Im confused. In the alkenes video you said that the alcohol is formed from the alkyl hydrogen sulphate using cold water. In the alcohols topic you are saying steam is used and not cold water?

the reaction conditions for both are different so the mechanisms are slightly different

Hi there, thank you so much for the video really helpful. Just wanted to ask in regards to the making of cyclohexene. When the reactants are boiled to 83, is it not because the product of cyclohexene has a bp of 83?

Yea ur right I think it was a mistake, as cyclohexene has a bp of 83 not cyclohexanol as it has a bp of 161.8 and it wouldn't make sense to be distilling for cyclohexanol

re: dehydration of non- primary alcohols with acid catalyst are the 2 different products that r formed just as likely or is there a major and minor? i dont think there is, so r both just as likely to be formed??

depends if you're oxidising with excess oxygen or excess alcohol

There is a major and minor cos one has a primary carbocation intermediate and the other has a secondary carbocation intermediate.
