3 year later and this video is still inspiring. Look at my system, uses the AIMS 3200 Generator with built-in AGS function, the 3kw Sungold Inverter-Charger in a aluminum tool box with vents. The whole system is autonomous and kicks on under loading and low battery. Plans to add a saddle mount 25 hydraulic tank for gas and an AC mini-split this summer. Keep rockn the home built system.

One of the nicer jobs ive seen . And yes iam z tech apu have their own compressor and inverter. A competent individual can build a nice unit, ive built 15units.that are as nice or nicer than any factory nit. Ive used def tanks for fuel even built 3 nice propane units utilizing 2. 30lb tanks. , remote electric start ,and battery charging capabilities all pre wired. And of course heat.

Thank you for posting an update on the setup, I came across your video while doing research on people who haul RVs with Semi (Class 8) trucks instead of using pickup trucks. After talking to multiple people who made the switch I came to realize that many claims that they get similar to better MPG towing their RVs with a used Semi for a fraction of the cost. Been thinking of picking up a used semi to test the waters on travel nursing and sleep in the cab for an assignment to see if the travel thing is for me. I love to travel, just not sure if it's worth the headache to move every 13 weeks for a new assignment or not yet. Was looking into ways to cool the cabin for me while on the assignment instead of idling the motor and didn't want to invest a ton of money into cooling the truck. Used semi's seem to be dirt cheap once they are outside their 3yrs or warranty period.

Since you are pulling an RV. Look into a pre-emissions engine. Some people say 2007 or older but those engines had duel turbos or EGR valves. To be safe I say 2005 or older. Then you don’t have to worry about idling the engine. If you do get a DEF/DPF engine. Then an APU or this setup is best. Do not idle these emission engines. The best setup if you have the funds. Get a kubota diesel generator and the rooftop a/c. Probably looking at around a 8-10k setup, but it’s better then those cheap APUs that break all the time and aren’t worth nothing in the summer time.

Great video. I wanted something similar installed on my truck. I talked to someone at rv shop and guy explained to me that those rv split ac units need to stay at a straight level on roof and because truck has slanted roof it won't work.

Good thing about it I could power all my power tools to do any repairs on my tractor or my trailer and u can run the engine or block heater that's what mine had and a trickle charger to keep the batteries up ,,,and you can wire the generator with a key switch inside the cab so u don't have to get out in the winter with a cable for the choke ,,,works for me lol good luck man

Thanks for the advice on the battery charger. I got mines Nov. 24th. It works great. The timing was good because my old one just stopped working. I also use a generator as an apu too. I have my generator installed under the trailer. I carry my motorcycle on the catwalk.

I actually copied your idea. With a 4000watt remote starter generator 4 agm batteries and I added a 75amp powermax battery charger and install a 12v air conditioner - it is an APU thanks

Thanks for the info in your video. I decided years ago to go the generator route instead of the expensive apu route. The down side to the generator is you have to put gas in it and it is more noisier than SOME apu. The advantages are that you can do way more things with it than a $10,000 apu that will only work on your truck. I'm going to buy a box similar to yours and the battery charger that you have. Thanks for the link to it. I'm going to order it today! The cooling fan on the back of my battery charger has stop working so it cuts off a lot. I have one amg battery and an engine start module. Just drill a hole in the exhaust pipe on the side weld the pipe into the stack and hook up the exhaust ,,,,you won't believe how quiet it makes the gen and the fumes go out the top keeps it out from under your truck keep on imagining that's what makes ideas work keep on keeping on

Try wrapping your metal exhaust with silver exhaust tape or try spraying it with flex seal once you fix that leak at the unit.

Make sure it’s in good. As long as it’s solid, it should last. What you feel in your air ride seat bouncing up and down and hitting hard, isn’t what the back of the cab feels. Unless you have worn out airbags and shocks. I hit some pretty good bumps doing 75mph that will throw you up to the ceiling. All is good. Also, get a cover. You can find them on Amazon for around $20 keeps the dust and water out. If water gets inside, since the truck is bouncing, it will go into the inside of the cab. Hope this helps! Good luck. It will cool your cab down better then any APU. Been using a setup like this for almost 5 years. NO ISSUES. And I have only used 2 generators. Only reason I had to buy a new one, was someone stole it!

Got most of my stuff for my diy apu. Went with a Chinese 10hp diesel engine. A GM 12v alternator. A universal car ac compressor. Found a huge evaporator and fan unit new for a small shuttle bus to put in the overhead compartment of my Columbia. A universal 12v radiator fan for the condenser coil. I'm sure it's going to be lots of headache hooking it up but we gotta do something. I'm thinking you should run that exhaust back under the frame past the 5th wheel as far as you can so you wake up the next day. I may put a garden hose fitting on mine to kill the guy with the loud stereo that pulls in at 2 am on meth.

