have with mine: you lose detail resolution, you lose 3D depth perception, the 60hz screen in my peripheral vision appears flickery to me and verges on giving me a headache, you have to change your focus from far to near and back which I find straining and time consuming, the lense constantly gets dirty and has to be cleaned by hand (they have a spray jet option, but it's ineffective), sometimes it's too dim in daylight and sometimes too bright at night, the image often gets blown out if headlights or sun hits the lense at certain angles making it practically unusable. Anyway, I just hate it. But I'm also open minded and they can provide some cool benefits like the improved aero.

Invariably one must look both ways (and across) multiple times quickly with certainty to exit my street. Given my exceptional driving skills (clean record and evidence by lowest insurance cost in most costly state) I’d opt for a paper enclosure over blind spots… only 1/2 joking I don’t plan on having my first collision now after 1/2 century of driving 😀 Also recall instance as passenger nearly hit cyclist b/c traffic, pedestrians AND cyclists (some, this 1, didn’t know to ride WITH vehicles). Your interviews of Chris, Steve, and Jason have been excellent. The only thing I find missing is a clear vision to get to production, i.e. can they get to production on a limited budget or do they need a big cash infusion to get to production. No matter how much money they have they would clearly need to do a few months of validation to make sure several systems are fully ready for production. What can Aptera enthusiast like us do (that don't have millions of dollars available) but may have hundreds or thousands of dollars available to help Aptera get to production? Happy to invest more money but just want some reassurance that it's not a lost cause, i.e. they can't make it to mass production unless they get the $60 million they wanted.

Some quick math says that if all 50,000 pre-order holders could "invest" (or donate) $1,200 then Aptera would have their 60 million dollars. That seems really doable to me. If Aptera could coordinate a campaign effectively communicating that and getting a census of how much people could commit to so that everyone could be assured that the campaign would end successfully, I think they could do it. I know $1,200 would be too much for a lot of individuals, but many others could probably do double, if they felt assured that it would get the vehicles into real production!

Likewise, I'm sure we will find aftermarket replacements for the yoke for drivers who prefer a steering wheel. Customizing their own Aptera will appeal to many buyers, I'm sure. @@josiahpaez4601 I'm sure some aftermarket companies like Recaro would make some lightweight seat that would fit. Aptera will be open and honest about dimensions and connections. As for the steering yoke, I'm not really a fan of that either. It has two little buttons on it and one of them is the horn. I think if you're turning a sharp corner and need to honk the horn, it might be a problem finding it quickly. My father had a Lincoln back in the 1960s with the best horn activator ever. The inner edge of the entire steering wheel rim was a squishy ribbon you squeezed to honk the horn. I thought that was brilliant -- no matter where your hands were, you could instantly honk. All you had to do was squeeze the steering wheel. It's a safety thing, right? I don't know of any cars which do that today, but they should!

According to the interview with Steve Fambro, the worst case scenario for cooling needs is fast charging under the summer Sun in a hot day with the AC on. This is what is driving the need for the air intake, which adds signifficant drag. But it would be ubercool if they pull out the trick to have a deployable air intake, that deploys when the car needs it when stationary, and retracts it when in motion and then using just skin cooling with a smooth underbelly.

Yeah, not only does a common chassis save cost on all of Aptera's various range options, but it also ensures the aerodynamics are a constant. The shape of the vehicle pretty much has to be the same. Even for bigger models or four wheel options, there should only be slight variations in the shape. In fact, the only variation SHOULD be to tweak the drag coefficient to make it even more efficient.

