Many take the simplicity of fitting pvc together for granted...until they experience a leak or unexpected decoupling. Thank you for the little tips and the ‘why’ of what you do. Less mishaps is good for everyone.👍🏽👍🏽

My first lot failed when I first started due to dodgy advice from a forum expert. Hope this helps others not have the same mishap. 😉 😉 Cheers SLFYSH.

I find doing a quarter turn of the fitting during press fit prevents any leaks and ensures complete bond.

Hay Rob, your invention inspired me!! I was using one of those filter attachments that are used in big home aquariums. I had it on the intake pipe to my pump and could not get the muck filtered through from the bottom of my pond. After seeing what you had devised I've been wondering how I could match that as I don't have anything similar. Then I thought of using a small soft drink plastic bottle, cutting it just where the neck bells out and cutting three short feet onto it. Placed it on the end of the pumps suction pipe and, oh wow!! It's amazing the dirt that was picked up! In fact it picked up a couple of small twigs that had been blown in from a recent wind storm and got caught in the elbow bend. I had to stop the pump and clean them out. Great content Rob, thanks

Hi Rob, thanks again for making everything so clear. On min 10:20 you say that the pipe on the solid filter need to be below the fish tank water surface but wont it overflow if that's so?
@RobsAquaponics5 жыл бұрын
Hey Juan. It needs to be below the fish tank level so the water will flow to the lower point. As long as you have a large enough outflow pipe in the filter there won't be a backup to cause an overflow. 👍

Is it better to have the uptake of the water in the middle of the fish tank?
@RobsAquaponics4 жыл бұрын
Hey Tara. Sorry I missed this. Best to have it in the centre of round tanks as that's where most of the solids will hopefully be drawn to. You might be best to have yours off to one side as the waste tends to get trapped in corners of squarer shaped tanks. Hope the plans are coming along well. 👍

What size pipe do you recommend between the IBC, Filter, and moving bed bio filter to sump/media beds?
@RobsAquaponics5 жыл бұрын
Hi Alan. That really depends on your flow rate. I've used 50mm/2" for anything over 1500lph/395gph if that helps any. 👍

@@RobsAquaponics Thanks Rob. I appreciate your response. I've been collecting all the parts and pieces and I hope to start plumbing it in in the next week or two. I have 3 IBC totes on hand and in the process of rounding up a few plastic drums for my filters. Thanks again!

Instead of priming the PVC, could you give the surfaces a light sanding to clean them up and offer some more surface area for the glue?
@UncannySense5 жыл бұрын
it just cleans the surface. the glue itself is more of a weld bond. A light find sanding is ok.

I follow your channel and this encouraged me to make my own system, but there are some points I want to know before I start like Does the system smell smell fish and how to calculate the number of plants to the number of fish and what depends on it?
@RobsAquaponics5 жыл бұрын
The system doesn't really smell at all unless you're cleaning a filter & then that's not that bad at all. A faint fish compost smell is about it. Plant to fish ratios are really plant to fish feed ratios & you'll get different answers from different sources. I've found that a single IBC fish tank system with 36 fish in it can run 3 x 300L grow beds. You won't have enough nutrients in the system to plant out all 3 beds off the bat but as the fish consume more feed more plants can be added. Cheers

Hey Rob, got a ??? about growing Pak Choy? My first time growing this beautiful veggie for mainly soups. When they start producing long shoots with flower tops, do I let it continue to grow or snip it off just above the tallest leaf? Thanks in advance Mate!
@RobsAquaponics5 жыл бұрын
Hi Don. I'd harvest them as soon as you see any sign of a flower forming. The reason being is that the plant will start to put all it's energy into the flower & not the greens. Mind you, the flowers are also edible but you get more bang for your buck from the greens.👍 Cheers mate & have a top one.

Greeting from Indonesia.. You are my inspiration Rob... Just curious, are Your new SLO work better than the old one? I notice that You put pipe on near bottom of IBC tote. Why don’t You use the IBC drain valve as SLO? Thank you
@mattdawson70555 жыл бұрын
Because his using a small drum as a filter you need to have a slow flow go through it to give the solids time to drop to the bottom of the filter.
@RobsAquaponics5 жыл бұрын
Hi Yoko. The drain from the IBC is harder to screen off from the fish. The smaller SLO will also allow for a slower flow rate which means a smaller filter drum can be used as @Matt Dawson mentioned below. 👍👍 Hope that helps some.

When i first built my system i had racked my brain for ideas of how to use a 20L as a solids filter but still have a high flow rate to the fish ended up cutting my wooden work bench in half so i could fit a 200L drum. You have impressed me alot with this one mate 👍

Hi Rob, why did you bother to glue the pipe on the inside (under water) of the tank ? :) I never bother to glue when there is no possibility of a leak. Did you have something that you were concerned about for that joint? great video as always, cheers from Tokyo

Maybe it's more about making sure they stay together and not get pushed apart? I don't know I'm just guessing.

I have had drains not work as effectively due to fitting becoming loose & reducing the suction from the base. It would also be a HUGE PAIN to fix if it were to happen with a tank full of fish & water. 😉 Glad you enjoyed the clip. Am popping over there this week to do some more work on it so will be another clip coming soon. Cheers & happy growing. 👍🌱🌱
