Installing a new air conditioner in the WesterStar. Using the existing window, I just unscrewed the window frame, popped the window out, made a templet of the window, cut out and framed the opening to install an 8,000 BTU window A/C Unit. I have it running with a 2000/1600 Watt inverter generator from harbor freight. From initial testing, it seems to be able to keep the inside sleeper cool enough. You can contact me at

Im an owner operator . I have predator 3500 generator with 6 gallon extended run tank , 7000btu portable ac , and Noco genius pro 25 amp charger to charge , maintain and repair batteries when I'm taking my 10 . I have that set up for little more then a year now and I'm glad i didn't spend 12k$ on termoking apu lol . I bought generator on sale with 20% off so it costed me only like 700$, genius pro 25 amp charger was 425$, 25ft good extention cord 25$, and ac was 350$, overall I've only spent 1500$ . With this setup i can buy new generator every year and still save money over buying apu lol . Im surprised not many owner operators do it .

Great video! Now I run a 5000btu in the passenger window. It's powered with the new harbor freight 4500watt inverter generator and is very quiet. To heat the cab I use a Chinese Diesel heater. I have a block heater but I only use that when parked at home, I plug it in the night before I want to leave, then I turn the Chinese diesel heater on an hour or two before I want to leave so the cab gets nice and warm inside. The only time I idle the truck is if it's under 15° outside through the night when out on the road, I don't like starting the engine when it's too cold I feel like it's hard on the motors when you do that. Obviously as it gets down below 0° I run the truck to keep the diesel in the tanks warm. Still not often do I need to do that though. Finally I run an inverter like you would see in an ambulance or an RV for the benefits of the Shore power, I like it plugged in at home to maintain the battery's and keep the refrigerator running so I don't need to empty it over the weekends. This particular inverter also has saved me in a pinch on more than one occasion where I have drained batteries too low to start the motor. I will get my inverter generator out start it up plug it into my shore power socket and within about 7 to 8 minutes the batteries are charged enough to crank the motor over. These things are all I need out here on the road to keep me comfortable and happy. If I need a new AC I go to the local hardware or department store and buy a new one to replace it, same as with a generator. There is No need for me to find a mechanic or authorized dealer/repair shop for an APU unit and no need to spend 10,000 plus dollars getting one installed.

So far mine makes it pretty much snow in the back. The thing works great! And the generator has ran over 10hr consistently. Of course once it stays 90-100 degrees at night, I might have to install a extended tank. But already have one on hold and ready if that happens.

I hace a system with a portable ac/heater with the house going to the little window on the side of my truck. I add 5 batteries on top the 3 that my truck already has and add and extra alternator. The problem with this is that even though I have 8 batteries the system won't last more than 2 hours and the batteries gets depleted, and because my truck is a 2000 century the insulation is pretty bad and the floor gets way to hot and the roof as well so I need to work on my insulation and getting one of those predators to avoid keeping my truck on cuz even at idle and the 2 alternator, it doesn't generate enough energy to keep the ac or heater on, just when is at over 1300 rpms. But thales batteries cost me nothing as I had it there laying and the ac I bought rebuilt on Ebay for $180, the extra alternator for $160 and the double zero cables for $70. Its being a big learning process as I had to learn how to solder the terminals to the cables as just crimping won't stop the rust and many other issues, but I have being with this system for 2 years already and has worked somehow good enough but not good enough lol.

Yes. I looked at diesel generators. The only benefit I seen was not needing to fill it as I could tap into the trucks tanks. I found the benefits of gas, for my operation, out weighed a portable diesel generator. Gas was cheaper, quieter, lighter, easily removed, and better or fuel efficiency. But again, that was just my operation. People need to do what would be best for them.

An apu means auxiliary power unit , so by definition what you made is an APU, but for the convenience of an integrated system, I did pay that $10,000. The convenience of having my engine coolant heated in the winter, my batteries always charged, my heat and AC come on at the press of a button and the fact that I don’t have to carry around a gas can makes it worth the money. I will never knock down a person for doing what’s best for him.

I would like to see if you can give me an update on how your generator is doing and where you installed it as I had problems with them with the vibration, the break easily but I have used the ones that are shipper and have tubes that protect them. Leaving them outside and getting all the raing, snow and all kinds of dirt screw them easily, the vibration breaks their rubber supports so I don't know how this generators that are enclosed will react to all this issues. That's why I rather use a power inverter with 8 batteries and 2 alternators but the energy stored will only last for about 2 hours and the alternators doesn't produce enough energy at idle neither, so I can only use it whe running and the rpms are over 13000. I have an old 2000 century and have already spent thousands trying to fix the ac with not much luck so that's why I went this way and on top of all that, the insulation of my truck is BS and either the floor as the roof gets way to hot and the ac can't work all that heat and just shoots off so I have to run with the windows open sometimes.
@DrivingByBraille

Regular batteries won’t work. As you see you only get 2hrs. Look up 6volt batteries or golf cart batteries. You run them together. I forget the whole way of hooking them up. But there is tons of info on KZbin about running an a/c with 6volt golf cart batteries and solar panels. Might be a better solution. As far as the generator. I use to just leave it in the passenger side of the truck and took it out when I needed it. Recently I strapped and chained it to the side I’ve the truck and seems to be doing good.

