To Bryson: It strikes me that it would probably be a good idea to insulate the warmed water line between the solar collector and the aquaponic system, as well as possibly the long arms of the aquaponic system as well, to conserve as much of the gathered heat as possible. Also, it might be a good idea to figure out a temperature activated cut-off switch for the pump, as well, to keep the temperature from going too high, in the event of an extended warm, clear period.

Any of your tubing that is on or near the ground could be covered with compost, mulch, etc., and then a layer of plastic to help not only maintain the heat you captured but add to it. The breaking down and decomposing of compost generates heat that the tubing will pick up and carry for you too. The van is looking great and I can't wait until Ellie gets to decorate it. Good job on making a little reading nook Shae.

You are basically using insulator to transfer heat and that's why you have melting. You have much more heat input then output and this causes heat to be accumulated to the heater input and eventually it will cause melting. What you have to do is to is to achieve as higher heat exchange as possible. You should try copper piping with black paint coating instead of using rubber/plastic hosing.
@Donna-go4es4 жыл бұрын
Could you use the pool noodles that you get at the dollar store to insulate the water lines so they don't freeze? Might be cheaper than the insulated ones plumbers use.

Hmmmm ....... curious ...... Bryson, would the water cool down too much in the winter as it travels the distance to the aquaponics? Love the idea. I had a friend that used coils rolled inside a compost pile that ran from a pond to the pile then underground to the house. It got pretty hot. Cabinet is coming along real nice. I like your scissor stool, Garen. ooooo... I like the little corner nook Shae.... real nice.

Thanks for another great weekly peek. Garren and Ellie depending on how heavy that cabinet is you should make sure weight in opposite side is even..a bed, or fold down seat something to balance so it doesn't make van easier to tip.

To regulate the water temperature of the aquaponic system you could have a T at the pump outlet one side going to the roof coil and one side bypassing it, both comming back to a shower thermostatic mixer then back to tank.

For many years I worked for the local High School Adult School. I drove big band with lift and wheelchair equipment. We too would remove certain elements from the vans to haul things that did weight a bit. By removing the lift mechanisms you freed up poundage. Some older Van's may be under breaked so always give yourself a little extra breaking space when driving. You're going to be fine.

I run an exhaust fan for a hot upstairs storeroom directly off a solar panel. It's amazing how much the speed varies when clouds pass by. Make sure your system has a check valve so it doesn't drain back every time the pump slows down. Best way to engineer a water system is with the pump at the source PUSHING the water through the system. Diaphragm pumps like that are pretty good at priming, but pump much more efficiently by pushing rather than sucking. Mounting it at or below the water level is ideal. You might be losing a lot of your heat on the long run to/from the panels. Look at the insulated double tubes used for outdoor boilers. Adding glazing over the coils will bring much higher temps but another reason for the check valve, if the pipes are dry or the water still, the sun will melt the plastic. Another way to prevent winter freezing is a geo system, where you have a run of tubing buried deeply, ideally with an insulation cap above, that takes advantage of the ground temperature averaging around 55 degrees year round. Also works to limit maximum temp in summer. Whether you're pumping out water at 35f or 85f, the return water is around 55f. I saw the goats eyeing the new stuff over their pen. They can be jerks, I hope they don't manage to jump up to try to bite or otherwise damage the hose. Garen, beautiful looking cabinet, but now you feel why RVs are built with 1X lumber and thin ply paneling. Weight really matters on mobile builds for both fuel economy and handling/performance. Stationary furniture you can afford to overbuild Also I've learned the hard way it's worth pulling shelves back out and fine trimming them instead of hammering them tightly in place. It can push the whole piece out of square and sooner/later the force will start popping the carefully glued and fastened joints. Careful those knobs don't hook the hammer loop on your work clothes one day! In addition to ledges for the shelves, make sure to use RV not household door catches. I remember my maiden voyage in a used RV where several weren't latching well anymore; maaan, stuff was falling out and those doors were constantly wagging and slamming the whole way.
