This video goes through the A2 topic of Kinetics. It deals with orders right through to the calculations involved.

Important to note at 18:25 that you can only cancel the x10 to the powers if the powers are all the same (eg in the example they are all to the power of -6 and thus you can just cancel them). great vid though helps explain it really clearly. :)

31:38 Order of reaction, with respect to one of the species, is the power to which the concentration of that species is raised in the rate expression. So isn't the answer simply 2?

I apologize in advance as this question may be badly worded . However, given a scenario when the concentration of one substance is halved and the effect this has is rate X4, but the other side of the table is not constant, how would we then work out the order of the other substance. Instead of multiplying by the initial rate by the orders square , would we then divide by the orders square?
@cabdulrahmanmohamed68848 жыл бұрын
+yusuf christie nah...nvr divide...always times....but since u found a factor of (1/2) in the concentration of first molecule, work out the second one... if concentration change of the second molecule is 4; then order is 0 for first and 1 for second if concentration change of the second molecule is 2; then order is 0 for first and 2 for second if concentration change of the second molecule is 8; then ooder is 1for first and 1 for secoind etc etc etc so bascially Work out the concentration change of the second molecule......i see u saying the con for second is not constant....but u can still work out using the factor u got for molecule1 and some sort of info u'd be given in question or intial rates (or both) to conclude; never divide....just stick to multiplying (if wanna divide... multiply by 1/2)
@MrERintoul8 жыл бұрын
+yusuf christie I'm sorry that I missed your comment, but massive thanks to Cabdulrahman for helping! Right, so you're looking at a situation where in 2 experiments, each reactant has a different concentration i.e. no constants to make it easy. But you know that the rate is x4 when looking at the 2 experiments and that the first (which I will call A) is halved. In this case, you would need to know the order with respect to A. If it was 0 order, A would not affect the rate, 1 would mean that the rate would be halved and 2 would mean that the rate would be quartered (square of half). Once you know what A would have done to the rate, look at how the rate has changed from what A would have done to it and this tells you how the other reactant (which I will call B) has affected the rate based on the order. It's hard to go into too much detail without numbers really, but if you can find an example for me like this, I will try and help!

@MrERintoul10 жыл бұрын
Imran Khan Hey, Imran! A good question! I can't say that I've seen a question like that (I may have missed it...) - but it's possible! Imagine the following rate equation... rate = k [A] [B] If you were asked to calculate the concentration of A, you would just rearrange the equation make [A] the subject. i.e. [A] = rate / ([B] x k) That helped?

Would a second order reaction be the rate-determining step over a first order reaction ?
@MrERintoul9 жыл бұрын
W23 dragon Hmm, not sure it's as easy as that. If you're given a few steps that a reaction works by and then asked to determine the rate-determining step, you need to use your knowledge of the rate equation for that particularly overall reaction. The rate-determining step will include those species from the rate equation. Does that help at all?
