This or the 60 is my dream yacht. Loads of space, no worries about where to fuel. And a pretty great profile for a catamaran. I was reading that the 60 even had a kite-wing sail. A definite home on the water. Thanks for the tour Nick!

@@norarivkis2513 Same, the 62's are beautiful. I'd probably make the starboard aft cabin a separate lounge or workshop. Live in the owners cabin up top and still have 3 full suites for guests. I keep thinking about the regular 80 but I don't think I could manage it without help and I feel like finding a place to haul it out would be a bit harder to find and expensive as hell.

Thanks Nick. Yes, I’ve been one of “those people” who were asking for this tour. It’ll never happen, but this is absolutely my dream yacht. The technology is amazing, and as batteries improve, the capabilities will as well. If I’m not mistaken, a Silent 55 has done a trans-Atlantic crossing.

It has but if you watch the captain's interview they had the generator on 24/7 (to generate enough power to cruise 24 hours a day) so that suggests the hull is capable but the solar power system is lazy-bay not globetrotter.

The carbon fuels used to build this boat far out exceeds the amount of energy it "saves" being electric. It's just a talking point for the owner to make them feel "green" and climate friendly.

@@darthkek1953 They set out in Feb into head winds and swells with a full crew to go to a Florida boat show so they had to keep to a time table . The motors were weaker back then 135w and they were using all systems cooking and heating air con. They still didnt use much fuel in the generators and they dont run full time they recharge/top up then switch off till they drop to a pre set. Then if solars not enough the generator cuts in again. Theres also the option of deploying an automated parra kite sail to assist in crossings 😎. If you need to run flat out the generator can support the constant draw.. Fold up booster panels could be placed on the fore deck sunning area or aft. 🤔 BYD blade cells are likely to be even safer and have better performance but the real jump will come with the switch to Na cells .. that need no Li or the other rare metals ...in fact they use Al so you save wt and cost over even Copper. 😎 As well as increased capacity and draw. The motors are virtually maintainance free and guaranteed for a number of years .. The generators sighted in the other hull tech compartment. So its quiet even running and runs at optimum performance not having to slow down or come under sudden transmission loads. The whole vessel is thoroughly insulated from heat and cold...as well as being well passively ventilated.

@@Brandon-ww9rk I don't know if anyone is buying a battery powered yacht to call it a green choice. Should've gone with a sailboat at that point. But it is a self-sustained boat and that is a good talking point imo.

@@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 that's a massive wall of text and I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just standing by the statement of fact that - to my knowledge - this company has yet to have a transatlantic sailing on solar power alone. Yes yes yes, "reasons". Perhaps one day they will do a full solar-only no-diesel crossing. But that day has not yet been arrived at.

It's been so interesting to watch the development of both solar panels and batteries. For a number of years the panel's efficiency was well ahead of the battery's capability to store and distribute the power in a relatively cost effective manner. But now that these two technologies have advanced greatly and are now advancing together, boats such as this are becoming even more viable. I can see the batteries reducing in size and weight and increasing in storage capacity while solar panels increase in efficiency. It's going to make boats such as this more and more viable. But even now, there's nothing missing in comfort and capability with this particular boat. Great boat, great tour.
@BadYossa
@BadYossa 2 жыл бұрын
Solar panels are, at best, around 30% effective in their ability to turn captured photons into electricity. Not trolling, but curious about your statement re their efficiency and battery technology being the bottleneck.
@davidfmelbourne3473
@davidfmelbourne3473 2 жыл бұрын
@@BadYossa Certainly don't read it as trolling. Although the efficiency of solar panels has only increased from about 18% to (as you say) at best around 30%, the prices of these panels have dropped dramatically (about 90% in the last 25 years). Battery technology has taken a similar jump in affordability in terms of price, storage capacity and size. Hence the comment 'in a relatively cost effective manner;. Because of research into new battery technologies this is likely to accelerate too.
@sailingonthoughts9594
@sailingonthoughts9594 Жыл бұрын
@@davidfmelbourne3473 The problem is at the current rate of efficiency it still won't be able to sustain cruising without using the diesel engine all the time. The battery only lasts for an hour with top speed on the e power+ option, the solar cells only produce 50-60kw per day which will take forever to charge up the 300kw battery. It's probably better to wait a few years considering this is all rather new and improvement in ship design even without drastic leaps in solar tech and just reasonable gains in battery tech will have a big impact on the overall viability of the ship.
@danielbateman6518
@danielbateman6518 2 жыл бұрын
With electric vehicle technology, one thing to keep in mind is that this is still probably a shadow of what can be accomplished. If you just look at Formula E racing, we've gone from requiring 2 cars to complete a full race due to battery and regeneration limitations, to a faster car that can complete a full race by itself with gen 2 and now with gen 3 we'll have a car that can do over 200mph and has such great regeneration it will do away with rear mechanical brakes. It's worth keeping in mind when looking at these Silent Catamarans. It's quite possible that either by breakthroughs in tech or small advancements or just more efficient manufacturing processes, there will one day be boats that can outdo this one in every way at more or less the same cost, maybe even cheaper. Certainly I think it's the way forward with sailing boats, to still use the wind on the sails as a primary source of locomotion, while generating power for the batteries through the propeller.
@delbancroft9339