@@DrivingByBraille I have never made a video but I might have to when I get through. Everything I bought came out larger than expected. The engine, by the time I got the $, the only one was the 10hp. Alternator, looked exactly like one for a car. I get it, it's bigger. Probably from a truck. The evaporator, sounded smaller in the description. I might have a condenser issue. It seems small but I can always upgrade. If we never try we will never have anything.

Positive end goes to the positive side of the batteries. Negative end goes to the negative side of the batteries.

It’s plugged into the generator. When I run the generator, while the truck is off, it fully charges the batteries. Batteries will last a lot longer if they are kept at a full charge. The jumper part of it, is just Incase.

The Honda 3000 will run it. This was a 13500btu

A change that could possibly benefit this setup is switching out the single 3000+ watt generator for a pair of smaller generators that have a parallel connection available. We live in Colorado and every year the power goes out if we get a big snow storm, so we keep a generator around to mainly keep the frig and freezer running. 2 years ago my 5500 watt Generac died after we lost power for a few days and friend let me use his Honda 2000watt generator he keeps around for camping until I replaced mine. That little Honda didn't even struggle at all and was far quieter and actually consumed far less fuel overall and I ended up just buying it off him since he wanted to upgrade to the newer 2200 watt Honda generator to run his Camper a/c, since the 2000 watt couldn't. Well after he bought his new generator i asked if i could test out the parallel mode and we ran both connected via the cable and powered a 16k btu RV a/c on his camper and it was half as loud with the 2 running, since both generators split the load when the compressor came on and sat in eco otherwise. So i went ahead and picked up a 2nd one and did some testing on my own, running 2 of them used less fuel overall powering the house compared to running just 1 when we had our power go out this past winter. The drop in load on both just makes them run more efficient at lower rpms when running together. I bypassed the built in fuel tank and just ran new fuel lines to both units with a fuel quick disconnect in the line ran to a 12 gallon boat fuel tank i picked up local at walmart for cheap. In regards to prices bought the 2000watt unit from my buddy for $400, and bought the new EU2200i unit from Northerntool for $850 new using a %15 off coupon i found online. 2 of them is cheaper than the single Yamaha unit you listed you are using.

I have an electric apu with a shore connection underneath my driver door. I'm considering removing the steps for the catwalk, building a box with steps and stuffing a generator in there to power my shore plug. The electric apu only works for about 5 hours off it's batteries which sucks. However installing a generator to connect it to my shore power will make sure my ac works even 5 hours after my generator runs out of fuel. How many hours can you run your generator before an oil change? Sorry for the long comment 😅

I was changing the oil every few months. That’s probably bad considering they recommend to change every 10hrs. But I have had no issues. These little generators really preform. My little predator generator I had before it was stolen was almost 3 years old and I ran it 30-40 hours a week. Still ran strong. Changed the oil maybe 5 times. If it’s an inverter generator and your not running it under a load (charging your batteries) could last up to 12hrs. I usually get 10-11hr running the AC with the 0.9 gallons. The extended tank, I fill it up once a week.

I'm probably going to run my mack 3 weeks on 10 days off when this covid thing blows over, so I guess every three weeks I will do the oil change on the generator. Also on the passenger side I have a box with a battery bank that powers the apu, do you think I should keep those 4 giant batteries when I put in my generator or should I just get rid of the apu battery bank to save weight ( keep in mind my apu has a truck jump start capability just incase my truck batteries die and I'm not sure that will work anymore if I get rid of the battery bank even with the generator on giving shore power)

I’d keep everything the same. Get a small 2000 watt generator. Plug it into the shore power. It will power everything and hopefully charge those batteries if it’s hooked up right. The generator would pretty much be idling. Get 12+ hours out of 0.9 gallons. Carry 5 gallons of gas, should be good for a week. Make sure you get a steal gas can. Harbor freight has them for $30-40.

I did one for my WesternStar that’s more in depth. This was one of my first video’s. Mainly this was just for visuals. If your mechanically inclined, this shouldn’t be a problem to follow. If you need a step by step, hand held instructions. I’d look into having someone else do it.

My grandfather can tell you about the big 30 inch steering wheels two shifters on the floor and you had to pull up on the steering wheel to push the clutch in and what the hell is a air ride Seat. What the hell is it with the thing with charging your batteries. What ever kind of APU you use is not running off your truck batteries so why would you need to be worried about charging them. It’ll be like you park the truck for your 34 hour break come back the next day hop in the truck turn the key and go. The only time my batteries didn’t start my truck when it was 15 below zero and I forgot to plug the engine block warmer in but yet that’s on an old-school truck.
