Decided to switch from gravel to sand about a month ago and I don’t regret. Replaced it with Quikrete Playsand and added four wave makers. The Hygger double head blows from the left to the right and two less powerful, one on each side at the bottom, blows to the left creating that nice flow. Despite having some decorations in the tank, I can barely see fish waste sitting on the bottom. And as you said, the constant flow will keep these serial killers distracted. I’ve learned a lot from your vids. Thanks for the tips, Kev.

Ive always had an issue with tiny little particles floating around in my tank despite using a Fluval 206 canister filter. My intake is on the left like you point out in this video. I finally bought a small 580GPH wavemaker last week from Amazon. I installed it that evening above the left side intake. By morning.....my tank was CRYSTAL CLEAR!!!!!! @KaveMan Aquatics Hey Kev. This is a really informative video and it makes absolute sense I can’t thank you enough. I would definitely consider a wavemaker, as I know that water agitation is essential for my pleco only tank and the more water agitation the better. I do have a question, I have noticed that my airstone set up has stopped my plecos from shooting bubbles through their gills and swimming upwards for more oxygen. My question is, do I ditch the airstones and switch to a wavemaker or could I use a wavemaker as an additional? Should I also use a wavemaker that is optimised for my tank size or could I just straight up go with a 1500 gallons per hour?
@KaveManAquatics3 жыл бұрын
Don't know your tank size so cant say if 1500 gph would be good for you. But make sure the wave maker allows your guys to still swim where they'd like. Yes you can use both the wave maker and the airstone but you may run into a micro bubble problem. The wave maker will blow those airstone bubbles around the tank...Normally after adding a wave maker it provides sufficient surface agitation for oxygen transfer and you wont even need the airstone anymore.

Hi had to show you this! got this from a forum with chilids tanks! Hi there! Welcome to the forum! I have never heard of a fish that actually needs carbon. I think you may be mistaking filter cartridges (carbon) with filter media. Most aquarists don't use cartridges (carbon) because they are only active for 4 weeks and need to be replaced if you actually want activated carbon in your filter. Most people only use it if they are trying to rid a tank of medication or strong oders, ect. Filters do need filter media, you are absolutely right about that. Fish need the media in a filter because it allows nitrifying bacteria to grow, which eats the toxins fish produce and keeps your water safe. But, filter media consists of many things other than carbon. A good example is sponge. Many aquarist ditch the filter cartridge's because the carbon serves them no purpose and replace it with sponge or something similar for the bacteria to grow on. Fish don't actually need the carbon itself, but need the bacteria that grows on cartridges and other types of filter media. :D

Great video as always. I use a combo of a sump return on 1 side and bubbler on the non return side. Reason being I dont like my fish blowing around the tank with a wavemaker, especially as they are small South American cichlids currently. The sump return side blows the poop to the left side of the tank as its positioned close to the glass which causes surface agitation and flows to the bottom of the tank after hitting the glass (150 gal aquarium) so at least I only have 1 corner to vac. Keep up the great work!

I have a 16-gallon tank, 20” L x 10” W x 16” H … same footprint of a standard 10-gallon tank, except taller. My tank is admittedly overstocked with fish, minimal decor, and some plants. It has 100% gravel substrate. I generally do weekly water changes (5 gallons) via gravel vacuum, to keep my numbers good for the fish - as indicated by chemical water testing, not strips. I watched your thought-provoking videos about wave makers. To lessen the frequency that I perform water changes, will a wave maker help my situation? I have a HOB filter, with hacks to better filtrate the water. BTW, my HOB is positioned in the middle of the tank, but should I move it, for sake of a new wave maker? Or, is my tank too small to benefit from a wave maker? Your input will be very appreciated. Thank you for always delivering clearly explained videos, superb video quality and your perfect shape-up :)

The first question you answered or told me what the cause of the cloudy water was but let me get to the point question #1 I am experiencing a bacteria bloom, how long does the bloom last and should I do any water changes during the bloom or just wait it out and continue to do water testing?…I watched the video and you touches on it but I just wanna be sure that I am not resetting my tank cycle ( yes I added fish before it was finished cycling) .. question #2 I have two waves makers in my 55 gallon tank … I think you answered but just trying to double check should I put the more powerful wave maker on the top and place the weaker one lower in the tank or do it the opposite way? … 🙏

I've been trying a spray bar on that end, and while the plants are doing better, now the detritus doesn't seem to be moving from the other end. I tend to overfeed and depend on the filter to help with that, I've just notices some unwanted snails. LFS suggested a wave maker but they were not helpful in placement - they just said well we have our here- pointing to a tank. Nothing on change the rest to make them work together. Going to order 2 and move my output to the center of the tank. **I had been thinking about doing that anyway - moving the input and output to the center - to see if I could get the same results my Flex has - clean tank, healthy thriving plants, Thanks again

Do you ever turn the wave makers off? I have them positioned as you described... it's making a great circular flow, but I wonder if I am stressing the fish with all of the current now. Do they get tired? Should I hook them up to my light timer maybe? Thanks, man! I have had fish for 15 years and have learned more by discovering your channel. You've re-energized my love for the hobby. You are great at what you do!