I also think the standard APU system is stupid. It uses up most of the storage space under the bed and it’s crazy expensive for what you get. Those cheap engines make a lot of noise and it’s hard to park near shippers without someone calling security. I’m doing this same thing but with a roof unit and diesel generator under the cab. That way I can route the exhaust into the trucks exhaust so it’s quiet at night. Also, I don’t get that cold air blasting right in my face and the unit gets the hottest air from high up. It’s also good to insulate the cab because what you get from freightliner is junk.

Just get a 12v plug. They are different looking. And just wire it up to the fan. You could get real professional and tie in a veritable temp gauge and controller. That turned out nice. Fuck all those dudes that say it's not an APU. Outside of having to stick my ac in the window, I've been happy w it after adding that hard start capacitor. If you're parked during daytime put reflectix or some mylar type shit in your windows. That will help a ton and keep the ac from having to bust ass non stop.

Yeah, still need to make it more cosmetically appealing. But first night so far, it is only running for about 5 mins the turns off, but it is only 60 degrees up here in SLC. Did you check that spark arrest? I believe you said you also had the predator generator. My started acting weird for a few months. Losing power and not operating some of my stuff. Then it just died. Found out the exhaust was completely caked with carbon due to that damn spark arrest.
@usdpaulp
@usdpaulp 5 жыл бұрын
@@DrivingByBraille I'll have to remove the spark arrestor for sure. When I get home, I'm going to attach pex pipe between the bunk floor and generator box. Inside the pex, I'll run an extra long pull cord. That way I can start and stop the generator whenever I want. If it works I'll make a video so you can see if it's something u might want to do. Just need to figure out the choke. If it's similar to the larger predator I should be able to move the choke remotely by using a door lock actuator.

an APU also adds block water heat on a timer, battery monitor so if your alternator fails the APU will kick in and charge your batteries, heat for the winter, a/c for the summer, and 120v outlets in the bunk. as well as a few more configurations you can do for temp control in the bunk etc.

To be more specific. Mine heats the coolant via block heater, heats the fuel, heats the oil and can repair batteries, which the batteries that are in that truck are over 4yrs old. Ohh and I can pretty much run ANY power equipment I need. And my A/C will out perform ANY APU. If APU were so “Superior” why are the only used on trucks and not RVs or Super Sleepers? GENERATORS are.

There is actually a code in the green bible that talks about external tanks. I forget what it is. But I read it 5 years ago and it really does not apply to this. If I had a 50lb propane tank strapped to the catwalk. There might be an issue. But I agree. If when in doubt. Pull out the green bible.

No it's less efficient using a floor unit. Too much heat is radiating off of the exhaust hose. It ends up being counter productive. I have tried it even wrapping the hose up in a sleeping bag to Insulate it with no real benefits. I fully recommend a window unit.

I like the design in general. I personally would build a battery bank that charges while the trucks driving down the road. Also equipped with shore power. And have the generator as a long-term back up if necessary. Essentially free power on a day-to-day basis. With the battery Bank. This would also cover the pick up and unloads for free. Shore power for when I'm at home. And the generator for 34s and to top off the truck and DIY Apu battery Bank. I guess my only concern is. Would it clear with a reefer unit? All around though. I like your design. I would have reinforced in a bit more though.

@@DrivingByBraille on the level. What ever works for you, works. One of my customers a long time ago built an apu that was a small diesel engine he got from northern tool that ran a 3 phase generator... the generator ran a Coleman rv heater air conditioner under his air dam and (why he chose 3 phase) a welder. If any of his drivers broke down he was the recovery vehicle. And I think his pricetag (minus the welder) was around $3,000

Like what? Explain what more an APU does? Keep your coolant warm? I can hook up an oil pan heater and plug my block heater into the generator. I can plug a space heater which works way better than an APU. I had an APU. Came with the truck. I would never spend 10-15k for one. My setup will do more than an APU. I can run power tools, help other people with my generator. Jump start someone. I also charge my batteries with my generator. If you like APU’s that fine. But don’t say they are better and my set is not an APU. APU stands for auxiliary power unit. My generator is an auxiliary power unit by definition.APU also cost 10x more to maintain. Oil changes cost $400 for a shop to do it. For me to do it. Cost about $120. I can do a full service 10-12x on my generator for that.
