For painting plastic, you will get better bonding of the paint to plastic by "flaming" the plastic before painting. flaming involves simply passing a gas flame over the plastic, this causes a temporary (about 24 hour) molecular change to the surface allowing the paint to adhere to the plastic more efficiently.

You can also use automotive adhesion promoters. It's used before printing and painting automotive plastics.

G'day Rob. Great video. Just thought I would mention something my research is showing: even the most basic ambient lighting greatly inhibits the enzyme used by nitrifying organisms (or at least the ones that convert ammonia to nitrite). The experiment is in a controlled environment graphing ammonia and nitrite concentrations as measured by a spectrophotometer using Nessler's reagents (so like an API test kit but measuring the output as an exact number). Just leaving fluorescent tubes on for 6-8 hrs a day in an otherwise darkened room has greatly reduced the nitrification rate, when compared to a totally darkened environment. I should point out that the middle of a grow bed is likely as dark as you could ever need, and also that the media volume required for effective nitrification is much lower than I had initially intuited. Another thing I have discovered is that the same organisms can process ammonia efficiently even in fairly oxygen-poor environments (as low as 2mg/l). Keep up the great work mate.
@RobsAquaponics5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that mate. I leaned early on about how little is needed from Mr Paul. I don't like to suggest folks in the backyard environment try it as most can't pay the level of attention needed or have adequate solids filtration. Have seen things turn very ugly (& smelly) very quickly when folks try to grow big out of the gate. How are the studies going? Cheers.
@AdamTait-hy2qh5 жыл бұрын
@@RobsAquaponics Yeah for sure Rob. The more filtration you have, the happier and safer your fish will be. In high-density commercial aquaculture, almost all solids are removed automatically by something like micron steel mesh drum filters and automatic spray cleaners - and for good reason. When it builds up, that stuff gets nasty without heavy aeration. Regards my studies, I am so close to graduating with a science degree in aquaculture that I can almost taste it. But by Apollo, is it a marathon. So. Many. Years.

Beginning to learn a bit with each clip. Still in the dark as to how phosphorus, potassium, and the other nutrients are produced or added to the system. I am sure the answer lies somewhere in your library of clips.
@RobsAquaponics5 жыл бұрын
I have mentioned it in passing a few times but will give you the short version now to save your searching Joe. 😉 P will be in the fish feed along with a small amount of potassium. Most folks that grow fruiting plants will supplement K while buffering the pH or you can also add things like kelp which have a decent amount of it as well. Hope that helps mate. Cheers.

Hi Rob! Thank you sharing all your precious knowledge with us. Thanks to your videos I've started my small aquaponics blue barrel system: 180L FT, bucket radial filter, half blue barrels (1 dwc and 1 media bed),22 juvenile tilapias. It's been 2 months and still no nitrates?! Could it be my poor flow rate from radial filter? I've made the mistake of using 32mm pipe. It fills up a 1L bottle in 9secs. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
@RobsAquaponics5 жыл бұрын
Hi there. It may just be that the plants you have in there are taking up all the nitrate. Do they look green & healthy? Cheers
@jbl22705 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your reply.No they look very nutrient deficient as the lettuces are purplish turning brown, and other soft vegetables have yellow leaves with green veins. Swiss chards and bok choy experience stunted growth. I've added a cap of Seasol. Then less than 1tsp of Ca,K,Mg and Fe in the following ratios 2:10:5:10. Only plants doing ok is my cherry tomato and thyme.
@RobsAquaponics5 жыл бұрын
@@jbl2270 I think there is just a lack of nutrients in the system. Maybe cut back on the number of plants you have until yo see an improvement n the remaining ones then slowly add more.

@RobsAquaponics Жыл бұрын
They don't have to be noisy. You do hear the emptying of the grow bed a few times an hour if they are set up to flood & drain. There are ways to dampen that sound as well. 👍
@jimgreenwood5360 Жыл бұрын
The rust will get worse and eventually rust fallout in the sump will harm the fish. Monitor with a strong magnet over the floor of the sump. Then you can remove any rusty fallout before it causes problems.

Hi Rob, is there an other way you could grow things like rosemary or rubarb?? in aquaponics?
@RobsAquaponics5 жыл бұрын
They will still grow fine in there but you just need to be aware that their roots could cause issues after 2-3 years. It would be easy enough to clean the media out & pop the plants back in if you find you're having issues with the roots collecting too much solids. I think the advice that some give where they say you can plant & forget is wrong so like to caution folks not to become complacent. Hope that helps.
@waynetodd22772 жыл бұрын
What do you do with the fish in the winter time. When the water freezes over.
@RobsAquaponics2 жыл бұрын
It doesn't here as we don't get more than a few hours a year with temp's below freezing in the subtropics. Many folks I know that live in cold regions will either harvest their fish & drain the system or move the fish inside.

Why do you recommend plants with quick turnaround times? I was planning on making an indoor aquaponic system so that I can grow plants to be multiple years old.
@RobsAquaponics2 жыл бұрын
Mainly because folks tend to find my channel when they are new to aquaponics. Some have seen others with beds with tomatoes so plant a dozen out in an IBC bed. 6 months later they're getting nitrite spikes & have all sorts of issues with water flow in the beds being retarded by roots through the media & choaking the water flow. I have helped dozens of folks that have overplanted similar to that scenario over the years so tailor most of my content to them. I'm not saying you can't but just think it's the best way for folks getting into aquaponics to start out. 👍👍
