@10:50 I currently have a Dwarf Gourami in quarantine who recently developed ich. I'm treating with salt, heat and Cupramine in a 10g bare bottom tank with just a cave for decoration. Cupramine doesn't mix well with dechlorinators. How do I keep NH3 lvls down without water changes or adding Prime??

It takes time but pays off bigtime. If you have the money then starting with many plants can work- but who does that right? As the learning curve kicks in you learn to love Anubias, Taiwan moss,Java ferns...Rotala is the best of the bunch plants. To think for years i had plastic plants and big fish. Now my aquarium looks more like a pond.

You had mentioned tiger barbs can tolerate a high pH of 8 - can they be kept with African cichlids (such as Demasoni)?

I've tried various live plants over the past 3 years ... mostly given up ... I have guppy grass in my 3 tanks now and it grows slowly if I keep the lights to a few hours (5 - 6 hours per day). My fish and shrimp love the guppy grass and I love how it looks. :)

I've been keeping aquariums off and on for the last 35 years, I've tried a few times to keep live plants and never could figure out why they never lasted, after doing a lot of research over the last 4 months I learned why they never lasted long. Before, I never had the right fish (Mbuna Cichlids mostly), or I never left the light on long enough (some days I never turned the light on) or just had the wrong kind light. Currently, I'm on my 4th month with my first planted tank after doing my research and it is thriving quite nicely with some Blue Shrimp, a handful of Guppies and a Snail or two. On another tank I've added Pothos and Monstera last month and it is also thriving. Last week I added an overhead sump to another tank full of Peacocks and Haps so I can add Pothos, Monstera, Lucky Bamboo and maybe a Peace Lilly. All my tanks are well established with the newest tank being set up for over a year now which does help, but with the right amount of light, patience and some fish I think it is easier than a lot of people think it is to keep live plants.

Planted tanks need fertilizers if you have plants that live in the water column, or floaters. Root tabs will provide nutrients to those feeding from the root, but not from the water column. Also fish waste is not a sufficient form of fertilizer as it lacks potassium, and plants need a lot of potassium

I never use liquid fertilizer and have floating plants in many of my tanks. They grow so fast I end up throwing handfuls away every month.

You are absolutely right. I kept aquariums throughout my childhood and never had live plants. After a few bad experiences with power outages and the like, I gave up the hobby for about 20 years. I recently started back up and tried planted tanks this time around. I can’t tell you how much easier it is now keeping planted tanks than it was with unplanted tanks in years past, and they look so much better. Thank you for your helpful and informative videos. They are an inspiration to me and I’m sure many others.

My boyfriend got me into aquariums last year. Ember tetras were my first fish. I absolutely love them. They're active and very cute. Now i have 12 embers and I added 8 mzuel tetras (I only found these in one pet shop in my city - Perth, West Aus). They all think they're part of the same school. Its very cute to watch. They're all very playful together.

I started my first 10 gallon aquarium about 2 months ago and noticed that my plants are turning brown and it doesn't come off. I put liquid fertilizer every other day but that doesn't seem to be improving. Is this something that I need to worry about or is this normal for new aquariums?
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 9 сағат бұрын
It depends on the plant - Java Fern does that frequently. Other plants it could mean it's low in iron or potassium?

I love my ramshorns and trumpet snails bladdersnails can stay away though lol, I just don't like them. I actually don't think they do much to help the appearance of my glass since they leave tiny hair sized poops on it, but I'm trying to build a mini ecosystem and I still consider my hitchhiker snails to be a valid part of it.

There appears to be a tremendous amount of bypassing, with this filter, between the skimmer and the large holes in the back and front of the basket. I find that also is true with the Aquaclear, as well.

I love your videos! But I would have to disagree with you that nitrates are toxic to fish. It would only be toxic if the level reaches 500 PPM or higher! Which is almost impossible to reach that level naturally. Now ammonia and nitrites can be toxic at certain levels. If you have between 40 and 50 PPM of nitrates, I wouldn't freak out or do a water change. I would cut back on feeding and put more rooted plants in there and just observe your fish and plants! Remember, a hungry fish is a healthy fish. You don't need to feed them every day, especially if you have a good food web in your aquarium.

Everything I have read talks about how easy it is to breed cherry shrimp, but I just cannot get a colony established. I get a group of adults, they don't breed, and eventually the group dies out. This has happened to me multiple times. I love shrimp and would love to keep them, but they are just a money pit for me.

I really appreciate my grandfather's education when it comes to ponds and fish keeping with plants growing up. He had a Zen garden in his backyard full of plants and trees that my son currently owns in Northern California and keeping it up. It's our generational house passed down. We all became appreciative of nature and the relationship. The funny thing is that it all started with my great grandfather in the rice patty fields lol

I've tried those before but was unlucky as they slowly but surely faded away until I gave it one last try: a tank with quite a strong light (compared with the other tank where light was moderate) and it worked wonderfully! They develop fast thanks to the photosynthesis and are finally thriving 😊

@@andyd834 Yikes 😢 I'm lucky at 7.2 from the tap or even 6.8 from bottled water which I can lower slightly down with catappa leaves or alder cones. They do release tannins but I don't mind the black water effect and neither do my fish 😊

@Beb_73 blackwater is extremely beneficial. And I want to try diluting my ph down to see if I can get some going even with mixed water. Then I want to slowly try and get them used to my ph. I mean if they can do it with fish why couldn't I with some plants?

I got back into the hobby after a 20 year absence to try keeping a planted tank. Now I have two tanks and I enjoy the plants almost as much as the fish. Lots of benefits, easy to do as long as you chose beginner friendly plants and plant friendly fish. When you first get started fertilizer (liquid and tabs) can be a big help. I have found that after a year or so the plants do fine with out them, with the exception of swords which look so much better for me with the occasional root tab.

I have had success with swords but I find they do best with root tabs. But yes try some different beginner friendly types and see what works. An anubias attached to a piece of drift wood with a small amount of gel glue is an easy place to start. Ludwigia and Lobelia cardinalis have both grown like weeds for me planted in gravel or sand.

Thanks. I notice the plants are quite happy. I’m new to fish as a hobby. Most hobbyists recommend a stratum for plants. I don’t like the look or the extra work involved. I prefer a natural gravel like the one in my betta tank I would add a photo here but don’t know how.
