Personally I noticed how Alex went down instead of up in his mind dungeon and I thought it was weird, but I interpreted it as Alex digging deeper into his own mind to find out what is in subconscious. -Sammy "living rent free" in his head because he read a post on ONISM about a tragic, mentally vulnerable woman that he idealized as a waifu that he must save. - Michael "his senpai" who was his friend but then ghosted him and he feels he wasn't good enough for him. - "Deadbeat daddy" as his tormentor and excuse to justify his shitiness. - And of course, himself. Just spinning the narrative in any way that he needs to to not apologize, to not learn, to not break out of his delusions. So this journey is not really about realizing your mistakes and making a change in your life, is it? It's about residing deeper into your delusions and not take accountability, to not change. "To kill your proto-you instead of becoming it" I always tell people that if they want to actually understand what is going on in the story that they should listen to Proto-Michael because he's the most reliable narrator, but by that point they're already so sick of the game (aka how Alex is telling the narrative) that they just don't care anymore. 36:04 Also I did not expect the drukard drawing. It made my day lmao

Something I haven't seen brought up much re: the dating of the game is that the word "Onism" was literally invented around 2014 by John Koenig on his blog Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows. It means: the frustration of being stuck in just one body, that inhabits only one place at a time, which is like standing in front of the departures screen at an airport, flickering over with strange place names like other people's passwords, each representing one more thing you'll never get to see before you die-and all because, as the arrow on the map helpfully points out, you are here.

It's because if we're being honest. Alex is many of us. Male and female. Alot of us can relate to this. I had daddy issues until I finally let him go at 29 years old. I was just coasting. Wanting to believe I could become something better but not actually working to achieve it. Afraid of failing. At one point I was afraid of becoming a man. But until I quit the excuses and actually tried I could NEVER get there. He made me feel like I was a mistake and that I'd fail at everything I tried. And when I did even if I actually tried I felt like he might have been right. But I kept getting back up and learning that the world isn't gonna end cause I failed. As long as I learn something and use it. Now I work in I.T. and I'm not to where I can make enough to be super comfortable cause the economy and stuff but I was told I can't do it. I don't have to work at the refineries. I can do it the way I know I'm good at. But until I looked at myself and really asked why I was never gonna get there. I found out until I cut him off and stop letting him abuse me verbally and mentally I could finally get there and it's never too late to. Sorry for the word wall. Lol

Fun extra details with regards to Essentia teaching Alex his greatest flaw, this scene contains a lot of Essentia implying that he is destined to destroy, that even despite urging him to recognize and work to correct his flaws, it's hopeless and they should instead escape. Think back to the first segment of the video where we talk about the time in which Alex lives, and his generation. How many times have you heard this phrase, that "millenials ruined/destroyed/killed" something? It's the exact same meta-narrative this entire generation is subject to on some level. This is pretty convenient thing for Alex, a guy desperate for narratives to revoke his responsibility.

been obsessed with yiik since it released. the gameplay itself was mostly just kind of boring & monotonous, with a few fun or clever moments. the battle system is somewhat dull, but i get if the repetitiveness is actually a positive for some. the story was what actually intrigued me so much & what still has me waiting for IV. I’m interested in the new characters they’re introducing. it’s ultimately an extremely easy game to make fun of, I think it’s partially why I enjoy it so much. i don’t think I love it just out of some sense of irony, nor can I admit to genuinely believing it’s a fantastic game. it’s a fascinating work that successfully seems to always elicit some kind of strong response from people. This video was amazing great work! Also it’s just like you say when having all the points in the story written out infront of you it all clicks. I think the whole TV raised Alex is so interesting, even the fact that his own home is the set of full house shows that he finds more homely comfort from that show than he did in his own house so his idealised version is just the show, it’s so clever how all these little things show alexs character!

Experiencing a parallel life is a fascinating concept. And it doesn't necessarily need to be parallel lives, it just needs to be the resolution and harmony of sensory paradoxes, whether those sensory paradoxes are physical, emotional, psychological, spiritual, mental, moral, ideological, ethical, or something in between or beyond. The more you resonate, the more you understand, the more you work through, the more you accept, the more you allow inside, and the more you resolve, leads to more and more flexing of the brain until it becomes a lotus that begins to blossom outward up through the dimensions. Alex himself is trapped below, and keeps pushing himself down into the water instead of properly blossoming. Like the nature of finding the union of light and dark, before seeing things in blue and orange, and then finding the union of blue and orange, only to move upward into trinities, fractaling facets of crystalline eternities. Becoming more and more, understanding, accepting, opening, flexing, stretching. The amount of what you can be, the amount of what you are, never ceasing, never ending, remembering, and becoming. It makes me wonder if some of the code will change to open up more of the Third (Eye) Ending if you refuse to level up AT ALL throughout the course of the game in the Mind Dungeon.

i thought meta narratives were the reason an author does something in the narrative .like an author writes a conflict in the narrative but the meta narrative reason that conflict exists is because the author wanted to develop the characters personalities through it
@hellkrai
@hellkrai Жыл бұрын
It's really difficult to explain because there's so many ways people could try to understand what a Meta-narrative is. If you compare it to a term like Meta-game. It could also make more sense. It's frustratingly a per-person kind of thing to kind of explain from what I've seen. But the root of it all is that it's a narrative ABOUT narrative. And this extends outward into narratives we accept in our daily lives.