@josiahpaez4601 8 күн бұрын
Well, infact, I did pre-ordered a rear window hatch. But I get his intent, it wasn't a popular option. And what i think they should/could do is add horizontal louvers to the inside of the rear window (google Mustang hatch louvers for an example) so you can still see out the back and let some light in, but still have shade, privacy, and solar production across the top face of the louvers. It would be such a win win and look super innovative and clever.
@richardryley3660
@richardryley3660 7 күн бұрын
I had not thought of that but it sounds workable. But it also sounds like it will add a lot of weight and complexity to the hatch. Keep in mind the louvers will need to be large enough to fit the solar cells. They can't just cut one in half and mount it on two louvers. 😂 I would like to see a window hatch with some solar cells on it. Maybe 1/3 of the total hatch area. (30 cells) Maybe louvers would give more space for those cells above the window. Maybe there could be multiple hatch options.
@josiahpaez4601
@josiahpaez4601 7 күн бұрын
@richardryley3660 I don't think it necessarily needs to add all that much weight nor should it require anything particularly complex, it wouldn't need to move at all, which is what generally adds complexity. The cells are only like 5", just line them up in rows (not the diamond pattern) and space the louvers as far apart vertically as they need to be to keep each row from shading the row below. I did also think of the partial window hatch you mention and I think that would certainly be better than no cells on the hatch. I really wish I could have the opportunity to pitch my idea to the team, cause I think it's a really good idea that should be pretty easy to implement and add meaningful benefit. The only real concern I see would be if you stacked stuff too high in the trunk and then smooshed the delicate panels when closing the hatch. Anyway, maybe not an issue if they used that carbon fiber stuff. That should be strong enough and thin enough I'd think.

@@jasonc4421 I believe you are incorrect. Design is predominant in bringing a concept vehicle to auto shows. The Honda prototype at CES for example. Then a systems focused, multidisciplinary team (Engineering, Production, Finance, Supply Chain) is dominant to move the concept vehicle to production with integrated tradeoffs of design and other key factors. That is the reason production versions of the concept vehicles look so different than the show concept vehicles. Multi Objective and Multi Criteria Decision Tools are used to make sure the best combination of tradeoff's are made. That is why we didn't follow your described "system" of legacy and instead have the result you see which IS production intent. I know exactly the system we used to get this result because we equalized all the teams - led by DESIGN. This is why our result is BETTER than a concept vehicle - it is a "what you see is what you get" in full PRODUCTION. Legacy thinking = Legacy results = Legacy auto show concept vehicles which never see production.

@@jasonc4421 Jason, Aptera follows the paradigm exactly. The original design (Asume generated by you) resulted in the first show car. Aptera Gamma Reveal (About 80 complete) That vehicle was composite body, in wheel motors, skin cooling, Shorter body/hatch, fewer solar cells. The decision for carbon fiber body was result of expanded business opportunity, engineering, and production. The switch to one motor vs. in wheel motors, an engineering and budget decision. The configuration of the PI Vehicle, a summary of the features most customers had ordered. The switch from all wheel drive to front wheel drive, an engineering, production, finance, and schedule decision. The extended length of the body/hatch and additional solar cells, Engineering (Aero) and solar performance (Engineering) If guided by any "Ethos" the need to sacrifice design and mitigate some of the other factors to get a product out.

@jasonc4421 How could you possibly pat yourself on the back when you released an 88” wide vehicle with cosmetic enclosures below the beltline? Bad enough you threw away the L5-e EU market, but the entire wheel assembly will stick out beyond the side of an average vehicle (74” curb to door) when parallel parked. A serious hazard for cities that don’t have bike lanes. This would have to qualify as the worst metro proposal ever. If you want to simulate how obnoxious this is, go take a Polaris Slingshot, put a 5” wheel spacer behind each front wheel, and go drive it in a city. Or just go actually drive/live with the PI’s in a metro setting for a few weeks. 88” wide should have never, ever, been allowed out the door. You haven’t done the customers any favors.

The conversation around the cooling system was awkward and abruptly changed topics. Curious why?

@@ApteraOwnersClub right when you asked if there was a chance the air intake could move back to the cowl the conversation got sidetracked and it was never answered. Was really hoping to hear if this is still on the table, as it seems to make the most sense if the cooling is sufficient.

It was either Chris or Steve who stated that they have 3 alternative ways of doing the battery cooling. Validation will be the deciding factor to arrive at the best way to do it.

I’m really worried about the $60 million being obtained, plus it’s also not the end of fund raising, where are all the billionaires who claim to support modifying the warming of our planet?

The conventional wisdom was that there is little point to putting solar on the vehicle itself. Aptera is proving that wrong, but many rich folks may not have gotten the memo.

Am sure there is much brighter brains; but that "LPI" : License Plate Illuminator . It is just totally out of place . No other vehicle has that !!!!. Cant they have a light at the edge of the Trunk lid . Just seems much more practical that way. The current LPI looks like is going to the one which breaks the most ; guess that is the intent to protect the rest of the back !
