In this video I show you the two different filters I have in my aquaponics system so far. The swirl filter works well but the mechanical filter could be better.

Hey nice Set Up for Filter👍👍👍

Try stuffing a small mesh nylon type (pantyhose) material in the middle of the mesh box. It will help with all of those smaller solids. Great work!

thank you And ya that would have been great to do but have already changed the filters and a lot of my system. This is the latest update on how the system looks kzbin.info/www/bejne/qaGwemimrcyJkMU

you need a stall chamber from the swirl filter discharge,it will make the swirl work better .

Do you mean like just a larger diameter pipe around where the water leaves the swirl filter? My filters are different now. Not done setting them up yet though. Any suggestion on this one as well? kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2W8ZGypaN2gl6s thanks

Hello. Where do we buy the big black media pads?? And, what are they listed as (name). So much on Amazon is sponge.. I want to grow a plant wall on black pads. Thx!

They are called matala mat There are different colors which account to different densities, which is for different size particulate. Here is an amazon link to it: amzn.to/3X4lQof

I'm a little confused. Isn't the mechanical filter supposed to be the first filter coming from the fish tank and then the biofilter? To me, this seems as though you have two different mechanical filter systems. I may be wrong, I'm just confused as to why you wouldn't filter out the solids using the mechanical filter first and then the swirl filter.

The way this is setup is correct. Maybe I didn't explain it the best. Also this is an older setup. (you can check out the more recent videos on the filtration here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/pmGlY59ped6Fq5Y&ab_channel=vonponics) So to answer your question. This specific filtration system that you see in the video is set up with a swirl filter first and then from the swirl filter it overflows in to a mechanical filter (which also acts as a biological filter). The swirl filter is a solids removal filter, and has the main purpose of catching larger solids. It then overflows into the next filter. Which is a type of mechanical filter, and is for further catching solids (primarily smaller particles). And because of the surface area on the filter mesh in this filter it also acts as a biological filter. This design in this video can be improved upon, however it is setup correctly in terms of the stages of filtration. Typically with a DIY filter you will have multiple stages of filtration. First some sort of settling chamber for bigger solids, after that a biological filter (like a moving bed bio filter) which is for breaking down fish waste from ammonia into nitrates. Then final would be a finer solids catchment filter. You can have multiples of each on a setup if needed. But that would be the basics of it. Hope that helps clarify
