Idk why you’d want to avoid these… they’re really good for the ecosystem in the tank. Cleaning up algae, I got bladder snails and it stays clean.

I have and had all of these snails and they are all good depending on what you want, you also forgot to mention the "true" pest snail which is the Malasian trumpet snail which is super difficult to get rid of short of pouring chemicals in the aquarium, but, the trumpet snail is also good in my opinion, I find it very usefull and has a beauty and utility of it's own. Obviously this video is done for beginners that know very little about aquariums or for aquarium purists that want a sterile aquarium. I find biotope aquariums to be the most exciting to watch because of the diversity of critters that live in balance with each other. If you know how a lake or pond works, that's how I like my aquariums to work, roughly speaking.

I keep ramshorn snail in all my planted tanks, they are great a eating algae, specially in the Java moss. Also, I keep guppies, platies and red cherry shrimps, so I use the snails as a way to know when the calcium is running low in the tanks. Since they reproduce a lot, they make a great snack for my cichlids and catfish. If you have ramshorn snails I recommend 3 things to keep to the population down, 1. Remove the snails that you don’t like or ugly looking snails with water change 2. Stop over feeding 3. Vacuum and clean your tank weekly to remove un-eaten food.

I also have ramshorns and I love them. They behave similarly to mystery snails but they're just smaller and slower. I think they're the best cleaners I have (with bladders), which is great as I also keep mystery snails and they're mostly there to be spoiled and cute 😂

There’s a snail that’s kind of new to the hobby. They are called blueberry snails. They look sort of like mystery snails and eat algae BUT they have live birth AND those births only contain one or two babies at a time. Personally I enjoy snails even pond snails. A note: people keep mystery snails not apple snails. Don’t keep apple snails but mystery snails don’t eat plants and are pretty. Their clutches(eggs) are above the water line and easy to remove though usually they don’t even hatch unless you keep them misted n stuff. Happy snail keeping.

Population explosion of the first two in my sump. I put my plant clippings in there, and they break all of that down. 5 or 10 climb over the wall into the pump section and get tossed into the aquarium where they are promptly eaten by my puffers. So I'm turning fish poop into plants, into snails into more fish poop. The snail to fish pipeline is unintentionally booming, though the shells need cleaned up often. The pea puffers don't crunch them up. But hey free food for me so long as I keep pushing it along with clippings and massive floating plant growth.

Apple snails in my country does eat live plants. In fact, they are the reason why our rice production is being devastated for decades after they became an invasive species. I kept one in a tank and hot damn it was a voracious eater of live plants. But, I also took care of some mystery snails that did not eat live plants so I guess it depends on the type you got.

Mine loves plants. My Amazon sword was her favorite and It's now half the size of when it was at its peak. I now drop a skewer of lettuce, cucumber and celery in my tank and the apple snail is the first one there. It takes her 2 days to devour it all. She also likes nori seaweed, dried krill, and frozen blood worms.

@Chompchompyerded
@Chompchompyerded 4 ай бұрын
I disagree strongly about Apple snails (aka mystery snails). You can raise babies if you want to, but it's really easy not to if you don't want to. They will often climb to the top of the tank, where they will lay a clutch of many eggs in a pink egg sack. If you want baby snails, you can remove them from where they were laid, and put them in a plastic box with a few holes poked in them. If the box is kept humid, the egg sack is kept dry, and there is water in the box for the babies to move into after they hatch, you will get absolute loads of baby snails. But if you leave them where they were laid, it is likely that the egg sack will dry out and no babies will develop. If the egg sack gets wet, it will drown the developing snails, and will probably grow mould or some equally nasty stuff on the egg sack. The way I hatch my snails is to take a small Fluval hatching/birthing box, and turn the "V" shaped part upside down. Add water to the box so that it is just below the "V" shaped plastic part. It will cause the box to have just the perfect amount of humidity. Rather than putting the box on the outside of the tank as usual, you turn it around, and have the water in the tank covering the outside of the box. The heat from the aquarium is just enough to cause the perfect amount of humidity to develop in the box. After that, tape up all the openings with painter's tape to hold the humidity in, place all you egg sacks on the "V" shaped part, but the lid on, and wait for the magic to happen. It will take about a week and a half to two weeks for them to hatch out. You will have more than you can use, so find friends who might want them, and/or trade some to your local fish ship in exchange for some fish food or something else you need. There are several things you can do with the egg sacks if you have plenty of snails for your needs. Just leave them out on a bookcase outside of any container and the eggs will dry out. You can also put them in water for a couple of weeks. That will drown any developing snails. You can also put them in a freezer bag and put them in the freezer for a couple of weeks, then toss them. The eggs will be dead if they were left to freeze hard. You can also boil them for fifteen our twenty minutes and that will kill the eggs. That can sometimes get messy and a bit stinky though. One other thing you can do if you have too many babies are to use them as food for puffer fish or assassin snails. I have never had to do this since my snails have always hatched out to be colours which are in high demand, and I can always find someone who will want to buy them. Raising snails to sell can be a bit of a chore though, because you have to always make sure that they have the proper water parameters, and that they have access to lots of calcium and other minerals so that the shell grows evenly. Lines in shells from improper mineralization makes snails which will have no market. My snails always hatch out magenta with a few albinos sprinkled in for variation. Even though the albinos are worth more, I always sell my albinos. I also sell most of my magenta ones, and keep only a small number of magenta, since they are breeding true and never throw off a brown, a green, a chestnut, or a natural colour one. One day when I get another tank, I'll try breading one of the other colours, such as the golden, or the chestnut if I can find any that breed true. Apple snails are not as horrible as they make it sound in this video. In fact they are pretty great! It's no problem to control the numbers, and they can earn their keep if you find someone to buy them. They are great little friends, and can easily become the centrepiece of your aquarium, while being an excellent member of your clean up crew. The fact that they come in so many different colours makes them an even better aquarium pet.

Snails will never be a problem if there's no excess food in your aquarium. Numbers should rise and fall as the food source your ecosystem produces rises and falls. Ive also realized that barbs like to eat them...nothing wrong with them being used as a natural food source

My goldfishes love on munching on bladder snails and ramshorn snails. They excitedly hunt for the small ones hiding in the foliage. My male goldfishes excitedly chase down the free swimming little white bladder snails. Snails that have grown too big for them to swallow and crack, serve as our "bonding" treat. My female goldfishes, have learned to either follow my hand around when submerged in the tank, hoping eyed pick up a fat ramshorn and squish it for them. Other girls are proactive already seeking out, nudging and hovering on a snail did you want me to squish for them. By the way, I noticed they prefer ramshorn over bladder snails.

Planaria are strictly carnivores, eating small worms, crustaceans, snails and fish fry. While they will consume snails - they will present problems to other life in your tank. It’s better to get fish that eat snails or remove them manually to reduce their numbers.
