If you some how flip, how do you get out? Unlike a traditional door and window, you would not be able to open the door because it opens upwards and even if you roll down or break the window to get out it seems the opening might be a bit narrow since it has a divider through the middle of the window. I wouldn’t think you could kick out the front windshield because the car is front heavy so it would probably be against the ground. Maybe the rear hatch might open enough but maybe not since it would be opening in the direction of the ground. Or could you make the divider in the window removable in such an emergency? Or maybe an emergency lever could be integrated that when pulled would disconnect the door from the car.

I'd love to get an Aptera, but I'm worried about 2 things. My first minor concern is maintenance. Will this vehicle need to be hand-washed only? I'm not sure if it'd be safe for the vehicle to go through a car wash. My final concern is safety. How safe is this car in an accident? These vehicles, as mentioned in the video, are often categorized as an autocycle, which means they're exempt from auto safety testing standards. How will I know that this car won't electrocute me or any first responders who attempt to rescue me in the event of a crash. I mean, will I even survive a crash in the first place? Once this is answered, only then will I seriously consider an Aptera.

@@inomad1313 It does not translate. Race cars are very tough to withstand high speed crashes, but this toughness means very rapid deceleration and huge forces on the passengers. I'd love to see this car make it to the UK market. With 1000 miles of range, I'd never have to accept expensive roadside charging ever again. As others have mentioned, visibility of the side wheel assemblies is important for the driver of the vehicle parked next to you - especially if your car is on the passenger side of their vehicle. Those could easily be in their blindspot and therefore be fouled by the other driver when driving out of a parking space. A solution would be to have something like a pop up flag / other indicator out of each wheel assembly when parked.

The solution; if you have a fancy car try to not go to a public carpark but if you have to use one try to use the less busy places and if it’s too many car parking, park beside cars which reversed in. One thing that I'm incredibly curious about is the acoustics of the car. With the heavily reduced wind noise and there only being 3 sources of road noise (wheels) with two of them out on isolated pylons, the Aptera could end up being one of the best cars on the road for listening to music in. Are you guys testing the acoustics of the cabin for pockets of resonance and tuning the speakers accordingly? And what will the advanced audio package offer? The rear has a dual link instead of a single swing arm. I think it will be a much quieter and softer ride in the betas and my guess is that it still corners better with these changes. As much as I like the Aptera I can't deny that it is a very wide vehicle, about 10 inches wider than the current Prius. Not that it matters to me because I've driven school buses, but an unfamiliar driver can expect to see a few wheel curb rashes if they are not mindful. A full-size school bus is 93 inches wide, the Aptera 88". yes, you can fit a small school bus into two parking spaces easily but only because of the box shape and mirrors. The video isn't lying about the Aptera being parkable, although those fenders will be parking issues sometimes. Definitely be careful with parallel parking. Won't be a problem with our roads because everything is wide. More importantly, than width is the turning circle which i'd suspect should be good given the short wheelbase and the generous amount of Toe range that the wheels seem to achieve.

Indeed, the video of Jay Leno driving it around town showed him constantly veering out of his lane. But a new owner will eventually adapt. I calculated the Aptera Beta turn radius at 20.17 ft (6.15 m) [or less] based upon the following video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qaKYmZ2Jo79gbs0 Consider that the smaller (new) circle diameter is 5.5x (my measurement on the computer screen) the distance between the outer edges of the Aptera tires (88" which should be an overestimate as there are no wheel pants, hence the [or less] above). Since the radius is 1/2 the diameter: 88" x 5.5 / 2 / 12 (inches/foot) = 20.17 ft. Per reference.com: small city cars, such as Smart cars, can have a turning radii as small as 23.9 feet. The same site then talks about 2015/2016 sedans "in the middle range...of the list" having a turning radius of 37.4 feet.

My concern is that Aptera will spend too much of their company resources, just in Customer Education, thus cutting into profits and the health of the brand. As a "different kind of machine", I don't think the first models should be sold to the general public, but to competent technical people who understand the technologies and can give meaningful, cooperative feedback. I saw the video expecting a clarification for my main concern (UV resistance), but it wasn't mentioned. This car is designed to be charged by the sun, so it will spend most of its lifetime taking direct UV rays. How will the composite materials tolerate 10 years of direct sunlight compared to a traditional metallic made car? How long will be the warranty for sunlight UV degradation, and what will be the criteria for damaged panel replacement? On similar topic, what about the glue used to stick the solar cells. What is my resource if they start to fall off? Finally, for a car that will live outdoors, heat kills water stripping seals (I have seen it - a leaking car is not fun). Is there a warranty or maintenance schedule?
@n.brucenelson59202 жыл бұрын
If UV is a concern, periodic application of 303 UV protectant can go a long way. It has been proven on marine craft that live their lives out in the sun in tropical areas.
@famfloro2 жыл бұрын
@@n.brucenelson5920 I'm not an expert in the topic, but as far as I know resin-based composites degrade easily when exposed to UV rays. My question wasn't about how to prevent that as a consumer. There are a few other choices and this could all be interrelated I think that most of this will be resolved by the time production starts,, but I also think Aptera will be using the Kaizen concept of continuous improvement.

I wonder if you could make a video speaking more about that width, which is quite substantial. I looked it up, and it's 11 inches wider than the Polaris Slingshot, a 2 seat three wheeler of similar weight. What is the engineering thought process behind the width you've chosen?

How well does handle snow and ice, and not just a light covering, I mean inches 3, 4, 6 inches or more of snow, ice and/or slush. And lastly; Can the climate control deal with temperatures anywhere from -35F (that’s actual air temperature, not wind chill) to temperature as hot as 115F? In one of the video I watched the temperature extremes Aptera was looking at dealing with were something between 45F to 80F. News flash, -35F in the winter and as high as 115F in the summer are real possibilities, I’d like to know is the cabin climate control up for the challenge? A heated seat and steering wheel isn’t going to cut it if the rest of me is freezing.

There is so much uncertainty in the supply chain now that this question can't even be answered by manufacturers of cars that are already shipping. Manufacturing centers in China are shut down by Covid. Several factories in Japan were shut down by the earthquake last week. Factories in Ukraine are shut down by war. It is still possible that Aptera will be able to start delivering early production models by the end of the year, but there is a great deal of uncertainty in this. As far as winter driving, I suspect that Aptera will be capable, especially with studded snow tires up to around 5", similar to other compact cars. Part of the reason is that the ABS/traction control can detect slip and adjust torque on each driven wheel 32 times per wheel revolution, or about every 2.5" of tread travel for each driven wheel. This is a superior performance. Finally, the climate control is spec'd to perform over a range of -20 to 125 F, and the validation testing will cover this range. The performance should be fine at your high end, but we won't know what it is below -20 until people report back.