Thank you! I'm glad you're finding the videos helpful. I keep my wavemakers on 24/7 and only turn them off for feeding time. If you think about them being in the wild, there's always a current, day and night 😊

I have a question. We brought 5 goodish home yesterday. My 2 big ones died over night. I do have some bubbles on the surface but it is NOT creating a foam. The bubbles are popping and the water seems fine chemically. I do use test strips. Since my fish died. I will be doing a 30% tank cleaning. Is there anything I should do to help my other 3 fish survive until the weekend when I can get them tank mates? We HAD 2 TETRA AND 3 DANIO glofish. Do you have any recommendations?

There’s a few Important factors that come before oxygenation like tank cycling. Test your water parameters and make sure your tank is cycled, if not your fish won’t last long. The test strips aren’t the best, you should go with an API master test kit, it’s more accurate and you’re going to always need that in this hobby anyway. Yes do a water change and then test your water. I have a great video on using the master test kit inside this playlist...but when you get a chance you should watch as many videos in the playlist as you can. Will definitely be helpful to beginners in the hobby 😁 kzbin.info/aero/PLP5OXTIIDO8NYvhUHAmwAd54WFmS4d8er

Hi there. Thank you for the very educational video's. I Just started again with tanganyika after 10 years. One thing I want to make sure : if intake is on left side of the thank, you place the wavemaker on the left side. But...do you place it right above the intake or better in the center of the left side Window and Just below the water surface? Final question: with a 120cm tank and a large rock pile on other side of main wavemaker, would you suggest placing a small additional wavemaker in between these Rocks at the Bottom for better circulation? Many thanks from Belgium

Hey brother, I’ve learned a lot of your channel! Thanks for these vids, keep it up! Question: if I have 2 filters in the tank, shouldn’t I put both intakes on the same side? So I can have the right direction with 2 wave maker?
@KaveManAquatics Жыл бұрын
You can, but with wave makers in the right place, you dont have to. The intakes can be on opposite sides while wavemakers handle the flow of water.

Hey Kev, No disrespect. I work in the drinking/wastewater industry and we commonly use aeration diffusers in the MBRs and Sludge tanks. Aeration (oxygenation) of the water is not by bubbles popping on surface, breaking surface tension. When we design diffusers (bubblers) for these huge tanks, our calculations for the aerobic bacteria tanks rely on two main variables 1. Contact time 2. Total air flow. If you're running bubbles, the deeper you set them in the tank, the more oxygen transfer there is (increased contact time). If you put the bubbles near the surface of the water, you will have much less oxygen transfer because of the reduced contact time of the bubble as it raises through the water. A powerhead, just cycles the water through the tank at a faster speed where the oxygen is at the top of the tank. It works great in our application vs. bubbles, but that isn't practical for MBRs in wastewater plants.

Thanks for the video. Very informative. I have a 135 g african cichlid tank, with sump filtration. How should I position it? Unfortunately, I'm not very familiar with words like "filter intake & outtake" so please bear with me😊. I believe my intake is on the top left back corner of my tank. So the water goes from there through a pipe and goes down in the sump. The sump has a motor that pushes the water back in the tank, and the water enters the tank through a pipe from the middle at the back of the tank. For now, I've positioned the wave maker on the left side of my tank ( about 6 inches below my intake) and the water is pushed in the opposite direction (left to right, angled slightly upward so it creates a wave on the surface and oxygenates the tank) Should I position my WM on the right, angling upward again, so that the water is pushed from right to left in the direction of the sump intake at the top left corner? Thank you.

Excellent video. I no longer do bottom vacuuming by applying this trick. My big aquariums are up to 3 feet deep so this saves a lot of maintenance work. I use very little substrate on top of a simulated rock bottom mat too providing for less detritus on the bottom.

I Have 250litre aquarium I have a a spray bar that runs across back of my tank guess you call this input my output Is at back of tank on right as you look at tank. I have had alot of problems clearing the waste with power and manual vacuum can't get it out want to use your method of wave makers like the idea of 2 for maximum impact I guess I need to put one on right pointing to top and one near bottom on left but have no idea of what power I need maybe you can tell me what sizes I need or if 2 is too much. Thanks Nigel

Thanks for this helpful video. I have a Seachem Tidal hang-on-back filter on one end of my tank, so I don't see a way to position my wave maker so it's facing the same direction as the filter output (unless I point them both from back to front of the aquarium). Suggestions?
@KaveManAquatics3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately its tough to get good circulation from a wavemaker when you have an HOB. Because water is coming in from above and back of the tank. Try moving your HOB and wavemaker to opposite sides, both on top. If you feel its not doing a great job of pulling detritus then try the wavemaker at the bottom of your tank. Or you could always upgrade to a canister 😁 - kavemanaquatics.com/product-category/equipment/filters/
