I have ammonia in my tap water. What would you recommend? According to the API master test kit, approximately ..75 ppm. Given that my tank reading is about 3ppm. I'm gathering that if I cut back on feeding and do water changes, eventually the bacteria will catch up.

So I have an ammonia spike of 2 ppm. I have a 3 1/2 gallon tank with a female betta and two mystery snails. I have an Anubis and a moss ball for plants. I have a whisper filter, an air stone, a water heater. I don’t overfeed my betta fish and I just give zucchini to my snails. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. Please help!

I had an amomia spike so I added a few handfuls of blue m&m's to the tank. It didn't seem to help much at all. I waited another hour then added some more, seemed to actually make it worse as half my fish had started floating upsidedown. All I had left after that was some green ones and a couple of orange so I had no othet option but to put them in along with a few mentos. I couldn't believe it but it cleared up the water almost instantly and once the mentos had finished bubbling away all the fish went back to swimming normally. Thanks for the great advice Cory, I truly had serious doubts about putting candy in my tank but it really did save my bacon. Cheers buddy.

That has to be the clearest, easy to to understand, explanation to ammonia spikes, I have come across. I have to add, I have been keeping tropical fish for over 40 yrs. You sir, are a godsend to aquarists, new & old in this hobby (obsession lol) Providing an idiots guide is not offensive, it's the best way to educate when applied correctly and with respect! Well done!

I’m so glad the guy I met at petco told me to follow your channel. My son won three fish at a carnival and I want to try to keep them alive for as long as possible. I tested the water yesterday it was .25. I’ve had one for 5 days and the other 2 for 3 days. Your explanation was amazing of how it works. I know it hasn’t been cycled completely. I feed them twice a day, probably more food then they need at a time. I will reduce it to once a day. I’m used to having mammals and birds as pets, not fish so not feeding them for a couple of days will be hard for me. But if it means they will be better for it. Then I will.

Thank you for the tip. I'm new to this and have been struggling with ammonia for weeks now I've done water changes every other day with no change in levels and I have started to lose fish as a result. I've spoke to at least 30 different people all telling mr different advise none of which helped me. Had I known I was over feeding them and not truly removing ammonia from the water, we would have saved my fish. I was ready to give up on owning a aquarium. I am going to try this.

Thank you, Cory for making things so simple to understand for new fish keepers. I'm not a total novice but I'm far from being an expert and I'm learning tons of new stuff every day-one reason why I love KZbin. There is nothing I hate more than asking a forum or FB group for help and someone slams you and talks down to you for something you didn't know or understand. No one is born knowing it all...everyone has to learn what they know. Why can't they teach instead of belittle?? You have become one of my "go to" places for something I need to know... along with Rachel and Joey!! Keep up the great videos!! :)

This (imo) is one of the best tutorial videos out there and thank you for explaining the cycling process in layman's terms... The M&M's are a nice touch too. I always have trace NH3/NH4, which I always assumed was from the water source, I never considered the possibility that Prime might be putting it in there. That's a great shout!

FINALLY the answer I been looking for!!! I find it to be screwed up that all the major feed companies recommend feeding 2 - 3 times a day but never mention the amount of fish you have in the tank. If you have 20 fish in a 75gal tank, a "pinch 3X's a day is NOT even enough and the food will rot before they even get to eat it forming ammonia. I just went from 3X's a day back to 1 as I work to get my ammonia level back under control and the cause IS truly over-feeding. Thanks man!!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. Just got my test kit and tested the ammonia. It was 1.0 ppm, a new tank (10 gal) with 2 zebra danios, a dwarf gourami, and 3 mystery snails, and a cory. Have plants in already..a couple java ferns and some floating plants, frogbit, and just added a big gob of java moss that I am going to put on some rocks. The tank has been cycling for about a week...fish are eating well (feeding lightly 2x a day) and seem fine. No gasping or odd behavior. I am so glad I found this video...love how you explain things easily. Plan on doing 50% water changes 1-2 times a day and not feed until I get the levels close to 0. Oh, forgot, I added 1 ml of Seachem Prime to temp. help the issue.

you are the first person to recommend to me to stop feeding them, which now looking back makes so much sense. Ive been dealing with amonia levels that are staying around .25pm but today when i tested i noticed it was a little above .5pm and freaked out, i did a 40% water change and added a triple dose of bacteria start and felt so guilty. I'm glad to know the fish are semi-ok with the water now and wont die, (my main concern). Ill wait to feed them now until the levels are stable again. Thank you so much!