Honestly, if all of this is true, I mostly just feel bad for Alex. If all of this is taking place in his mind, as some sort of way of self comfort from his own destroyed relationships, we can see that he is a truly pitiable person. Being basically an abandoned child, who grows up with no sort of positive figure to care for him or help him develop well, it's sad to see him fail so miserably, and confine himself inside of his own mind, hoping to eventually create the reality in which he can be happy, but being thwarted by his own faults every single time.

I have so many questions about Vella. Did Alex actually know her? Was she actually involved in the story at all? Or did Alex just make up that she was there? Also I never noticed that it's the Full house set! The table having 6 chairs was bugging me lol. The raised by TV thing hits super close to home too, I really hate how relatable Alex is sometimes.
@sneeze4100

I love these kinds of questions, it's not impossible that the Vella we see in-game is 100% the product of cyberstalking, but I'd say there's no definite confirmation on that either, which is a fun way for that kind of detail to be.
@StarBlue42
@StarBlue42 Жыл бұрын
@@sneeze4100 it really cracks the story wide open, because if you remove Vella, then the golden Alpaca scene becomes way worse. Since Vella was the only person there (besides Michael but he's a whole other can of worms) that was actually concerned about Rory. I still haven't beaten the game yet. But I get the idea that every time things in the story get particularly weird, it's because Alex is making up something to distract the player from something he's ashamed of.
@sneeze4100
@sneeze4100 Жыл бұрын
@@StarBlue42 By the logic that you'd use to remove Vella from this scenario, you're essentially removing the layers of fiction. Perhaps Vella really did give advice like that to somebody, maybe Alex really did have brief encounters with her at some point in his life. Regardless, point is that to do so would be applying the same logic that removes Michael as well as the Golden Alpaca from the scenario. In other words, just Alex and Rory. How do you think Rory accepting that he's delusional and trying to face his trauma might go down if Alex was the only one with him? I recall a scene later in the game where if you rush Rory while talking to him at a diner, Alex says "being depressed is a choice," and rants at Rory about how he needs to get over himself. He's so dreamy 😍

Yes, but not the Alex you play as. If we are to believe that "a beginning is some other beginning's end" (26:46), the fact that Alex Eagleston dies at the end and leaves everything to your avatar means you're supposed to be Eagleston's successor; the new beginning who's learned from Eagleston's mistakes, the one who can actually make changes, and the one who's hopefully become better than the toxic man trapped with self-loathing and 90's nostalgia. The game leaves your avatar's fate in the open because you're now on your own in real life.

One thing that seems interesting to me is the dialogue that isn't voiced. There's certainly more voiced dialogue than non-voiced (at least for the main cast), but some sequences are only visual. I think it represents a rewrite in the story. Not an altered event, but a new one entirely. It's why they contradict the story more than anything else, they're too far-fetched, even in a delusion. None of them are acknowledged in voiced dialogue either. None of it mentions the cassette ghost, or Vella's mind dungeon, or any events introduced from silent dialogue.
@ilikegoblo4665
@ilikegoblo4665 Жыл бұрын
I disagree. I just think some lines weren’t voiced, and I don’t think it necessarily indicates the value of them. Also I’m curious what non voiced dialogue you think contradicts the story, also the Vella mind dungeon is acknowledged in voiced dialogue, there’s a conversation chondra and the gang have about going into Vellas mind dungeon. Another example I can give is Alex’s interactions with semi they didn’t happen yet a majority is voiced, and even in yiik iv the scene with Wilhelm is voiced so I don’t believe using voiced compared to non voiced dialogue is a good indicator of what did or didn’t happen
@Supic_
@Supic_ Жыл бұрын
@@ilikegoblo4665 If you're talking about the scene in the burger joint before you can enter Vella's mind dungeon, I don't mean to say that they never entered her mind dungeon, but that the contents of it were fabricated by Alex. I don't recall seeing any voiced lines about compromising Vella's privacy or about Alex being a creep by kissing the Vella balloon, or even complaints about having to go through all those puzzles for some record. Also, it's Vella's mind dungeon, why is there a giant unsolved band puzzle there at all? If it's normal for this type of thing to show up, then she would've solved it by now since she had access to her mind dungeon from before the start of the game. There's also the Essentia dream room showing up, which is something only Alex has seen. The interactions with Semi Pak happened in Alex's mind dungeon, so while he didn't fabricate the events happening, they also didn't take place in the real world. He believes they were real, and went through that experience, but the entire sequence was a delusion that was created by his mind dungeon. The largest proof I have for voiced dialogue's importance is that when Michael switches houses, Alex talks to his mother and references this when they meet up later. Michael's mother has voiced lines, and as far as I remember she only shows up in this sequence and nowhere else. I also don't mean that voiced dialogue is completely accurate, but that an "altered event" will have voiced lines, while completely new events won't have voices because they're too disconnected from what actually happened.