If you read about the new batteries Telsa, Toyota and others are testing, they are talking 250% to 500% more power storage in smaller, lighter, and more stable batteries.
@Jacob-uk4kl

Still, with this boat you will probably only use really little electricity in it's lifetime, maybe, if it's possible for the boat to send power back to the grid, it can even generate more then it have used all in all. That would be a lot of money saved on fuel and electricity, and a good help for global warming. And maybe regulations for diesel boats will be tougher in the coming years, so maybe this boat will keep a high used price better compared to diesel boats.

Hi Nick, I think the reason for the height of the owners berth is because it goes up into the main deck a little, rather than staying in one of the pontoons. The downside of this is that you get more “slapping” under way. Of course most time on this sort of boat is at anchor and not on passage, so for most people it’s not a problem.

That is a beautiful boat. I am sure it will be one of the paradigms for future motor yachting. Batteries, motors and solar panels are all improving and the prices should be going down as well. They offer battery banks, motors and generators of different sizes. They even have a kite option (instead of sails). It seems the perfect boat for a cruising couple/family without the work and expenses of a sailing rig. It is obviously perfect for off grid living.

Fantastic! I've long been an advocate of electric boating; this catamaran is a fabulous proof of the concept. You mentioned it being a "grey" day and that's important. So many people think that blazing sunshine is essential for running solar panels. The reality is that all you really need is light. Bright is best but any light works, and, of course, if you have sufficient numbers of storage batteries, night running is no problem. There's an additional method of charging too but I haven't seen it used yet. That was a brilliant tour, as usual, you delved into just about everything - which of course, is why you've become so popular. A very, very impressive boat in every way, (I'm still confused about those raised beds), I'd like to be told the cost of the boats you review, that would be very useful to those of us who are not just "window-shopping". Once again, thank you for an excellent tour.....a look into the future perhaps? Cheers Nick

Hi Nick. Really interesting video. By the way, the occasional background noise (be it music playing or whatnot) isn't disturbing or distracting at all. Your narration comes through loud and clear. I think it might be more of an issue for you there in person than it is for those of us enjoying the video.

The Silent 60 Tri-Deck (enclosed) with 5 cabins is my dream boat. Great vessel for a family. With a Starlink satellite for connectivity you could effectively cruise the world continuously, following the seasons/sun and work remotely.

What a lot of space for a 55 foot boat. And silent, that would be very pleasant.

Oh man this catamaran is great. If I could afford a boat this would definitely be on the list to buy. I'm not normally a fan of catamarans, I'm more of a sail monohull guy but the fact that this cat is fully electric is amazing. I don't like gas powered boats due to having to rely on gas (especially with fuel getting so expensive) I'd rather rely on the good ole wind and have a motor as a back up incase. Electric is a game changer!

Most of these have a diesel generator to provide additional power (adds a couple o'knots to the top end) and to charge the batteries on grey days or at night.

Overall, they look to be a great boat. There are lots of things to like: Basically unlimited range at low speeds, generator backup for when you need to discharge the batteries. It would be great as a liveaboard with plenty of space, more than enough kitchen and living space. Would prefer lower beds, but like you mentioned, the high beds were a customer option for that boat. If I was going to liveaboard, I'd re-purpose one cabin as an office/games room :) There are a few things that I'm not so keen on though: 1. The lower helm is way too far back from the windows, and seems like too big of a compromise (both in terms of sea-keeping and compromising the space in the room), for the sake of easier cabin access. I'd much rather have the helm right up at the front window, so you get a better view, and quicker access to the door. 2. I'd also prefer a helm side door, but realise that it may not be possible with the configuration of these boats. The front door option is fine, so long as the helm is close enough (see 1). 3. I'd still like a wheel on the lower helm, but that's just me. 4. Would like an outdoor grill somewhere - if you're going to be in sunny places, may as well enjoy the outdoors! I had heard (don't know if it's true or not) that Silent Yachts had had a quality control problem, but hopefully anything like that would just be teething issues, and sorted out in later hulls. Of course, I'd still need to win the lottery to be able to afford one!

The lower helm seems way back from the front of the yacht. The interior still needs some design flourishes. It just comes off as a beige boathouse not a luxury yacht. I love the solar powered mantra and the idea of fuel-free days at sea!
