I used to play this when I was 9 or 10 years old, back in the early 80's. I spent hours not only trying to win, but simply wandering around just for fun. I really spent hours playing and getting lost in this game. No wonder that years after this, I became addicted to the Zelda series. I haven't seen this game since I was a child. Now as a 40 year old, I came across an Atari Flashback console in summer of 2013. I saw that it included "Adventure" and immediately bought it. Upon playing the game again for the first time 30 years, I was amused at how simple it is. Not as elaborate or exciting as I remembered. But that didn't matter. It is like a comfort food. It brings back memories of those late Friday nights, laying on a bean bag in the dark basement, playing Atari games and playing vinyl records all night long. On a side note, upon rediscovering "Adventure" again, I decided to look up some reviews of it. I get a little ticked off at kids that were born in the 90's or 2000's dissing this game. Or, on the other end of the spectrum, the kids that reviewed it as if they were there in the 80's playing it (but their reviews are plagiarized versions of real reviews by the now 40 and 50 year olds who were actually there). Anyways, it was great to visit my childhood again. Now, where can I get an "Adventure" t-shirt?

Craig Spiker - Your comment is now 4 years old but thought I'd still reply. I did the same thing. Played the heck out of this game, as well as others. One thing I loved to do in that game when I was bored and beating it wasn't at the top of my priority list, was to get eaten by a dragon at the same time the bat picked it up, and would get a tour of the different areas of the game. LOL!

I found the Easter egg many times, but didn't know it said anything. I think I was only 5 or so. It's been a long time but I think to get around the fucking bat I would grab him and toss him in a big castle and lock it. Anyone else confirm this? Most memorable moment: Dragon ate me, bat had lance thing and killed the dragon. Bat dropped the lance and then picked up the dead dragon with me in it's somatic and flew us around for a few seconds. Memories....

Note that it's also done in less computer memory space than most thumbnails for videos take up. I mean the squares in the "Related Videos" tab... They originally wanted to do a text adventure similar to "The colossal cave" (which later became Zork) but the Atari 2600 was too limited for even a very stripped down text adventure. It was an amazing game!

Atari's refusal to give the programmers credit (because they were paranoid that they'd be head-hunted by other companies) was the sole reason most of them left to form Activision, the first ever third party developer. Which in turn made loads of other companies want to make Atari games for free and thus saturate the market with shit and eventually bring about the collapse of the gaming industry in the US. So Atari fucked themselves up by being dicks.

@Guru Larry Gaming: "Atari's refusal to give the programmers credit (because they were paranoid that they'd be head-hunted by other companies) was the sole reason most of them left to form Activision, the first ever third party developer." That, and the fact that Atari's game-creators at the time got salary only and not a penny of profit from sales. Like if a game sold millions, the game's creator would get, say, $20,000 and ALL of the rest of millions their game made would go to Atari, Inc.

It was their success in 1981 that made everybody on Wall Street want to invest in making Atari games. They might have survived the Crash if they hadn't sabotaged the release of the 5200 in 1982 by selling 2-5 million more 2600s with Pac-Man. Then they manufactured millions of cartridges that didn't sell. One cartridge, box, instructions and catalog might not cost that much but multiply by 2 million and that's a loss. The retailers blame the 3rd party developers, but Atari and Imagic (and Activision?) were still taking back games that didn't sell in 1983, which destroyed Imagic because they didn't have any hits in 1983.

It's freakin epic when the bat gets the sword then it flies around and kills the dragons for you...i've had it happen. Also, after having been eaten by a dragon, I've managed to escape thanks to the bat. I've also been trapped inside a dead dragon, which totally sucks. I'm guessing Adventure barely predates Gauntlet, although it is years ahead of Zelda...if there was another adventure style game before this, it is very obscure and not well known. The epic flashing when you return the chalice alone makes it worth playing.

This is my favorite Atari2600 game. A nice tip for dealing with those bats. Capture the bat, and throw it in the yellow castle ASAP. Make sure it it moving in an upward motion. It will infinitely look inside the castle.

Found out that for game 3 the black key is never in the white castle. Also 1/29 chance (3%) that the gold key is locked in the gold castle. If he'd numbered the rooms differently, (e.g. making gold castle 1) he could have avoided this (by putting the key in rooms 2-29). If something's outside the castles it doesn't really matter which of 19 rooms it starts in so half of them could be lower numbers than the black castle and other half higher numbers than the white (inside black and white castles are sequential room numbers for the chalice). Then you could define white key in rooms 1-15 and black key in rooms 16-29. Anyway I used to imagine games 4 & 5 from the rulebook which said the evil wizard stole the chalice, so you have to deal with him. I also liked the idea of having a room that you can't enter, but can put the magnet in to get an object out.

@sandal_thong86312 жыл бұрын
I guess it's more like a stile, used to climb over fences between pastures. You can use it to get to the tops of the castle and back, with black being only one-way, but there's nothing to do there. Since he glitched and made it so 1/29 chance the gold key is in the gold castle, there should be a secret entrance there if you have the chalice.

Yep, it's not so much about GFX (although no one complained about the GFX at the time), it's all in the gameplay. _Adventure_ [1980; Atari 2600 VCS] is rich in loads of it. What a Classic; a video-game for the annuls and the ages!

The easy way to deal with dragons was to maneuver to the back of their head. They would have to reposition themselves so that you were near their mouth, in order to gobble you. Keep circling around to the back of his head and you could make the dragon gradually move off to the right, giving you room to get through tight spots. My cousin and I used to give our characters in Dungeons & Dragons experience points when we played this game. (We were a tad Monty Haul.)