I mean a lot of that has to do with literal re-writing. As in, Andrew re-wrote about 25% of the script after most of it had been voice acted.
@linguisticspaceship
@linguisticspaceship 8 ай бұрын
@@Erimgard13 That is a myth. The game's "rewrite" came in during the 2017-2019 development of the game. They released a demo in 2016 (the games original release date) called Episode Prime, and if you datamine it it reveals that the full script of the game was left in on accident. And the game's script is basically 1:1 for what we got on release, except Ending 1 isn't there (likely because of the fact that the Proto Ultima Alex ending was a "placeholder ending" as said by Andrew before) and if I remember correctly, the quest for the Boombox Ghost, which is why that scene isn't voice acted. The rewrite thing is a misquote from a Variety article where Andrew was actually talking about reworking the game to be better. Frankton, Sewers, Cave Dungeon, Essentia Dungeon were all redesigned for example, as well as the addition of new towns like Mt. Town and Flag Town.

No. Alex's premise as an extremely flawed character works too well for his own good. He's so flawed that he can't convince players to understand him. That's extremely problematic for a "postmodern" narrative: a character so hateful and badly executed that so many people misunderstand his narrative purposes. Even in this video, I find Michael more compelling. He's equally as screwed up as Alex, but he actually comes to understand what's going on and tries his best to get his friend out of his fantasy.

It's definitely specifically referencing the mainline games though. Because the 13th Vella says that she's a disappointment. I guess I should have included that pointing out that the 13th Vella says this referring to Final Fantasy XIII meaning it has to take place after that. Which is beyond 1999. Plus I mean it's perfect for an RPG hipster like him to say that non-numbered titles aren't "real Final Fantasy games" its so inline with the character.

Really good video. I’m definitely gonna check out your other Yiik videos now. I was surprised at how well thought out Alex actually is. It kind of feels like the game was self-sabotaged in some ways. Like how the creator said it’s a game about a guy who’s an asshole but he goes on an arc and gets better, when the game’s actually about a guy refusing to go on his arc and refusing to better himself. I actually noticed some of this stuff myself, but then wrote it off because of that comment. I remember getting to the Rory’s ghost part and thought it made more sense for it to be something Alex imagined Rory saying so he didn’t have to feel bad about Rory’s death and so he could avoid taking accountability. But then I remembered that comment from the creator and gave up on that train of thought.

It's true because that's Alex's perspective of the story. And the creator of the game talks about it in a very specific way because of its storytelling. And that he himself is a character in the story. (Something I'll get into in a future video)

@@hellkrai That makes sense. It’s just a shame it essentially got me to stop looking into the story and to just accept it at face value.

I don’t think that comment sabotaged the game lol I doubt even the majority of players who actually played the game know of that comment, not only that but the comment is true to the game, Andrew says Alex NEEDS to change he never does but to escape the cyclical misery he’s trapped in he needs to, the Creators of yiik are aware Alex doesn’t change they made the game lol, the reason people misinterpret the comment is either due to misreading or because video essays essentially gas light the people watching into thinking the Allansons have no idea what their own game is about, obviously I have no idea if you heard that comment in a video essay or saw the original clip either way the only person whose preventing you from engaging with yiik is you, although I am glad you’re open to hearing others interpretations of the story, apologies for the length I just dislike when people try to shift the blame to the creators to protect their own ego.

@@ilikegoblo4665 I saw the original clip. It’s possible I misheard or misinterpreted it, though. I have a hearing problem and often need people to repeat themselves 3 or 4 times before I fully understand what they’re trying to say to me.

@@xedusk nah it’s cool man, you aren’t the only person who misinterpreted that comment, sorry for going hard in the paint on that comment it’s just something that’s often brought up, I do hope you’re able to enjoy yiik, IV may be something you’re interested in, and theres a channel called “Alex Yiik” on KZbin that you can look up they show off bits of iv and have qna segments that you may find interesting. I hope you have a nice day

This is what happens when the narrative focuses only on the negative aspects of the character, Yes, the character turns out to be a deep and traumatic cautionary tale, but Alex's still an utterly obnoxious character who turns people off and makes them laugh at him rather than examining critical aspects of his life. The players are NOT ready or willing to understand the meta-narrative of Alex and you can't really blame them, because whenever the game tries to give crucial information, it either rambles like madmen, yells at the players, sneers at them, or downright patronizes them. In the end, it's still a "good idea, poor execution". Postmodernism is an extremely complex topic; the writers cannot invite casual audiences into metanarrative if they constantly treat them as idiots for buying and playing the game.

Jeez man calm down with all that projection, the game isn’t looking down on you at all, if you think about it the game is trusting your intelligence by not spoon feeding the story to you.
