I have found over the years that some employees stress the fish way too much when they collect them. The only store that ever mentioned something was at a PetSmart. Lady turned and looked at me and simply just said that she was worried she's over stressed the fish and that she will hold the fish till the next day for me to come and get. I really appreciated that after fish keeping for the better part of 15 years I've kept my casualty rates are low and I'm proud of that. But honestly fish as hardy as they can be they are a gamble there are sometimes when I've seen fish pass for no good reason. When my partner was getting into Bettas he bought one it was fine in the store and a week later it developed a tumor and passed shortly after. To say he was bummed out and didn't want anymore tanks is an understatement. Eventually he realized it's a crapshoot and he went and got another Betta and he's had it the better part of the year and has more tanks than he probably should but he's happy with them and takes care of them.

So after 1/3 water change . Is it full dose per volume of tank or just the water change volume?

This was a great list! You can hear the love in your voice especially with the clown loaches and thank you for mentioning the more difficult elements of their care! My favourite aquarium is my little kitchen planted aquarium with nerites and I'm about to add some cherry shrimp. It's like a little game of Where's Waldo everytime look at it 🤣🔥

I totally agree with you! always wash off anything that may be on your hands or arms. I work at a big chain store, not petsmart but similar. I tend to help out more and more in the fish area, as I keep a few fish myself. I sure wish we had a quarantine set up at our store. the fish come in, acclimate then go straight in our display tanks. it would be so awesome. We can get some really neat fish but its hard to receive them and keep them happy. without some sort of quarantine.

I'm surprised to hear that you fairly regularly re-home fish. I always feel supremely guilty if I have to re-home any of my fish for whatever reason, so this perspective is super refreshing!

Will they become reluctant to hv babies in the same cave again if you remove them by picking up the cave like this??

Not in my experience. When in full production mode, they'll spawn in the same cave every 2 weeks or so.

I was given a 10 galon tank but I have no idea about fish and fish care, always tried to have tetras as a kid and they would always die. I didnt want a 10 gal on for a betta but now I gues I can make a betta kingdom with it LOL! trying to learn about how to care for the fish, what fish can go with it and plant care. thank you for the video!

I worked in a fish store in the 80's while I was in College. We had undergravel filters in every tank. We also used a Diatom canister filter to supplement, and it was moved tank to tank,a couple times a day, filtering every tank about once a month. We sold most tanks with an undergravel filter and a hang on back filter. I like undergravel filters, I also like supplementing them with a power mechanical filter... and weekly water changes. My present favorite system is a Reverse-Flow undergravel filter, using a small canister filter with the return hose fitted to the undergravel filter's uplift tube. So, the canister filter is used as a pre-filter for the Reverse-Flow undergravel filter -- running "clean" water down, then up through the gravel, oxygenating the gravel bed. I also use a hang on the back filter, and both canister and HOB are filled with sponges only. I also have an air stone under a submersible heater. The tanks are heavily planted and plants are doing well. I service the canister filter about every 6 months, the HOB monthly, and I do a 10% water change weekly (vacuuming the gravel). I use stands that have an open top, so I can look under the filter. I also have little strips of mylar hot glued to the bottom of the tank so I can monitor water flow. No issues observed.

12:05 it’s thawing the clams. Unfreezing food to make softer. This video was awesome! No crazy edits. No obnoxious music. Just a dude and his fish, as it should be. It’s like a breath of fresh air. It doesn’t feel like ur “hosting” a video ur just showing us the things u like. And at the same time informing us.

I have had SOME of the fish die in one trip in a couple of days, gone back and got more and they all were fine. It depends on what stress they were under at the store.

That's a different issue than the one here. That could. be stress as you mentioned or illness etc. Specifically when all the fish are dead, that points to something environmentally.

I wanted to plant my goldfish tank but I'm not sure what bottom to use currently it has gravel and I hate it but the idea of emptying it and keeping the water and refilling it is putting me off😆

You guys are great, I want to get back into this hobby I have had tanks when I was younger and teenager and I am 35 now, just want to get my own place first because I am renting an apartment and don't want to have to move the tanks if I set up here, I really want to get some Dwarf Snakeheads and would love to get some smaller tanks as well. Last tank I kept is on my channel if you search my name TimeSplitterChimp and German Blue Ram, they had eggs and I was so excited but my ex wanted me to get rid of the tank so I found a nice guy to give all the fish to and yes that ex is now gone too lol
