I saw this upload and I'm like, what? Didn't he upload this before? Man I remember back in high school when I watched you post the original Aqualung cover back in 2011. Seeing Mr. Butter at the end of the video I thought it was a cool touch at the end. I would've never imagined at the time you were going through such a horrible thing like throat cancer. I hope you've beaten that horrible cancer and even if you're fighting it now; I truly wish you nothing but the best. Seeing this reupload with better camera and audio quality, I think all of us long time followers would love to see you possibly do newer covers of songs you've already done; just food for thought. Seeing you look at the camera and do the "Hey!" again made me happy; I remember loving that part of the video. Hope you have an incredible one!

@@TJH3113 I just saw this comment. Going by the choice of notes and the walking 'swing' bass line - I would say it was Cornick. I had read that it was Cornick who played on it before he was let go.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels pretty certain Glenn played bass on this track. It seems to be totally done in his style. And I read that JH-H was rusty when he joined the group, and this bass track was played by a seasoned and fluid bass player.

That guitar solo section is one of the great moments in prog rock history, the interaction between the walking bass and the guitar. Kind of a preview of what Geddy and Alex would bring us a few years later. What's that weird beep at 5:33, though? I thought it was my doorbell at first, until I ran the video back over it to check.

Seriously these videos are some of the most impressive bass playing I've ever heard. Your tone out of these Guild basses is so perfect that it inspired me to buy an SB-202 like yours. Now if only I had the talent to go with it! Lol. The middle section of Aqualung with the walking bass is MY favorite tone ever. My SB-202 will be candy apple red. And I'm going to have a black abalone pickguard made for it. And it already has the Babicz bridge upgrade.
@TJH31134 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for the very kind words. Congratulation on the Guild. I prefer the sound using the only the bridge p/u, if that's any help. I found that the output and tone really suffered when both p/u's are selected. I've had a couple of pick guards made by "PickguardPlanet". They have all the oddball templates and they do nice work, though the ordering process is a bit cumbersome. Good on the Babicz upgrade. I've done it too all of my Guilds.

Just seeing this. You did this before. (But this has better sound). This is perfect example of a precisely orchestrated bass part and you got it all! The placement of the harmonies, the varying walking lines that are mostly arpeggios with displaced rhythms and logical voice leading -- it's all almost too perfect not to be worked out beforehand. This had to be a tough one to figure out. There seems to be some discrepancy as to who played bass on the original. Glen Cornick claims he did, but Jeffry Hammond is credited and it seems more his style. Hammond was an interesting talent -- mainly a painter (and a very good one) who supposedly played "hobby bass" but Anderson preferred his personality to Cornicks so, Glen was out, Jeffry was in. (!!!) And man, talk about rising to the occasion! I wonder if all of his parts were written by Anderson and he just executed them to a tee. But perhaps Hammond just had that clean structured approach. His style seems "neater" then Cornick's. (whose playing I love by the way). Anyway, your take inspired me to go back and work out some of those parts. Well done as usual!
@TJH31132 жыл бұрын
Thank you Nelson. To me, it sounds more like Cornick than Hammond. I thought that Hammond’s sound and style was more similar to Glascock’s.
@NelsonMontana12342 жыл бұрын
@@TJH3113 The "later day" Tull bass parts did seem extremely tight and well rehearsed. The "walking lines" in Aqualung are very Cornick-esque. I wouldn't be surprised if Anderson didn't give him album credit out of spite. There seemed to be some unfortunate resentment there. At any rate, great job, and now I'm going to check out your Glascock covers. : )

That Mr. Butter appearance was perfect since he's the same color as the bass haha.

I know, he was a wonderful, creamy-peach color.

Nice! I see you are using B after G, for instance on walking bass formula start. Isn't that Bb? (sounds like the chord is Gm)
@TJH31136 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I agonized over this for years. I would always play the Bb because the guitar was obviously playing a Gm, but something about it never sounded right. When I did my first cover of this song, I referenced an isolated bass track and discovered that he is actually playing a major scale over a minor chord. The bass is pretty murky sounding, so it doesn't really stand out.

As always solid playing Troy! Any chance you could give Wishbone Ash - Sometime World, a try?

I just lost my 15 year old dog. I feel your pain. I’m sure I would have loved Butter
@TJH31136 жыл бұрын
Aw, I'm very sorry for your loss. Butter was an incredible cat and really deserved more time. He lived a very hard life before we got him and it was great to see him blossom after we took him in. He was the sweetest grump you'd ever meet.

Another awesome lesson, thnx. Out of curiosity, do you by any chance own any old school Kramer bass guitars?
@TJH31135 жыл бұрын
Thank you. No, unless you consider the NS2A's Kramers. Technically, they are.

Yet another fantastic cover but with quite a different tone to your original video but you kept the ‘hey” two minutes in. How are you recording the videos nowadays? I got back from holiday in the US a few days and thought of you as I was flying over New York on the way back to the UK. A slightly different route to the one I was expecting thanks to the storms on the east coast and Delta cancelling my flight from DC. It’s all part of the adventure. Keep up the great work.

How to you learn all the bass tracks you play? Do you learn by ear or do you read the actual notations?

I got it from Pickguard Planet and can't remember the name of the color. It looks like they've discontinued a number of them. They have a lot of templates for oddball instruments like this.
