Old Shenandoah Valley Barn Exploration : Metal Detecting

Metal detecting and exploring an old barn at the lower end of the Shenandoah Valley is on tap tonight. Please join me and my friend, Eric, as he gives me a tour of his family's pre-Civil War era barn. We are accompanied by racehorses from the nearby Hollywood Casino and Race Track in Charlestown WV, and a few wild rats and pigeons. We then venture out on his family property to search for coins and other relics. We find a nice little Civil War camp at the end of the day and look forward to getting back out there and finding MOAR! soon.

You just brought back so many great memories. I was raised on a farm and miss it. The smell of those old barns were the best smell in the world. It’s a smell of hard work and freedom. All we did was worked hard and hunted and fished. No time to do drugs or get in trouble. Thanks for showing us around ❤️

I can also comment on the "ham" story! I had a friend of mine that also hung "green" hams in a smokehouse. We went to collect a ham for dinner and when I saw what he was going to take down I yelled "There are maggots on that meat!" He continued with his chore and explained the process to me, so no big deal. Turned out to be one of the BEST hams I had ever eaten! I also learned that during the wars of past history it was a common practice to place maggots on infected wounds as they would only "eat" the bad, infected, part of the wound and was a preventative measure to guard against gangrene.

I still call a fresh ham "green ham", every time I say (out of habit) they look at me with that 'what the hell look'. Thanks for sharing and have a great day.

In some medical facilities they are using maggots and leeches because they do a better job of ‘cleaning up’ an injury/infection without harming healthy tissue than modern medicines can!

I really enjoyed this one, Beau. The old barn is incredible. I don't think I've ever seen one where the loft area is so high. I considered myself lucky as we always had horses. The unlucky part was cleaning the stalls. .😜. You are such a great teacher and I'm sure Eric appreciated everything he learned on this day. The bonus was finding a few civil war bullets. The maggot story was also interesting as most people don't realize they have been used in medicine to deal with necrotic (dead) tissue with infections. I've seen it. What a beautiful property. Loved the horses.

Love old barn! I started out cutting, raking, hauling hay by horse to “make hay” and store it by haystacks. Later we used tractors and balers to create square bales which were stored in barns and hay sheds. Occasionally they were stacked outside and covered with tarps to protect them from weather. Reminds me of watching hay in the barns for high temperatures. If the hay was put up “green” the temperature could get hot enough to burn, or mold, thus destroying the hay or burning down a barn! Thanks for sharing.

That is a beauty barn! Well built. It must have been cold in there. I could see you were keeping your ears warm. 😉 We have HUGE square bales in our area as well as the big round ones. It is always so cool to hear what settings you use on different machines. I would never have thought about putting that Ace in coin mode or relic mode to take out some of the electrical noise. Thanks for showing all of us some tips and tricks. I never knew about aluminum horse shoes. Yes, go back and show us the rats at night. 🐀🌛✨ Boy! Is your hair ever getting long. 😁

My great grandparents had a big beautiful barn with a grass ramp leading up to the second floor. The barn is still standing and as beautiful as ever. I took a nostalgic walk through my memories as you showed that beautiful barn.

We had a barn like that on my parents farm in upstate NY. It was built in 1844 and is still standing today. And yeah, the rats were a thing. We'd go after them will pump up pellet rifles, but we didn't get nearly as many as the pet ferret a friend of mine had. He was hard on the rat population! Once he got going, it was hard to get him to stop...carnage!

When I was young and lived on a farm my stepfather got me a Red Rider BB gun to shoot birds in the barn and not through the roof. My partner in crime was a black cat who would stay by my side until the bird hit the ground then he would jump on them. His name was BC.

back in the day me and my sister had a game. Go out to the barn at night with a flash light and welding gloves .and spot light rats and catch them by hand . we would release them and do it all over agene. farm kid fun.

I was wondering if you were going to leave your detector out in the horse lot when you were going in to the barn! Could have been a BIG MISTAKE!!!! Horses, cattle, hogs, you name it, seem to always be attracted to metal detectors. How do I know this? Well I was detecting an old home site in a cattle pasture and my dad laid his detector on the ground to see what I had found. Moments later I looked over and saw some cows standing over his detector and they had walked on his headset!
