One of the worst things you can do in boat life is to let a schedule dictate your plans and actions. Unfortunately, that is easier said than done. My goal for almost a year was to cruise down to the Florida Keys for at least a couple of months this summer. There were many boat projects that I needed to complete to have her ready for the trip, and I was also due for my insurance renewal which required me to haul Motor Vessel Aqua-Cultured out of the water for survey. In order to maintain my insurance coverage, I must haul the vessel every 3 years for an up to date survey. This timing also works out well since that is about the time that the bottom paint needs to be refreshed. I had to book the haul out and survey months in advance. And I also reserved my slip in the Keys months in advance as well, which meant I needed everything come together as planned to make it happen. The marina I made my reservation with only lets you push your reservation back a week without charging you or cancelling the reservation. And if you cancel to rebook, there is high likelihood that you will not be able to get a slip. Per usual, everything came right down to the line to make my haul out date. And then there is always the concern that there will be a yard delay or you discover something out of the water that will necessitate a costly and time consuming project. So, you can imagine the stress level was elevated.
In this video, I finish up a last minute project which involved servicing the above and below deck components of my Maxwell 3500 Windlass. And of course there were some inherent challenges! Then I had the boat hauled out, my insurance survey conducted, a bottom job completed, and a few odds and ends that could only be taken care of out of the water. Luckily everything went relatively smooth and as planned.
