You have too thin a substrate . There should be a layer of earth from the molehill covered with a thicker layer of fine sand .Then all organic waste will feed the soil and the layer of sand will create an anaerobic zone that will allow the development of bacteria that break down nitrates to molecular nitrogen and thus you do not need to change the water (only add evaporated water) 👍Low Tech natural aquariums💪