So many people forget to mention that prime and such only work for 24 hours thanks for adding that. This visual is so helpful! By far the best explanations I’ve seen. I had my tank for 5yrs added a new fish that had a virus and my whole tank crashed. I set it back up with new gravel and new filter (big mistake) and have been battling ammonia ever since. Finally getting it under control but was concerned about reducing feedings but you made a perfect point the ammonia is more deadly then them being hungry for a day or two. I wish I’d seen this weeks ago lol

It was nice of you to bring in some visual aids and speak a bit about the maths involved. I feel a lot of new aquarium owners see/hear something like "do 10% weekly water changes" and don't ever take the time to find out what that actually means or if that's sufficient for their aquarium. This was good for helping with aquarium spikes, but if you feel like taking it up a notch you could do another one showing/explaining what happens with nitrate levels before and after the typical weekly maintenance PWC and why 10-20% probably isn't enough.

Thanks for this Cory, I’ve been in this hobby since August and now have three tanks (my newest one is two weeks into a fishless cycle), you’ve become my go to guy for useful information. My first tank, which has been cycled since September has just started to show traces of ammonia, I’ve not let it rise above 0.5 PPM, and I’m doing 50% water changes to keep it well below that. I’ve added some extra ceramic media to the filter, and I will persist with regular water changes and reduced feeding. You’ve given me confidence it will rebalance. I’ve bought some Seachem Prime for when I do water changes, it has the best reviews out of the products I can get locally (in the UK). My tanks are all planted and I’m getting zero nitrite and nitrates readings.

Absolutely fantastic explanation of how to deal with high ammonia! I've just had to deal with high ammonia in my goldfish tank. My fish were listless and showing ammonia burns so I went online for help. I didn't see your vlog about it unfortunately so later on that day I fed my fish as they were so lively and hungry again. Tomorrow I won't be feeding them at all! I'm also going to take some of the goldfish to my local fish shop as my tank is definitely overstocked and that won't help either. Thank you so much for this explanation - it will stay in my head and I will be doing tests on the water each day to see how it's doing. I know that it is food that has caused this - I've been overfeeding them lately as they seemed so hungry. I won't do that again as I want them to do really well and I love my little water babies! Lots of love from Liz in the UK xxx 🐟🇬🇧❤️

I'm a brand new fish keeper and had my tank empty for just over two weeks before I added fish. I've already noticed huge amounts of conflicting advice, so ended up buying 11 fish for a 58 litre tank thinking I was doing the right thing. Bought testing kits and found the ammonia really high. Added salt as was advised salt is good for the fish. I've literally just done the first 50% water change, am hoping that will work.i have lost two fish but wasn't sure whether it was the ammonia or the aggressive male molly as both were male guppies who perished. Thank you for the advice.

Nancy Symonds I’m going through the same thing with my ammonia at 8.0, I’ve done a 50% water change two days in a row now and the ammonia hasn’t changed. How’d you do it??
@embalmers29

It took me a week of 25 percent water changes everyday and I cut down on my feedings.

Thanks! That was so incredibly reassuring to a guy who’s done freshwater back in the day and just finally got around to saltwater ...and obviously only had two weeks worth of patience before I added sea-life The moment ammonia and nitrites were zero...and of course now it’s spiking a little. Your video was exactly what I needed - both from a scientific as well as emotional standpoint. Thank you for posting it! I’m going to back off on feeding, test like crazy, and am more than happy to replace water as needed, but first will let nature play out a bit. I think they’ll be fine :)

I love your M&M videos, such a simple way to understand water chemistry. 😊 👍 Just before I upgraded my tank, I got an ammonia spike in the old one. A nerite snail had died a few days before the spike but I got it out within a few hours of it dying, tested my water and ammonia was zero but I did an extra water change anyway. Tested the water next day and I had a reading and so I did the 50% water changes with Ammo-lock to make it less toxic. Nothing worked. I turned that tank inside out looking for the source and never found it. Luckily my 33 gallon was on its way and I have a very helpful LFS who 'baby-sat' my Livestock while I waited for the new tank. I think as well as water changes, a cool head is your best weapon as panicking might make you do too much too soon if you see what I mean.

Ok so I got my tank down to 0.25ppm ammonia and 0ppm nitrites and 40ppm nitrates and a PH of 6.6 using ur method which I’m so pumped for and I started feeding my fish 2 days ago and both days it has stayed there. Also the reason I’m not worried about the 0.25 ammonia because that’s what’s in my tap water so I think it is the good ammonia but I wanted to thank u so much for making this video it made it makes so much sense and made my tank finally balance out so quick mind you I started out (off the charts ammonia 0ppm nitrites and 160 ppm nitrates) and I followed ur guide and it helped me understand my fish tank so much better and again thank you so much I really appreciate it 😁

OMG! I have been fishin cycling since March (it's now June) - I've had ammonia up to 2-3 ppm and have treated with Prime thinking that eventually it will be high enough to transfer to Nitrites - hasn't happened - so, I'm super stoked to find this video and will start doing the water changes, thanks Cory!
