I built an undergravel outta pvc & a couple Tupperware lids with holes in them... about 3 years old now and seems to be still working great... I wish they were more commercially available... had one in the 90s for around ten years... that tank had electric blue jack Dempsey and some huge common plecos...thanks for another awesome video...! Keep it up...!

Great video as usual Cory. I had a sunsun canister, I kept up maintenance pretty well but the flow sucked so bad that it turned into a nitrate bomb and killed all my fish. I immediately returned to my aquaclear hang on backs and have never looked back. Also added an air stone and it has helped a ton.

28:24 The sponge he holds up (sold at his store) is AWESOME!!! I just recently ordered 2 of the large sponges after watching one of Co-op's vlogs on filters. I just can't say enough good things about this sponge! IF I had known the garbage it was going to keep out of my tank, the extra filtration it was going to provide and the little snack it provides to the fish before being sucked out and wasted...I would have done this SO much sooner! Now, to be honest, we were going to try to "make" one ourselves from the same type of material. Trust me, these are very cheap for what they do and you will not be disappointed. The sponge is closed at the bottom, made especially for Cory's store, so baby fish won't get sucked up into your filter. Two will last you a lifetime probably. I'm going to order two of the small ones for my hospital tank, but they were out of stock when I ordered the big ones. And they were shipped SO fast, Cory almost outdid my Prime delivery from Amazon, lol! Really appreciate it, thanks Cory!!

Hey Cory, I know this video is over a year old, but wow, I have learned so very much from you. Between this cast and the filtration video I feel like I am getting a stronger footing in becoming a solid fishkeeper after a 20 year hiatus from the hobby. Your advice resonates (love hot-rodding things, saving money, and I also am always thinking, "how can I make this more efficient?". I am on a couple of fish forums and it's true - people like handing out advice (or taking it) but they never tell (or ask) "Why do I do this?" They tinker with their tanks never understanding that each change can have a huge impact, that everyone's water and products and stocking are different. Wish I lived in the US and could buy from your store. Great online presence, by the way.

On the comment about under gravel plates and plant growth. From my experience in the last tank that I had, this is definitely a game changer. I had one in a 30 gallon of mine and now I have a 60 gallon without the plates and the plants don't do as well even though I am doing the same thing nutrient and light wise. With the under gravel the roots had no brown on them and all of them were bright white (plants practically grew like weeds). One thing with the under gravel though is that some plants did not like the high flow to the roots such as the onions or banana plant. These plants ended up rotting. I was always told (as Corey has said) that I am dumb for doing so and I would eventually have issues. This tank was set up for 10 years and the tank never had to be taken apart. This was not my main source of filtration as I used a HOB filter as well.

I run (air powered) UGF's "in reverse flow" in all my smaller tanks. The trash gets pushed up, out and away from the gravel. The sponges get anything big enough to clog the UGF's and when I do water changes I run the hose draining the water through the UGF's pipes so that I can suck up anything that was too small for the sponges to pick up. in that way I either clean up using the sponges as a mechanical filter and clean it up every few days or clean up anything smaller when I suck it up during the water changes every week or two (it works the same as having a drain hole under the tank). for my larger tanks (4 tanks 55 and two over 55 gal) I have home made "Aqua-King" filters cleaning up the water before pumping it down into the UGF's. I know that it want out of style because people have trouble with starting the vacuum in the intake pipes but you could make a venture into bringing back a type of filter like the Aqua-king that has the water pumped out of the filter instead of the into it, just because that type of filter can be used as high pressure "Filtered" water pumped into new or existing filters that need "Clean" water pumped into them. With the 180 gal. (The Tank I have at the hospital that the kids put together) I have four reverse flow 700 GPH powerheads with sponges (covered in lava rocks so you cant see them) but I have the pipes fitted with two pumps T tubed into them (in a forward flow) so they can pump water in for 15 to 20 minutes to clear up any clogs or collected sludge before water changes every month. We had to add air stones in the back corners, on either side of the tank because there was "NO WATER MOVEMENT AT ALL". Just like every other step in the building of the system, I bring up the problem and answer any questions as vagally as possible and make them think of the solution when the problem came up and the plants needed help to get better. These UGF method's have worked for me for over 40 years so I thought I'd share it and see what you think. and see if you can add anything to improve on them. BTW: All the kids say hi and wanted me to tell you that they love your videos.

Yorkshire Pillock No it’s a heating cord that is very low level heat meant to create just enough current within the substrate to slowly move nutrients about. Look into it...it’s kind of an interesting idea. it doesn’t heat the tank at all, it just creates movement of nutrients in the substrate.

