I have recently added lots of neocaridina shrimps to my heavily planted 75 and I’ve very quickly become obsessed with sitting and watching them. They’re my new favorite thing to watch while drinking my coffee in the morning. I have reds, blues, yellows, and a few others. They’re really fascinating.

@himlolo

A lot of times (besides neocaridina) their water parameters aren’t mutual, also they do compete with each other but it’s really hard to kill either so it doesnt really matter. The only major thing id see that keeps them apart is compatibility with other fish, many fish that prey on shrimp won’t prey on snails

Mystery snails! I have both, but I love my mystery snails, even though they sometimes uproot my plants. The fact that they come in so many colors is a plus - but I had no idea they would get so big! I moved them to my 55g where they somewhat get lost in the big tank. My cherry shrimp multiply like the loaves and fishes, but what turned me off to the shrimp was when I found them eating one of my guppies while it was still alive. I get that the guppy must have been dying, but, geez, can’t you wait till it’s dead? That was months ago and I’m still not over it. I’ve been feeling negative towards the shrimp ever since. 🐟🦐😪

How could they eat it if it was even remotely "healthy"? It would be moving lol? I mean I get you in a sense cause I feel bad about it too, but that's just normal bussiness in the fish keeping world and in nature. Gotta get with the flow

@@dimitrijekrstic7567 Dude - it was moving! I’m not begrudging they were cleaning up my tank, but the poor guppy - who was obviously sick - was still alive. I could see him breathing. I’m just saying at least wait until the poor fish is dead before snacking on him. If he felt bad before he probably felt worse being eaten alive.

I recently started developing black beard algae in my 29 gal. planted aquarium. So, after a bit of research, I bought a dozen amano shrimp. Unfortunately, my 4 mollies and 1 small angelfish decided they were for them to eat! Within 3 days, an expensive snack was totally gone. My best bet has been using liquid carbon along with cutting feedings down to once per day and reducing light to 6 hours per day. After 2 weeks, algae is almost gone. Thanks for all your wonderful info. Love my mystery snails!

Of the snails, Bladder snails are my Favorite. I love watching their antics in the tank, they 'swim' and 'skate' across the surface of the tank, they shake each other off of their shells, and they're funny when they're stretching out to try and reach the next leaf. I have a Mystery snail, 3 cherry shrimp and about 5 male guppies that I’m waiting to depart this world so I can set up a full blown invert tank. I plan to keep a mix of both snails and shrimp ... which will be SO much easier to feed once my voracious guppies are gone. LOL. I learned the hard way that female Mystery snails are escape artists. Two of them managed to crawl out of covered tanks and fall to their deaths! I’m assuming they did that to lay eggs. Ugh. My male MS is still happily thriving. Never tries to crawl out.

I was rather caught by surprise when I my mystery snail float, on the wall of thank at the surface, decided to detach from the wall and float across the surface over to a cuttlefish bone that was floating on the surface! I had to go look that one up and indeed, mystery snails can store up air enough to float themselves about the tank, not just down, but any direction! I've only seen my snail do that once, but it was a shocker to see the first time!

My mystery snail seems to be ill or dying, so I have just bought a horned nerite snail instead to control the algae. And yes, from my experience you should add calcium sources to the water if it is not hard enough. Neutral water gradually gets more acidic in an aquarium if this is not done. Also fish can bite the snail's whiskers, especially the more aggressive ones. Even neon tetras do that.

Another great video :) At 2:45 there is a fish with a mostly yellow body that swims off screen to the left and then another comes from the left that has the same yellow fins but a less yellow body. It swims to the right and the center of the body seems to get a blue hue for a moment in the middle of the screen. I assume both fish are the same species, perhaps one a male or a female or alpha/beta males. What kind of fish is this and do you have a species spotlight video on it? A very attractive looking fish and I would love to know more about it.

In my experience the choice comes down to what sort of water you have. I have hard water that is absolutely amazing for snails and they grow the most beautiful shells but shrimp never survive longer than a few months. On the other hand my favorite pet stores water is perfect for shrimp and they look and breed beautifully, however their snails shells are pretty pathetic.

I prefer shrimp, they're just more beautiful to me, weird alien looking things that they are. But I have both - 3 species of shrimp and 3 species of snails. I like having all this biodiversity, it makes the tank more self-sustaining. I have rosy barbs, that hunt both on cherry shrimp and ramshorn snails, but both breed fast enough to compensate. It's free live food, which is great for the fish.

I have gotten into shrimps and I have mystery snails. Lately the mystery snails I've gotten have died as babies. I do have three. I have about six shrimp but I'm worried my tetras are eating them. Tetras are my husbands favorite but not mine. They are all in a 20 gallon tank. Should I set up my other five gallon tanks for my shrimp until they get bigger so my tetras won't eat them? I don't even want the tetras I'm fine with shrimp and snails. What should I do.

When the mystery snails lay their eggs and they hatch are they going to remain small like pest snails or eventually grow into a decent size snail?

I want to start working with both but the water with the shrimp is questionable on getting the water perfect for the shrimp. I need perfect water parameters first. As it is I am putting in 20 ponds here shortly to raise all my high end guppy strains as it is and it's my understanding that having Guppies with them would have unstable water parameters at times so a lot to think about.
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 3 жыл бұрын
If you have water conducive for breeding guppies - neocaridina shrimp and mystery snails shouldn't be an issue (shrimp in their own tank or with the snails).

I had a male and female mystery snail in a 10 gallon tank and once they started putting out eggsacks, I immediately moved one of them to a 5 gallon tank I had readily available to hold one. Unfortunately for me, it turned out I moved the female, and she continued to lay eggsacks in the 5 gallon tank. And one of them was viable and now I have scores of baby snails dropping into that tank! I'm getting every tank I have in the house up and running to move the babies in to, even one gallon tanks can take a couple of babies while they are still so small. But I'm going to have to donate them to my local aquatics store as they get big enough. I had previously turned over 6 snails to them from an earlier eggsack that for whatever reason didn't yield an abundance of babies, so I know they will accept them, but I have to raise them to a certain size before they will accept them, so I have to get those babies moved out of the 5 gallon just as fast as they are big enough to move.

They’re usually easy to sell to pet stores. I’ve kept 100s in a 20 gallon before.

I actually traded in the six baby mystery snails for a nerite snail. I probably could have asked for more, but that was my current need, and they were happy to give me one in exchange. The 5 gallon tank is having severe water quality issues with so many snails in it, even though most of them are still just a millimeter or two in size. I moved a bunch of them to a 10-gallon tank which helped a lot, but there are still problems. I put a new cartridge into the filter the other day, and after one day it was already pretty bad, and after two it probably should be replaced already. That's how bad it is. And that's with me changing out two gallons of water during the course of the day every day. It's just appalling. Hence my urgent desire to keep moving babies out until the water conditions stop degrading at such a shocking rate. That said, given how small most of them still are, I worry about moving them at all. I moved out ten of the largest ones today and they all seem to be getting along fine in their new tanks, but moving them when they are so small is disconcerting!

You did a species profile on mystery snails right? I have 10 aquariums but only one I can put my two mystery snails 🐌 n but the shells are dissolving and I really believe it’s cause of my hard water but how do I fix that? I’ve tried water softener cuddle bones and even calcium in their diet but the shells still are dissolving.
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 2 жыл бұрын
Usually that happens with soft water. Cuddle bone may help. Life With Pets also sells a calcium infused snail food too.
