I have 32 cichlids in a 180 gallon. I clean pre-filter weekly. What are your thoughts on when to clean the whole thing.

I'm afraid trial and error is the only way to figure that out... Even if you just take the lid off it should give you an idea. You might only need to clean it twice a year depending on the size and type of fish. But you need to figure out the reality of your tank's needs. If I were you I would check it every two months until you figure out how quickly it clogs. No need to clean it each time. Just inspect it.