If one puts a HOB filter on the side of a tank rather than on the back in one corner, how does that affect the overall flow in the tank? My HOB is overpowered for my tank because... it's what I have. When it's hung on the back, it looks like that side of the tank is a vertical super loop with the other side being a massive dead spot, with plants there being constantly covered in detritus. But I'm worried if I move it to the side the whole tank will turn into one long whirlpool and the inhabitants won't have any areas to rest.

34:08 that is my sentiment exactly. I've used Co2 injection myself with great results but it just seems unnatural to me. Does nature have Co2 injection? No! Rivers and lakes are vast bodies of water with vast amounts of plants and trees surrounding them and not a lot of respired Co2, yet they do fine. If plants are more of a priority for others that's fine, but I'm in it mostly for the FISH. 🐟

I love them myself but my issue is since I bought the Fluval 3.0 light it sits low and the air stone bubbles and splashes on my light. A South American surface dwelling nano fish? Dwarf Pencilfish (Nannostomus marginatus). Great beautiful little fish, but not for beginners and not for tanks with aggressive eaters as they have small mouths. Perfect dither fish for dwarf SA cichlids and love floating plants to feel secure hiding in. Tank must be large enough (at least 10 gal or more) to house 6 at the least and, more ideally, 10 fish. Less need for hiding with a group and they exhibit distinct behaviors that you would never see with just a pair of fish. Excellent info on circulation. Made me rethink my 30 gallon tank. Thanks!

I don't know where you are, but The Wet Spot out of Portland, Oregon usually sells them. That is if you are willing to pay for shipping. Also, you might check your local aquarium club. Splash Tetras get to be 2.5 to 3 inches. Hardly nano. Difficult to find, but an excellent surface pencilfish is the Barred Pencilfish (Nannostomus espei). And another nano pencil is the Green Stripe (Nannostomus marylinae), but they inhabit the top third of the the tank. Not just the surface area. Good luck.

Hi Cory. Just listened to this live stream just forwarding through a little for sake of time. I learned that you are not a fan of canister filters and I get it. However I’ve purchased an FX6 for a 120 gallon with dimensions of 4’ x 2’. Two questions I’d like to ask. Where would you put the intake and output tubes for best water flow? Also, should power go out, isn’t it feasible to actually remove the filter media into a large bucket and run an air stone to keep bacteria alive? Finally, I’m not keeping slow moving fish-I’d be keeping loaches, silver dollars, assorted tetras or barbs and possibly a small cichlid pair like rams or kribensis. If not the cichlids, MAYBE dwarf gouramis (though I realize they prefer slower moving water). Thank you for your advice.

Thanks for another great learning experience! Perhaps this is more about filtration then water movement but I have a 95g Mbuna tank. "Everyone" says you need lots of filtration, 5-10 times the tank volume/h, because they are "messy" fish etc. I understand, thanks to your filtration lesson, the amount of bacteria needed but how much water needs to pass the filter in order for them to keep up with waste production? Also, do African cichlids create more ammonia/unit food than average or is it just that these tanks are generally heavily stocked?

+Boris Swede well africans dont produce more waste than others. If i put 1 cup of food into an affrican tank, a goldfish tank and a community tank. The result is the same on all 3 tanks for waste. Commercial farms let the turn over rate be as low as once per 3 to 4 hours. I personally think any reasonable amount of filtration on a tank will have enough flow to convert ammonia to nitrate in a timely manor.

So why is the "rumor" that AC-tanks need such a high turn over rate?

What you recommend for a 10 gallon tank? My filter is the Aqua Clear 20 filter with the intake sponge i modified it like you show in your other video. And a fluval e100 heater series that i had it on the left corner and started to flash the LF. So i just moved it a little bit towards the right and it stop flashing the LF do you think i still should put a airstone in it? If i do then i would need to buy one but i dont know what material i need for this. So i could order it from your store :).

whats the difference between an air stone and a wave-maker?
@Aiden-V2.0

Air stones help circulation and add oxygen to the water, it's the thing that's making the wall of bubbles in the tank behind Cory in the video. Whereas wave-makers are a water pump that is mostly for circulation, it's basically a submersible fan. Given the choice between the two, I'd go with an air stone.

I am into biofloc fish farming.in biofloc the tank water should never be still, bcoz the sludge will settle down at the base.i used wave maker so that the water will be always moving, but bcoz of the heaviness of the floc water the wave maker stops working in a week.plz recomend something else.

I have 2 airstones and a Fluval Aquaclear 110 and GKM with Powerhead and UV light my son keeps telling me to do away with the airstones because he doesn't like the way it looks and keeps telling me that they serve no purpose he says if I can give him one legitimate reason they benefit my tank he'll back off.
