I'm a goldfish addict so I will purchase a couple and give em a shot. I think they would be good for hospital and quarantine tanks. I have a few questions though. I loathe using air pumps because of the vibrations and sound they pump into my aquariums along with the air. Is there a way to baffle/muffle them? Should I be using a different kind of air pump? I currently use what I believe are called diaphragm pumps. Idk what blowers and linear piston whatevers are, or what's better/different about them.

What I've noticed is that a lot of American aquarists use in tank filters.. I'm wondering why.. It doesn't look good, takes away from the natural look of the tank ( although a lot of American aquarists on KZbin don't really have natural looking tanks but that's another subject) and takes up space in your tank. Here in Europe, well at least here in Holland, external canister filters are much more often used.. The only thing you then have leading in and out of your aquarium are an intake pipe and a spray bar... also a good size canister filter offers much more biological and mechanical filtration than those in tank sponge and Ziss filters. Furthermore CO2 diffusion and heating can also be taken care of by the canister filter cleaning up the interior of your aquarium even more.

It's just more efficient at keeping a healthy bacterial colony which is good for high bioload fish
@sshep865 жыл бұрын
I don't know about that. For high bio load you really want high turn over, something air powered will struggle to do.
@AdamTillontheWeb5 жыл бұрын
They’re good filters, but not my fav for goldfish. You’d have to run too many to cover the average goldfish tank, and ime with goldfish the small intake prefilter clogs quickly. Easy to clean, but even then the tall filter tends to get exposed media during large volume water changes (common with goldfish). It’s an okay choice, but for goldfish, not my fav
@orandachildren10515 жыл бұрын
I think it would probably be good to pair up with a big sponge of sorts. This for bio and large sponge for mechanical. Just rinse the large sponge in tap water for speedy cleaning and not worry about killing off the bio bacteria.
@AdamTillontheWeb5 жыл бұрын
OrandaChildren if that’s the goal then a box filter filled with floss would be even better. We run sponge for bio and box for mechanical in all our tanks, and the floss pulls more gunk and is much less messy to clean than the sponge. This plus a box would be good, but I’d still pick sponge myself (can’t convince myself the cost is worth it for goldfish). For a planted tank, this is MUCH nicer.

The only downside I can see is that k1 and other medias typically do not offer extremely effective bio media, as well as the lack of the mechanical filtration that also can cause issues within an aquarium. I think it would be best to have something like matrix/bio/lava in this, with the k1 or other moving bed media.
