Nice cover and I could not agree more about your comments regarding Elliot Easton - such a treasure! I love The Cars because they were the perfect storm of talent from every member of the band. Thanks for doing this cover and I especially appreciate the extended play at the end without the background music which made it clearer for me to understand how to play. I've played guitar for many years and now trying my hand at bass and this was a fun song to try. Thanks again for the video!

@@TJH3113Thank you for sharing. Great songs as well. I was playing out during that time and I wish I could’ve played those songs. Lido Shuffle is one of my favorite songs ever. I named my last dog Lido. Female…but I didn’t care. Once in awhile I miss playing in front of people but being a drummer it’s just too much lugging it all around. What was with that guy dancing in front of your guitarist? I bet he was like “get away dude!!” Lol

Hi sir. I’ve been on your channel since I was a small boy, I think around 12-13. Your chops are/were impeccable, and I found you have a good taste in basses. Makes sense you’re a collector. I didn’t really know where to class my area of the hobby. You’ve had all of my favorites 😭
@TJH31133 күн бұрын
Hello, it's nice to make your acquaintance. I wouldn't call myself a collector. I just went through a phase where I got my hands on every bass I had when I was younger (the ones I really liked, that is) and a number of other basses that I always wanted to play, but never got the chance. I've since sold most of them. Even though I loved them all, the experience helped me to distill the things that really matter to me most in a bass.

@TJH31134 күн бұрын
Thank you. The only time I like a Rickenbacker is when I don't have one. When I do have one, I'm reminded of their many faults. The Hipshots are a drop-in replacement, but have their own flaws. Babicz also makes drop-in saddles, but I don't have any experience with them.

Younger for sure, but the "skinnier" was from losing around 50 pounds from treatment for throat cancer. My doctor said that most people did not regain all the weight they lost during treatment but, somehow, I did. It was nice while it lasted though. Thanks and Merry Christmas to you as well!

This gentleman is an excellent bass player. That acknowledged, Tony used a pick for this song. It gave the bass the unique percussive sound because of the hard-edged attack. No cover should be attempted without one, IMHO. He also played a fretless, giving it the smooth transition sounds. Less impactful than the sound of the pick, and MUCH more expensive to replicate, but also important to recreate the original.
@TJH31135 күн бұрын
Thank you. I appreciate your observations, they are all correct, but my focus has always been on learning the songs I cover as closely as I can to the way they were recorded... in terms of the notes played, not necessarily the techniques, tone, or equipment used. I'm just not that versatile. I can't play with a pick, or slap, or tap.
@cheesedude17335 күн бұрын
@@TJH3113 makes sense to me. As I began my comment, you appear to have an abundance of talent. Your timing, one of the most important things a bassist can bring to any ensemble, seems to be rock solid.

Troy - great playing as always….i had not heard this song before but when I heard the opening guitar riff I immediately thought Uli Jon Roth. The time you get is amazing … do you have an updated vid on your signal chain … including what strings you are partial to these days?
@TJH31135 күн бұрын
So, that's Uli's trademark sound and style? It's definitely unique. Everything in my setup is essentially the same, but I use a Genzler Magellan Preamp sometimes instead of a SansAmp (this was the Genzler). I've been using D'Addario EXL220's for many years now. I use a slightly heavier gauge on this bass - EXL170's. I love them. They go on bright, but not too bright, and keep their life for quite some time. Used to be able to get a two-pack from Amazon for $24, but they're up to $34 now. JustStrings.com has a two-pack for $29.
@patrickgil35895 күн бұрын
@ I really am only familiar with his work from the live at budokan album where he does a bit of singing too … check out Polar Nights … but he’s definitely more bluesy and groove oriented than say Michael Schenker or Matthias Jabs … thanks for the rundown of your signal chain… I’ll have to look into the EXLs !!!

Ok. So I saw Mike Watt open for Primus at Roseland Ballroom. As he was playing this, people started throwing beer bottles, coins and various trash at him. I was on the rail ans so happy to be seeing him live and it became the most violent show I ever saw. Mike went off after about 40 min and Primus came on and people started beating the ever living crap out of each other. We made it out alive, but saw a dude holding his eye in and saw another guy fly through the air like Gonzo being launched out of a cannon. Thanks for posting this and for coming to my Ted Talk. As always, great job Troy.
